Villa Tria enjoys a delightful rural location, 2km from Rethymno. The village of Tria Monastiria is a suburb of Rethymno enjoying a peaceful setting with some ancient monuments.

Rethymno is a vibrant city with beautiful architecture, much charm, a lively port and plenty of tourist amenities. You will pass by a fabulous helping of interesting shops, wonderful restaurants and ancient buildings to arrive in the Old Town. Whilst offering many tourist amenities, Rethymno has maintained its authentic Greek feel. You can head for the Venetian Fortezza to admire this amazing sand coloured citadel perched high above the shoreline and stroll among the fragrant pine trees that lead you past ornate chapels and churches. The architecture throughout Rethymno is very elegant and the port is bustling, lined with restaurants and bars. There are many boat trips on offer.

Plakias is another wonderfully popular resort. You can pass through the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko Gorge arriving at the idyllic stunning bay of Plakias with its brilliant blue sea. Plakias is a former fishing village and now offers some wonderful tavernas, restaurants and bars.

The lively village of Platanias boasts a stunning sandy Blue Flag beach, cafes, bars and tavernas. The beach is well organised. Close to Platanias is Sfakaki, a lovely resort which is very friendly and enjoys some good shops, a bakery, tavernas, cafes, bars and restaurants. The beach is wonderful with a long sweep of sand and lots of sun loungers and parasols. The beach is home to Caretta Caretta sea turtles that you might see if you are lucky. If you stick around for sunset you will be rewarded with brilliant sunsets that cast a dazzling red and orange glow across the sea.

Away from the coast, ancient villages perch along the winding rural roads wrapped in vines and colourful flowers and Mount Ida stands majestically on the horizon. Charmed by the fragrant combination of wild herbs, oregano, oleanders, hollies and eucalyptus trees, you can visit the amazing Monastery Arsaniou. You can also visit the Monastery of Preveli or the 16th century Arkadi Monastery which stands alone on a plateau showcasing Baroque, Renaissance and Roman themes. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and the Saints Constantine and Helen. The Ideon Cave, on the east side of Mount Ida, is also fascinating as according to mythology it is where Zeus grew up.

The Palace of Knossos is where according to legend, the foundations of the Bronze Age city were filled with an inescapable labyrinth that was guarded by a vicious minotaur. The master craftsman Daedalus built the labyrinth for the mythical King Minos. His son, Theseus, slew the minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth with the help of Minos’ daughter, Ariadne, according to legend. The palace flourished during the Minoan period as the religious centre of Crete. Thanks to the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans’ excavation and careful restoration, the Palace of Knossos is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Greece.

Rethymno is a city rich in history and entertainment for all ages. There are many ancient monuments for children to spot from the Renaissance and Venetian times. With spectacular views of the city and the sea, the Fortezza is a great place for young ones. They love wandering around and travelling back in time to the era when this fortress protected the city from pirates and other invaders. The Old Town has a 4km long boulevard perfect for cycling. You can hire bikes easily. The beaches of Rethymno are fabulous so you can stop there or at one of the beach bars for refreshments.

Children love their days on the beach and you can easily visit the Rethymno beaches, Platanias Beach, Sfakaki Beach, Preveli, Damnoni, Plakias, Rodakino and Triopetra. You will be captivated by their natural beauty and crystal clear water. Preveli Beach is 40km south of Rethymno and is one of the most idyllic beaches within easy reach. The beach feels like an exotic lagoon with its oasis of palm trees and greenish waters. The Kourtaliotis River ends at this breathtaking beach surrounded by lush greenery. The beach can get crowded in high season so you could combine your trip with a visit to the Preveli Monastery and walk from there or visit via a fishing boat from Plakias or Agia Galini. Bali is another Cretan wonder, a stunning beach to the east of the villa. It is just fabulous and there is a dive school, the Hippocampos Dive Centre that will take you on introductory dives as well as scuba courses. You will see colourful underwater sealife including beautiful seahorses.

Crete is famous for its olive oil and you can visit the Paraschakis Olive Oil Factory to learn about its three generations of production. The old mill was run with a donkey. Visitors can taste and buy the oil, enjoy a guided tour and even taste some raki. There are also some wonderful wineries to visit where you can explore the vineyards, learn about the production and taste some of the delicious wines.

Reviews

  • A great stay

    on 14/10/2022

Check in was super easy and the host is very hands on and helpful. The villa was very clean on arrival and was cleaned once during our one week stay. The playground is compact, but great and there are toys for indoor play as well for younger children. The wifi was great all over the villa - inside and outside as well as on all the floors. The villa has one double bedroom on the ground floor. There are two twin rooms and another double on the first floor. There is just a toilet on the ground floor. There is a tiny shower on the lower floor. There is a separate bathroom upstairs and en suite with the double upstairs. We were two families travelling with children and this was the only issue - one set of parents were upstairs with all the children and the other parents downstairs - something to keep in mind if you travel like us. We loved our stay in the villa, it has everything you need - blankets and extra towels, all things if you want to cook and a very handy guide book with great recommendations! Our two suggestions would be : - pool cover to keep the water warm (we paid €80/day for pool heating) - it would be great if the double room on the ground floor would be an en suite (or the bathroom next to it had a shower).

  • We can’t wait to come back.

    on 07/10/2022

We recently had our 2nd stay at Villa Tria and it was just as amazing as we remembered. A beautiful villa in a great location (we had a car hire so not far to travel in to Rethymno town) with amazing views. The hosts are so welcoming and some of the best we have experienced. We travelled with our 1 year old this time and they had organised a variety of indoor toys which was an amazing touch.

  • Worked really well

    on 23/09/2022

Plenty of space for 2 families, the grounds and views were beautiful and you could tell that this had once been lived in as a family home because it was so well equipped and of such an excellent quality.

  • Very good

    on 19/08/2022

Perfect height between the coast and the hills a 360 view. From blue to green, only the butterflies, dragonflies, bees and some goats. Corners of the house and garden for everyone. Comfortable furniture and amenities. A dream for children - and 10 minutes Rethymno Old City.
