Villa Menta is nestled in a lovely position overlooking the picturesque Loutraki Bay, 12km east of the spectacular Venetian harbour of Chania Old Town on the southern side of the Akrotiri peninsula. Loutraki is a very pretty cove on the northeastern edge of Souda Bay that sits next to Marathi, a pretty fishing hamlet with taverns and bars. Chania Old Town is one of the most alluring, captivating towns of Crete. With picturesque, narrow alleys draped with colourful bouganivillea, a fabulous dining scene, atmospheric bars, the most amazing sunsets and gorgeous little boutiques lining the cobbled streets, an evening wander and dinner should not be missed. Villa Menta offers four bedrooms though one is in an open plan studio with its own kitchen and living area on the lower floor. Young adults or perhaps grandparents would love this arrangement!

The main villa enjoys three delightful bedrooms, three bathrooms and a modern open plan living space which has large patio doors that lead to the eco-pool and garden area. The views from the villa and its outside spaces are beautiful and the sea is just 170m from the villa. Villa Menta is built over three levels with the studio apartment on the lower level and the main villa on the first and second floors. In addition to the living spaces on the first floor, there is a charming bedroom and a fully-tiled bathroom with a walk-in shower. The main living room is modern and airy with a contemporary feature fireplace, a comfy corner sofa and access to a balcony where you can head out with a chilled glass of wine to admire the views. The kitchen is modern with excellent appliances for your self-catering stay.

Upstairs on the second floor, you will find two bedrooms, minimalist in design with the master enjoying access to a balcony and an ensuite shower room. All of the beds in Villa Menta are beautifully dressed with crisp cottons and lovely soft furnishings. There is a second floor family bathroom too.

The ground floor studio apartment enjoys the same high-quality finish as the main villa, offering another corner sofa in the living area with a full kitchen and dining space as well as an immaculate bathroom and a twin bedroom. It is a great space which allows a couple a little independence.

The outside space is on the first floor level. It is brilliant with a large pool, a sun deck, a lawn and sun loungers where you can relax with your holiday books while mesmerised by the views. The alfresco dining area is wonderful. It is shaded under a gazebo and there is a built-in barbecue for the barbecue masters in your group. Some entertainment is provided including table tennis and a pool table. Loutraki is a lovely spot where you will create magical holiday memories.

What you should know…

  • If you are heading into Chania for dinner, it is best to pre-book a dinner table though there are also plenty of walk-ins
  • The pool isn’t heated but for a small charge this can be arranged in cooler months
  • The lower studio has a separate entrance so although it is wonderful for grandparents or young adults, it is not suitable for children

Villa Menta is located moments from Loutraki Beach on the southern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula. It is close to Chania’s airport so you will be relaxing in the villa and jumping into the swimming pool in no time!

Loutraki Beach is separated from Marathi by a hill. From this lovely, peaceful area you can enjoy views to the islet of Marathi and spend many days on gorgeous, sheltered beaches. Loutraki is popular with families and many locals as its waters are very safe and the views towards Drapanos Cape and the White Mountains are gorgeous. Marathi Beach enjoys Blue Flag status and the village is definitely Instagram worthy with its colourful fishing boats in the harbour.

Seitan Limania Beach on the east coast of the Akrotiri peninsula is one of Crete’s most gorgeous hidden secrets. It is nestled in a canyon leading out to sea with cliffs either side and the finest white sand reaching out to turquoise waters that turn to the deepest blue as it joins the sea. It is stunning! You can take a boat trip to see this sensational beach.

Chania Old Town is within very easy reach of the villa. It is utterly gorgeous with unique shops, a brilliant dining scene, trendy bars serving cocktails and its famous harbour. The old Venetian harbour offers a phenomenal location for romantic strolls and dinner. It was originally built by the Venetians between 1320 and 1356 and is now a vibrant, cosmopolitan spot. The Egyptian lighthouse is much photographed, especially at sunset. You can take a slow meander to the lighthouse to take in the stunning views of the harbour, Old Town with the majestic White Mountains in the background. On the waterfront, the Giali Tzamisi is the oldest Muslim building in Crete. The Turkish name is translated to ‘The Seaside Mosque’. It plays host to various cultural events and exhibitions.

On the north coast of the peninsula, close to Chania, you can visit some other wonderful beaches and villages. These include Tersanas and Kalathas and the village of Chorafakia. Kalathas, another Cretan wonder sprinkled with palm trees, loungers and parasols boasts several tavernas serving delicious traditional Cretan specialities and lots of seafood. A wonderful array of watersports are available. Opposite Kalathas is a small island which you can easily reach by swimming. Stavros Beach is where ‘Zorba the Greek’ was filmed. The peninsula is home to many beautiful, ancient monasteries such as the 16th century Gouverneto Monastery and the 17th century Agia Triada Monastery.

Following the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the second most visited tourist attraction in Crete is the dramatic Samaria Gorge which is roughly 60km from the villa. It is the longest gorge in Europe and definitely worth the drive. Within the White Mountain’s National Park, it rises to an altitude of 1,230m, is 150m at its widest point and 3m at its narrowest and continues down to Agia Roumeli on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The park and gorge offer protection to over four hundred and fifty species of plant and animal, of which seventy are endemic to Crete.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. Villa Menta is ideal for a family holiday. It enjoys wonderful living space and a fantastic terrace, pool and garden. The lower independent studio cannot be used for young children so you do need to think about sleeping arrangements

The local beaches are excellent. Loutraki and Marathi Beaches are very safe for children and are sheltered from the wind. It is not so easy to walk down to the amazing Seitan Limania cove with young children but otherwise they are all very well organised for families. You can take a boat trip to Seitan Limania.

Lake Kournas is Crete’s largest freshwater lake and is fed by natural springs running off the Lefka Ori mountains. The water is 22m at its deepest and is a stunning turquoise colour. It is an excellent excursion with pedalos, lots of geese and terrapins and plenty of tavernas nearby. Close by is the Kanakis Olive Mill where you can learn all about the production of olive oil. You can taste the oil in the shop and pick up some souvenirs. You should also take a photograph with the 2000 year old olive tree outside. Another trip fairly close to Chania is the Minoan Palace of Knosses. It is known as Europe’s first city and dates from the Bronze Age.

Minoan’s World 3D Museum and 9D Cinema in Chania Town is popular. It is an immersive cinema where you can learn about the Minoan history while enjoying effects such as earthquakes and snow, bubbles and wind. There are many photo opportunities with murals in the background. The movie stars Zeus as a baby and as a God, abductions, flying too close to the sun and an eruption of the volcano in Santorini causing a devastasting tsunami that ended the Minoan era.

Limnoupolis is a fun water park close to Chania boasting eleven exciting waterslides such as 100m giant slides, free fall slides, a black hole and triple twist slides, a kid’s pool and an artificial island. It also boasts a relaxing 130m lazy river, a huge swimming pool with a diving platform, a kiddie pool and a relaxation area.

Pool heating charge? For those who require pool heating, there will be an additional charge of €55 per day (to be paid to OT prior to travel). Please request at the time of booking. Please note that like all heated pools, pool heating and water temperature are reliant on weather and outside temperatures.
Insurance Guests are required to be in possession of a valid insurance policy, which covers them for cancellations, personal belongings and any accidental damage caused during their stay.
