What you should know…

  • Be careful not to approach the sea turtles at Marathi Beach and certainly don’t feed them. We heard that a lady got bitten after trying to touch a turtle so just keep a respectful distance if you see one.
  • Marathi Beach is a lively beach. You’ll hear some music drifting from some of the tavernas. This was great when we wanted a jollier experience but we also enjoyed making use of quieter beaches when we wanted to read and relax.
  • Cash is necessary when you explore some of the more out of the way places. Definitely worth having some on you as there are some really charming little shops and taverns you’d otherwise miss.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Crete is one of the more popular Greek islands for families and it’s not hard to see why. People come back year after year for the weather, warmth and hospitality, as well as the gorgeous beaches, fascinating sense of history and culture and divine food.

Your villa is ideal for the family unit. It’s large, airy and spacious with plenty to entertain the children including a large pool, satellite television, PlayStation 4 and a basement-level gym. The outdoor areas invite play whilst in privacy. Eating together as a family and enjoying quality time also makes for memories to treasure. Communal areas include the kitchen, living and dining areas, and outdoor barbeque and dining area. If travelling in the cooler months, the charming three-sided fireplace makes for a great gathering place. A true family space, it's easy to spend time together whilst also having the nooks and crannies necessary for your own time, as well as an office space for working if necessary. The pool has a compartmentalised area for young children and babies and has a built-in seating area. With a built-in day bed outside, teenagers who want to lounge can do so in the most delightful way (and so can you).

Nearby Marathi Beach is a lovely little cove peppered with families and the elderly making it a safe place and a wonderful area for your children to make friends and for you to mingle with other families. With restaurants, shops and taverns nearby, there’s a list of music and a fun yet relaxed energy. You can spend plenty of time swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the natural beauty. If you have access to a car and want to explore other beaches, there are endless options. You can head to Souda Bay, Agia, Kasteli, Falasarna and many others each with its own quirks and charms. Water sports are hugely popular in the area and are a great way to have fun. A water park is well worth a day trip too.

There are also many restaurants to enjoy in Marathi and beyond. In Chania, a hub of the area, you can take a walk with the family and enjoy the Venetian influence that you can feel all around. This is a romantic, sultry and yet charged place where you can enjoy the architecture, take a trip to the Nautical Museum, check out the harbour and 16th-century lighthouse and take the kids to Chania’s Minoa’s World. Rethymnon is a smaller town close by that houses a Historical and Folklore museum which can also be very interesting to children and adults alike. For an excursion further afield, you can’t miss Balos and Elafonisi. With its beautiful beaches and beguiling lagoons, this is a wonderful place to swim, explore and enjoy.
