Find yourself a comfortable 5-minute drive from Cabrières-d'Avignon, an idyllic and charismatic village known to be the gate to Provence’s most captivating places.

Head to the farmers’ market of the neighbouring Coustellet to stock up on artisanal products such as cheeses, fruit, vegetables and even fig jams and lavender products. If you wish to whip up tasty meals and try to recreate some of your favourite French dishes, you can fill up the pantry by visiting the local supermarket.

Put on your walking shoes and wander through the breath-taking countryside to discover hiking and walking trails suitable for all levels. Notably, La Combe de Vaumale and La Combe de Lioux are full of striking rock formations, towering forests and medieval landmarks such as the Château de Javon castle, Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque and a Cistercian monastery with summer lavender fields.

The Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles is also only 41km away and offers even more winding paths, rich fauna and flora ideal for birdwatchers and challenging limestone cliffs. Once you climb to the top, expect panoramic views over the surrounding hills.

Avignon, 35km away, is the closest bigger city. Here you can spend all day walking around, tasting local produce at artisanal markets and admiring the rustic architecture. Set on the river Rhône, it used to be the seat of the Catholic popes from 1309 to 1377. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes in the city centre, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts. A walk along the river to admire the Pont d’Avignon bridge is highly recommended and can be finished in one of the many wineries, cafés or restaurants nearby.

Marseille, 86km away, is also a perfect option for a day out. The seaside town is known for its important history and its Old Port, where you can see fishmongers selling their daily catch along a boat-lined quay. Full of historic and modern landmarks such as La Cathédrale de La Major, it’s your getaway to the French seaside, with many popular beaches inviting you to cool down in the azure waves nearby.

On a rainy day, you can choose to visit the city’s many museums or have a stroll around its chic neighbourhood full of boutiques and souvenir shops. Fresh fish and French delicacies are also served at every corner, so make sure not to miss them if you wish to expand your palette and explore new culinary experiences.

Alternatively, you can visit the city of Nîmes, 77km away. It’s known for its well-preserved Roman monuments, such as the double-tiered amphitheatre Arena of Nîmes, which is now being used for cultural events, as well as its many ancient limestone buildings. This attractive Mediterranean town is also full of interesting landmarks, museums and a vibrant dining scene.

Although Provence is a romance lover's paradise, children can also be captivated by its beautiful countryside, fun market towns and thrilling nature. There are many hiking and walking trails to be discovered behind the property where little ones can roam free. Notably, the Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles offers pleasant walks and trails through the pine forests. Kids will also love running around the vibrant lavender fields around Sault – an appealing health resort perched at 776m above sea level. For parents, it’s an excellent place to take some treasured family photos and stock up on souvenirs for the entire family back home.

Arles, 85 km away, is a nearby city home to many famous paintings, such as one of Picasso’s in the Musée Réattu. You can also find the Fondation Van Gogh fine art museum and a cultural complex devoted to the arts, Luma Arles. The city’s Roman amphitheatre and baths are sure to capture young visitors' imagination.

Other activities for the entire family include canoeing along the river Sorgue or splashing around in the Wave Island near Carpentras. Located only 33km away, the popular water park hosts an array of rides, wave pools, and slides, as well as a surf wave stimulator and Europe’s largest lazy river.

When you find yourself in Avignon, take your little explorers to the city’s notable buildings and admire the Pope’s Palace and The Saint Bénézet Bridge. There are plenty of family-friendly restaurants where you can refuel after a long day spent walking, but if you are too tired, a ride on the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus or Little Tourist Train is an easy way to explore the city with children.
