A wine-lovers idyll, Le Sommelier is a grand maison offering character and a touch of romance set in beautiful vineyards in the heart of the sublime landscapes of Les Alpilles, only 2km from the picturesque town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

With charm and authenticity, this farmhouse has been renovated to make a lovely home which is welcoming and warm. The relaxed interiors offer comfort and character with traditional furnishings alongside modern features. Over three floors, there are five pretty bedrooms, each one featuring their own bathrooms including a romantic tub and some impressive Italian showers.  

Outside it’s so typically Provençal with a delightful shaded pergola perfect for lingering lunches with friends or long evenings under the starry sky with fine local wine and good company. The grounds are vast, featuring flowering terracotta pots, an abundance of shady trees and of course acres of vineyards producing many grape varieties. Wander to the lovely gated swimming pool, catch some sun on a lounger or cool off in the inviting water in this idyllic French setting.

You can drive, cycle or even walk to nearby St-Rémy where you can explore the winding lanes, admiring artists at work before dining in one of the many excellent restaurants. Other idyllic villages to discover in Les Alpilles region include Maussane, famous for one of the best olive oils in France and Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the country’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Arles and Avignon are also wonderful cities to discover full of art, history and fine cuisine whilst activity lovers can play golf nearby, ride horses through the varied landscapes or try rock-climbing. There are many cycling trails and of course this area has so many fantastic walks passing summer sunflowers, fields of lavenders, olive groves and vineyards. This is Provence in all its glory in one of the most captivating parts of southern France.

Le Sommelier is set on working vineyards belonging to a family who produce excellent Vin de France wines with a tendency towards organic production. There are beautiful vineyard views from many of the bedroom windows and from the relaxing al-fresco terrace.

The location is in the heart of Les Alpilles Natural Park, around 2km from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (a short drive or cycle ride away or keen walkers could stroll into the charming town). St-Rémy is well-known for its connections to Vincent Van Gogh, who created many paintings during his time here and you can visit the famous asylum at St Paul de Mausole during your time here.

Nowadays, many artists live and work in the town and you can discover their art in pretty galleries and boutiques dotted around the winding lanes. In the summer months, on selected Sundays, the ‘Route des Artistes’ fills with local artists showing off their work creating a wonderful and bustling atmosphere.

St-Rémy is also well-known for its excellent restaurants from down to earth bistros to Michelin starred establishments and there is also a lovely weekly food market on a Wednesday morning.

Indeed, this region is a delight for lovers of fine cuisine whether it is tasting some of France’s finest olive-oil in the pretty village of Maussane with its two ancient olive mills or discovering some of the area’s best restaurants from excellent pizzerias to high-end dining. There are of course many opportunities to visit wineries that are scattered across Les Alpilles, including just by your own maison

This region is loved by hikers with many walking-trails for various abilities, passing the diverse and stunning landscapes of this part of Provence. Golf-lovers will find a range of courses across the region whilst there are horse-riding and ample cycling opportunities nearby.

Other idyllic villages and towns to discover include Les Baux-de-Provence (12km), one of France’s acclaimed ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and Van Gogh’s precious Arles (30km), both within easy reach. Gordes (37km) is yet another one of the many beautiful villages worth visiting with stunning architecture, set in the outstanding Luberon region with equally beautiful landscapes.

Just to the north of Les Alpilles, the small yet lively city of Avignon (22km) is an excellent day out with its winding medieval streets, excellent dining opportunities and two UNESCO world heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. The covered market offers all sorts of delights or head to the weekend farmers, flower and flea markets for wonderful local produce and a bargain or two.

The charming town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is only 2km away. Here you can explore the winding streets filled with art galleries and pretty boutiques and follow the Van Gogh trail around the town, looking out for the sign-boards featuring paintings he created in the village. History lovers should also head out to the archaeological site of Glanum, just south of St-Rémy.

Avignon is another lovely day trip for families. Explore the city by the little road train or take a boat trip along the Rhone.

There is some great kayaking near L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or you can also hire canoes and kayaks by the magnificent Pont du Gard near Nimes. Closer to home, try rock-climbing in Les Alpilles or find a pony-club for youngsters. There are wonderful walks, cycling routes and horse-riding opportunities across the region.

Finally, animal lovers should head to Zoo La Barben with over 600 species of animals whilst the most adventurous may prefer the various tree-top activity centres scattered across Provence.

Security deposit €3000 paid to the owner by bank transfer one month before arrival and refunded two weeks after departure, subject to full inspection.

End of stay cleaning included? Extra €150, paid locally. However, guests are required to leave the accommodation clean, tidy and in the same condition as on their arrival. Any extra cleaning, laundry, maintenance and/or garbage disposal required will be charged against the security deposit.
