Le Gingembre is a historic stone home situated in the heart of an idyllic village encircled by the green hills of Provence. With the village amenities, vineyards and mountain walking trails close to the villa, you have everything you need on hand for a relaxing break.

The house is quintessentially Provençal; it is a traditional stone building with blue window shutters outside, while indoors you can still find the original beams, floor tiles and impressive stone fire place. The antique furniture and cosy décor reflect the rich history of the home, which was once used as a meeting house during the French Revolution where the Republicans rallied together against the royalists.

The villa is spread over three floors; on the ground floor there is an open-plan living and dining room with comfy sofas, a feature fireplace and a large dining table for chatting the night away over dinner. The room is flooded with natural light from the large windows and from the doors that lead out on to the internal courtyard. Downstairs there is also a fully-fitted kitchen and an alcove with a table which is great for board games.

The first floor of the house boasts a fantastic master suite which has a dressing room, a seating area and a spacious en-suite bathroom with an inviting bath tub. There are also two further double bedrooms on this floor with pretty décor. The two remaining bedrooms are situated on the second floor; one is a double room and the other can be set up with a double bed or two twin beds, offering flexibility to your party. If you need to work while away then there is also an office space on the second floor.

Despite being set in the middle of the village, the home has two amazing outdoor areas. You can either lounge in the internal courtyard or you could take in the staggering views and cook at the summer kitchen on the roof terrace. There is even a garage available for parking.

When you want to dine out in the evening or pick up some groceries, you will find a range of amenities in the village including a fine dining restaurant. It is a delightful place to stay and is noted as one of France’s most beautiful villages; where you can enjoy strolling through picturesque streets and squares and shopping at the bustling market held every Sunday. There are also a number of attractions here such as the medieval castle, 12th century church and a few museums. On the outskirts of the village there are countless woodland walking trails, cycling routes and serene picnic locations as well as a selection of family run vineyards and lavender farms which offer tours to visitors.

The surrounding area is home to a wide range of enchanting, hilltop villages that you should also add to your itinerary. Among them is Lourmarin, and its incredible castle Château de Lourmarin, which is 10km away, Bonnieux, which is 22km away and was an inspiration to Impressionist painters, and Ménerbes, which is 32km away and was the setting for the famous book “A Year in Provence” by Peter Mayle.

If you would like to spend a day in the city then you can visit Aix-en-Provence with ease as it is just 30km away by car. This is a gorgeous city which is a hub for art and culture lovers who will love perusing the endless stream of museums and galleries. Those who prefer shopping and lazy brunches are also well-provided for in the city as you can wander around the streets lined with boutique stores and sit out in one of the fountain-filled squares to dine-alfresco.

This family home is set within a row of charming historic houses looking out over the streets of one of the most beautiful villages in the Vaucluse area. With shops and eateries on your doorstep plus open countryside close by, this is a wonderful place to stay on your trip to Provence.

Le Gingembre is located within a lovely hilltop village which is dotted with honey-hued medieval stone buildings and encircled by verdant fields and vineyards. In the centre you will find a boutique shops, a bakery, bar and a Michelin-starred restaurant which offers fresh, seasonal menus for lunch and dinner.

The village is topped by a 12th-century castle and the neighbouring St Martin Church. The castle is privately owned but is open for tours where you can learn more about the history of the castle from the middle-ages onwards. The unique castle is one of two halves; the old medieval side with ramparts and turrets which was used for defence and the Renaissance side which was added later which is filled with tapestries and luxurious Versaille-esque décor. Outdoors, the grounds of the Château are vast and filled with roses and pristine hedges.

Another great attraction can be found on the outskirts of the village which is a museum of wine. At the museum you can learn about the history of wine making “from vine to wine”, learn about bottle making and the wine press and walk around the five-room exhibition. You will be glad to hear that the museum is located within Château Turcan - a vineyard where you can sample wines and see the cellars.

This area is also surrounded by rolling fields and expansive parkland where you can enjoy time in nature. Leading out from the alleys of the village you can find yourself on picturesque walking trails. Whether you wish to hike over the nearby hills or just fancy a circular stroll, there is something for everyone. There are lots of stunning natural spots near to the villa which you could visit to spend a lazy day; one of these is the l’Etang de la Bonde, which is a tranquil lake which is just 5km away. The lake is a fabulous place for a day trip and sits in dense pine woodlands with beaches, picnic areas and a snack bar. There is also a lifeguard on duty in summer months when the locals love to come for a cooling swim.

Provence is home to countless hilltop villages with historic buildings, shops, restaurants and bustling markets, each with their own histories to tell. Some of the fantastic villages nearby include: Bonnieux which is 22km away, Lourmarin which is 10km away and Ménerbes which is 30km away.

Le Gingembre is a located within a lovely village in Provence, off the beaten track and an ideal base for those on holiday with children. While staying here, families can explore nearby hilltop villages and also enjoy leisurely walks and picnics in the surrounding Luberon countryside.

There are also lots of unique museums and galleries scattered around Provence’s villages and a great one to take the children to is called the Extraordinary Museum which is within walking distance of the villa. As its name suggests, this village is rather extraordinary and was curated by artist Georges Mazoyer but is now run by his daughter. Mazoyer was both a scuba diver and a painter and the museum combines these interests; you can see an interesting range of curiosities such as pre-historic fossils and the remains of a giant shark here. There are also lots of items which Mazoyer has brought up from his dives and an array of his art works. You leave the museum through a magical stained-glass tunnel which represents the ocean and head outdoors to a garden filled with more art work and sculptures.

Reviews

  • Charming, spacious, and perfectly located

    on 31/08/2016

We were two couples who stayed here during the month of August. It was everything we expected: charming, spacious, and perfectly located. The house offered pretty much all the amenities we have at home, but so much more! You knew you were in the south of France. The decor, the homes location, the town's people and the weather--warm, inviting, gracious, and not a cloud in the sky. It was the perfect house, and town, for a stay in the Luberon. And, my husband, who is an artist, could not have asked for a more beautiful country side, town, or Le Gingembre to paint. It was all perfection. A short drive from the villa gets you to any of the nearby villages for dinner, shopping, or sightseeing. And, getting to places like Aix-en-Provence, Arles, or Marseille was not difficult nor very far. For artists, writers, and anyone looking for a true getaway-- I don't think you'll regret it.

  • We will be back!

    on 05/10/2014

If there is a lovelier vacation home to stay in, I haven't been there. Everything has been thought of: comfortable furnishings, comfortable beds, great linens, beautifully decorated throughout with a French country shabby chic vibe, gourmet kitchen, inviting rooftop wine patio to take in the gorgeous views, massive fireplace to make it ever so cozy in the winter, and situated in a charming little village with a Michelin starred restaurant (La Closerie) steps from the door. We will be back!

  • Shoulder season experience

    on 01/05/2014

This villa features completely renovated interiors to suit American sensibilities without sacrificing provencal charm. Beddings are superior and spa-like. Gourmet kitchen stocked to detail. Its location inside village is most convenient. Just steps away from a Michelin rated restaurant and wineries, one could actually do without auto rental for a complete experience. This was my third trip to this property and I am already planning my return!
