Exceptional Wednesday Booking!

Oliver's Travels guests will be able to make an exceptional booking from Wednesday to Wednesday between 3rd July and 10th July 2024.

Not far from one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Chateau des Audaces is a historic and beautiful home which enjoys wonderful views over the stunning Tarn-et-Garonne countryside.

You can also enjoy the romantic vistas of forests and farmland from many of the large windows across the 13th to 18th century house, which is unique for a château from this time. The owners have lovingly restored this home to create a stylish and comfortable space yet have respected its historic past by retaining traditional features such as thick stone walls, wood beams and vaulted ceilings. The home has been furnished with great care, a graceful blend of old and new and artwork adorns the walls; you can tell it’s an artist’s home. There is a relaxed ambience throughout, after all this is the Tarn-et-Garonne with its gentle landscapes and unhurried way of life.

With six bedrooms across both the château and a separate apartment
across the courtyard, there is a great sense of space for families and friends. The main living room has a plush sofa facing the wood-burning fire and an informal dining area by the tall windows which flood light into the room. A second salon has open doors leading down to a glorious terrace with a gas and wood-fired barbecue and pretty views. Even the well-equipped kitchen is a pleasant place to relax under the curved ceiling or by the enchanting Juliet balcony.

Three hectares of grounds, all for your exclusive use, feature century old trees, a small vineyard and many pretty spots where you can sit quietly in the shade enjoying the tranquillity around you. The 5m x 12m heated swimming pool has its own south-west facing terrace, bathroom and covered seating area plus there’s a courtyard garden and great areas for al-fresco dining. The expansive views are just lovely and add to the charm and appeal of this picturesque home.

It’s just 2km to the local village with its boulangerie or drive a little further to Lauzerte, one of the country’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its restaurants, shops and cafes. There are some wonderful walks across this area, including the Camino pilgrim’s trail which passes near the château. There’s also swimming in lakes, kayaking, playing golf and horse-riding in the area and the quiet roads are perfect for cycling.

Try some of the great local produce either at local farms or one of the Farmer’s markets dotted around the region’s villages and towns. Montcuq, Moissac and Puy-l'Évêque are particularly great market towns filled with history and charm. The fascinating town of Cahors and its surrounding vineyards producing some of the world’s finest wines are also a must.

After a day out exploring the lovely Tarn-et-Garonne, take your delicious wares home to enjoy on the peaceful terraces and beautiful home of Chateau des Audaces.

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Set in the beautiful countryside of Tarn-et-Garonne, with lovely views of woodland and farmland, Chateau des Audaces enjoys an enviable location just over 2km from a local village.

You can pick up morning pastries and fresh bread from the boulangerie in the local village and there’s also a small grocery store there, whilst a larger supermarket is around 7km away.

The small bastide town of Lauzerte (7km) is classed as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its pretty arcaded square, medieval buildings which have recently been restored and charming cafes, shops and restaurants. Stop off in Le Jardin du Pelerin which is on the famous Camino pilgrim's route that passes through the town (the GR65, which also passes within 3km of the house).

The Tarn-et-Garonne is often referred to as the ‘Tuscany of France’ due to its beautiful valleys and rolling hills. You will find food markets in many villages and towns across the region, certainly one for most days of the week. Local specialities include grapes, duck, Cahors wine, fruit and you’ll be able to visit vineyards, organic farmers and fromagiers both nearby and further afield. Look out for the weekly summer brocantes (flea markets) as well.

There are some wonderful cycling routes through the countryside landscapes as well as walking trails (including the famous GR65 pilgrim route) and horse-riding. There’s a small but very pretty golf course 11km away and tennis courts even closer.

Just a twenty-minute drive away is Lac De Montcuq with its lake beach, restaurant, play area, fishing opportunities and supervised swimming on some summer afternoons. There’s also a popular water park at the top of the lake. If you prefer boating, head to the Canal des Deux Mers, just over half an hour away, also known for its picturesque cycling tow paths or hire kayaks on the river in Moissac.

Montcuq (18km) is a delightful town with a great Sunday morning market and a fascinating Cathar history. Puy-l'Évêque (43km) is also incredibly beautiful, a perched village on the River Lot and you can take boat trips in the summer months. Moissac (24km), on the banks of the Tarn River, is worthy of a visit for the Abbaye Saint-Pierre, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Montauban (34km) is another great town with its impressive square, restaurants, museums and lovely walks along the Canal De Montech.

Try to visit the historic town of Cahors (45km) on market day, twice a week, where you can pick up all sorts of amazing local delights such as Quercy melons, truffles and the finest foie gras. The famous bridge, Pont Valentré, is a UNESCO World Heritage site; it’s an incredibly picturesque town to explore. The surrounding Cahors vineyards are world-famous and produce some of the best Malbec and Syrah varieties – be sure to visit a vineyard or two during your stay.

Region

A relatively new addition to France, the Midi-Pyrénées was created to surround the cultural capital of Toulouse in the late 1970s. You might think that its relative youth would mean the Midi-Pyrénées is short on character or identity, but remember, this is France we’re talking about – the whole country is steeped in history and tradition. Encompassing parts of Gascony, Languedoc, the Gers and several others, you’ll get a varied slice of the whole French experience here, not least if you stay at one of our beautiful chateaux in the Midi-Pyrénées! And if you want to discover the best of what the region has to offer, our Midi-Pyrénées travel guide is here to show you where to go, what to eat and how you can make the best of your break with some amazing activities.

There are lots of lovely activities to do across this region. There are tennis courts within 3km and lots of cycling routes through both the countryside and along the towpath of the Canal des Deux Mers. Horse-riding is popular in the countryside as well.

Hire kayaks in Mossaic or go boating along the Canal des Deux Mers around thirty minutes away. Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, around an hour away, also has amazing canoeing opportunities along the Gorges de l'Aveyron.

Lac de Montcuq is a lovely place to go for a picnic with its sandy beach and play area. There is also supervised swimming in the afternoon in the summer months. At the top of the lake, Aquazone offers family fun in an inflatable water park from late June to the end of August.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We bought Chateau des Audaces in 2009 and started renovations the following year.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
We came across the property on a hot August day. It was hidden away, behind trees on the top of a hill. We approached the chateau under an alley of lime trees that led directly to a beautiful enclosed courtyard with hundred year old cypresses surrounded by dressed stone buildings.

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really must do?
Nothing, relax! However if you wish…

Mondenard is a 5-minute drive to the beautiful medieval hill town of Lauzerte, (market Saturday) and close to the vibrant village of Moncuq (market Sunday). It is 25 mins from Moissac (market Saturday and Sunday) with its the heritage-listed cloisters and 13th century church. Going on market days is great fun.

During spring, summer and autumn there is live music to be found all around with festivals in Montauban, Moissac and Cahors, amongst others. The quiet roads are ideal for bike-riding. Cycling and boating along the nearby Canal du Midi, as is canoeing in the beautiful Gorge d’Aveyron, swimming in nearby lakes, and visits to pre-historic caves, medieval chateaux and bastide towns. Museums include the Musée Ingres in Montauban, and the Toulouse–Lautrec Museum in Albi.

There are some lovely walks. The camino pilgrims’ trail to Santiago de Compostela also passes close to the chateau.

Must eat?
The area has great produce in general with small producers growing delicious fruit and vegetables. Most stone fruit is grown locally and is delicious, as are the melons.

Being the south west there is always duck in all its forms. There are many ways to eat this, and great producers we can tell you about.

There is a very small market on Thursdays with an excellent organic fruit and veg stall, a local goat cheese producer, local poultry and eggs, and finally one of the best cheese vans I’ve come across in the 20-odd years I’ve lived in France.

Must see?
Aside from the villages I have mentioned, you must see the World Heritage listed cloisters and 12thC church in Moissac. Neighbouring Lauzerte was voted one of the top “Village Preferés des Francais”, with it’s 13th century buildings, paved streets, arcaded market square and wonderful views. Cahors on the river Lot, and Toulouse have magnificent architecture worth the trip.

Though really, the beautiful countryside that you will pass through on your way to markets etc is a ‘must see’.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
This is a very quiet relaxing area, with relaxed and charming people. It has all the sun and beauty you could want without the large influx of summer visitors that descend on some parts of France during summer.

  • It exceeded our expectations a thousand times over

    on 24/08/2023

What an amazing 3 weeks here in you’re amazing chateau. We feel very pleased with ourselves for finding this place via the internet although to be honest it exceeded our expectations a thousand times over. It is perfect and thank the hosts for their exquisite décor which makes the chateau functioning but beautiful for big parties. A beautiful home, and thankyou again for sharing it. We had many guests who all fell in love with the place. Age range 25 to 65, the fête gourmand was a hit, a great night out had by all! The surrounding towns are beautiful and the roads wonderful to cycle on, very different from the pot holes in Surry, UK [ an avid road cyclist here!]
Thank you to the staff for all the help and the lovely cleaners nothing was too much trouble.
We hope to see you again.

  • The most wonderful stay

Thank the owners so much for letting us into their home and for all the advice and quick responses. We have been utterly swept off our feet. We hope they have a great year and continue to allow people to enjoy this corner of your world.

  • Perfect holiday home

    on 22/07/2022

We had a wonderful holiday in this perfect house. So much space! Wonderful views. The pool area is just ideal. Michael was very helpful and took good care of us. Owners Adrienne and Tim responded quickly to any queries. Just the best place to stay, relax and enjoy all the area has to offer.

  • We hope to return!

    on 08/07/2019

Our second summer staying in Chateau de Mont Lanard has again been truly wonderful! The Chateau itself is beautiful and allowed us the feeling of space, comfort and luxury to relax with our extended family - the ample space of the grounds and the wonderful pool were enjoyed by all. We loved the beautiful town, its range of cafés, shops and médiéval architecture are definitely worth visiting. We also enjoyed the incredible Abbey in Moissac with the famous cloisters that did not disappoint - just stunning! Further afield we visited St-Antonin Noble-Val another stunning town which also gave us the opportunity to canoe for half a day in the Gorges de l'Aveyron - highly recommended! Cahors was also beautiful with the cathedral, church, river and market to be enjoyed. A morning walk to the bakery in Cazes-Mondenard provided beautiful croissants to be enjoyed on the terrace with its stunning views each day. Thank you to Michael, the most charming caretaker we have met and thank you to the owners for this fabulous Château.
