Outside, the terrace is the place for al-fresco meals or cooking by the plancha-style barbecue, no doubt making the most of delicious Provençal produce you have picked up from local markets. Dip into the heated swimming pool or simply relax poolside on the loungers, perhaps accompanied by the very best Côte de Provence wines from nearby vineyards.

There is so much to experience in this part of southern France – start by exploring the local village, around 1km away, stopping off for a coffee or bite to eat before strolling by the little river or climbing up to the village’s castle ruins where you can admire panoramic views towards the Maures hills.

Visit atmospheric Farmer’s markets in picture-perfect villages such as Gonfaron or Lorgues, take long walks through the surrounding landscapes or discover the peaceful Argens river by canoe or kayak.

Further afield, be amazed by the incredible natural beauty of Lac de Sainte-Croix and the world-famous Verdon Gorge. You may prefer to head south to the French Riviera whether you opt for wind-surfing on the Giens Peninsula near Hyères, lazing on the sandy beaches of Le Lavandou or soaking up the glitz of gorgeous Saint-Tropez, stopping off in flower-filled villages such as La Garde-Freinet and Grimaud en route.

Villa Des Ponteves enjoys a picturesque setting in the Var department, around a 45-minute drive north of Hyères and a great location for visiting charming villages and market towns, admiring beautiful landscapes and even spending the day on the French Riviera.

Set amongst the trees with neighbouring villas dotted around, the local village is around 1km away (via a country road), a pretty place with a small handful of restaurants and on the banks of a little river. Pass characterful shuttered houses and plane trees as you wander through the old village, stop off for a coffee then hike up the hill to see the 13th century castle ruins where you can gaze at panoramic views towards the Maures hills.

This is a glorious region for long walks through oak forests, vineyards and farmland or beyond to the Maures plains and there are ample cycling opportunities as well. Golf de Barbaroux awaits 12km away whilst youngsters will love Aoubré Adventure Park, only ten minutes by car, with its forest, animal park, butterfly garden and tree-top trails.

Meanwhile, wine-lovers can sample the very best Côte de Provence wines, such as at nearby Commanderie de Peyrassol where art, wine and history combine in the most wonderful setting of endless vineyards. Vidauban (21km) is also known as a wine-making region, set near the banks of the Argens river where you can hire canoes and kayaks in the height of the summer. Le Thoronet (20km) is another superb spot to enjoy river-based activities, also close to the impressive Abbaye du Thoronet.

This part of the Var department is home to so many traditional market villages and towns. Visit the delightful Provençal village of Lorgues (28km) on a Tuesday morning to experience the region’s largest market, perhaps followed by lunch in Michelin starred Chez Bruno or a visit to the winery at Château de Berne. Look out for the weekly market in Gonfaron (9km), set out on Place de la Victoire beneath the plane trees whilst Pignans (10km) hosts yet another atmospheric market, reached via an especially attractive route. In the summer months you will no doubt come across night markets, brocantes and an array of summer festivities across the area and beyond.

Further afield, Aups (45km) is the gateway to the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon whilst Lac de Sainte-Croix, around a 90-minute drive away, is a stunning place offering incredible lake beaches and so many outdoor adventures, close to the world-famous Verdon Gorge.

Heading south, drive to the beaches around Hyères, including the Giens Peninsula under an hour away (you could also hop on a ferry to the idyllic Île de Porquerolles from here), or spend time at one of the Côte d'Azur seaside resorts such as La Londe-les-Maures (43km) or Le Lavandou (62km). You can even experience the beauty and glitz of Saint-Tropez (50km), driving through the Maures hills passing picture-perfect villages such as La Garde-Freinet and Grimaud en route.
