In a hillside position with gentle views down to the River Dronne, Maison Bolivar is ideally located close to the historic and beautiful town of Brantôme in the Perigord Vert region of northern Dordogne.

Set just outside the town in a countryside setting amongst a handful of houses, follow a pretty forest path for a relaxed 20 to 30 minutes and you will find yourselves in the heart of Brantôme (or it’s just a five-minute drive away). Sitting on the River Dronne, this is an incredibly picturesque town with wonderful restaurants, charming shops and a lovely Friday morning market. The architecture is exquisite, dating back to the Renaissance and medieval periods and the town’s abbey is especially note-worthy. A visit to the troglodytes caves is also a must.

The town is often referred to as ‘Venice of the Dordogne’ due to its idyllic waterways. Hiring a canoe is a wonderful way to admire the scenery or you could take a boat trip along the river. There are also many peaceful riverside walks - wander as far as Les Jardins Tranquilles, a landscaped garden that can be visited from May to the end of September (views of which you can see from your holiday home – just walk home via the river afterwards).

Bourdeilles (7km) is another incredible village to visit, dating back to the 10th century and home to the well-known Château de Bourdeilles. Sunday morning is a particularly delightful time to visit with its vibrant market selling delicious local produce.

Food-lovers will also appreciate Riberac (35km) with one of the area’s best markets on a Friday morning (look out for seasonal black truffles, foie gras and walnuts), perhaps then travelling onwards to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (50km) with its fascinating historical sites and listed as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. A little closer to home, the pretty riverside village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle (22km) is also one of France’s classified prettiest villages and a pleasant place to spend some time.

Périgueux (25km), the capital of the Dordogne department, is another remarkable place to visit with attractive medieval lanes, bustling Saturday morning market, 11th century cathedral and Roman remains.

Other note-worthy historic sites in the region include the famous Château de Puyguilhem (17km) and Château de Jumilhac (50km) with its stunning gardens.

There’s no shortage of leisure activities with endless walking and cycling trails through the Perigord-Vert where you can discover rolling hills, vast forests, streams and rocky plateaus. Golf can be found near Périgueux and there is a horse-riding school within half an hour.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
Since November 2015

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
I loved its position overlooking the river Dronne and surrounding woods and with its close proximity to Brantome thought it was ideal. It’s a lovely walk into town in the summer and there are other walking trails leading from the house.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

The house itself was part of a farm complex originally and the main salon I’ve been told was used to dry tobacco.

For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…

Must do?/Must eat?/Must see?

When guests are here they must make time to visit the Benedictine Abbey in town it has the oldest bell tower of its kind in France and there are regular guided tours of the abbey and the caves that have prehistoric cave paintings and also the ‘Fountain of the Rock’ hidden behind the abbey.

Guests can also hire canoes by the hour or half day to explore the river Dronne and gently paddle down to the picturesque village of Bourdeilles where there is a chateau and on Friday nights there is live music at the local bar, need to get there early as it is very popular.

Also on a Friday night, 9 o’clock in Brantome there is River jousting - It’s good fun to watch.

Staying with the river theme you can buy a ticket on the day for river cruises which take you down the Dronne and lady for approx 50 minutes.

Of course a definite must is the authentic Friday market in Brantome where you will find locals and tourists shopping for local produce such as honey, fruit and veg, flowers, truffles, garlic, fish and oysters.  It’s a great place to meet up and enjoy the atmosphere and have coffee or lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants. Get there early in order to park or have a gentle stroll from Lezardiere. Insider tip many of the restaurants get busy over the summer so booking is advisable.

  • Great place to spend some quality time

Posted by Jonathan den Otter on 24/08/2019

I have stayed at Maison Bolivar several times both during summer and winter.
It is a great place to retreat from the stress and noises from the city. The house is just a 20min walk away from Brantome. The house itself is located on a the top of a small hill in La Cote surrounded by just a handful other small houses and has a complete uninterrupted view over the river Dronne and the Les Jardins Tranquilles.
The house is spacious and cosy at the same time, offering variety of spaces to spend time alone or together. One can read a book alone on the chaise longue in front of the window upstairs in the living room, or the gallery space on the 2nd floor or spend time with family and friends in the big open kitchen, dining area or in the huge living room.
The house also has three double bedrooms and three bathrooms, so no one is in each other’s way.
The outdoor space is split in three levels, which are all connected with each other and therefore also give the options to spend time together or to retreat.
There is a big pool and plenty of outdoor seating spaces. There is an wooden canopy, where we had most of our lunches and dinners in the summer with a outdoor brick barbecue place just next to it, which we often used.
There is a sundeck with several sunchairs to relax after a swim, or there is a cozy corner bench with comfortable cushions under the shadow of some trees, if it’s getting to hot in the sun.
There is also a huge garden space on the lower level of the outdoor space, which is perfect to play some badminton, do some exercises or to build tents for children (or adults).
It has enough parking space for 3 cars, so everyone can arrive with their own vehicles.
In the summer the house is nice and cool inside and the outdoor space is great to have breakfast, lunch, dinner and some pool- and sunbath-action.
In the winter the house turns into a cosy retreat from the cold and we mainly spent our time together cooking in the kitchen or in front of the fireplace in the living room, reading, playing games or watching movies.
The house is surrounded by great forest paths, perfect for nice walks or runs, both in the summer and in winter.
It is a great place to spend some quality time with family and friends and to recharge.
I am very looking forward to my next visit.

  • This is France at its best

Posted by Kim Ropek on 13/07/2019

I have stayed at this beautiful spacious house on two occasions and can't wait to return.
This is France at its best, a calm oasis with a pool and the house is tastefully decorated throughout.
The town of Brantome within walking distance is picture postcard perfect with outstanding renaissance and medieval buildings.
The market is brilliant for local produce that can be prepared back at the house and eaten by the pool under the verandah or wherever you like.
If cooking is not for you there are numerous well regarded places to eat nearby.
There are lots of places to visit locally chateaus, villages and you can also canoe on the Dronne!
Oh before I forget, there are lots of walks directly from the house including a beautiful stroll to Les Jardin Tranquille by the river.
The location is quiet so you really feel you are escaping for a truly relaxing break,it's heaven reading a good book by the pool and if you are lucky someone might bring you a glass of delicious local wine as well!
    Enjoy.
