Overview

Exclusive Recommended Pool Ideal for Kids

The Chateau Lamantin, a family-friendly chateau in Aquitaine, has the elegance of a French country house and an abundance of outdoor pursuits. Swim in an expansive pool surrounded by stone walls, fish in a large private lake and play croquet and badminton on a vast lawn. On rainy days, there’s plenty of indoor entertainment, including a piano, table tennis, billiards, exercise equipment, board games, Satellite TV and DVDs.

When you’re ready to explore, the chateau is only 3 km from Mezin, a village famous for its medieval church, cork museum, and Sunday market. Nearby, the town of Nerac has a 16th century castle, the Chateau Musee Henri IV, and you can have foie gras at its supposed birthplace. Beach-goers will love the sand on their toes at the lakeside beach in Lislebonne (4 km).

Back at home, you’ll appreciate the luxury of each unique room, with the finest touches like heated towel racks, Louis XVI-style sitting chairs, and antique wardrobes. With 5 bedrooms, Chateau Lamantin sleeps 10 comfortably.

In the Lot-et-Garonne department, this ideal French holiday rental is close to the Dordogne, Lot, and Gironde areas, and only 112 km from the Bergerac international airport.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the chateau?
My family bought the chateau in 1800. My Grand-Father was the deputy mayor of the Lot-and-Garonne region and he was tutored by the President of the French Republic Arnaud Fallieres who often came to visit.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

The chateau was built in 1792 by an American Count and Countess before they moved back to Louisiana. Manatees (or Sea Cows), large water mammals were living here. In French they are called Lamantins which is where the chateau's name comes from.

What aspects of the house are you most in love with?
The natural environment with the woodlands, lake, fields and 400 year old oak tree lend a sensation of well-being, serenity and freedom away from the daily routine of working life.

For anyone come to stay is there anything that they should...
Really do?

Enjoy the private fishing lake! You can fish during the day and enjoy your catch grill on the BBQ for an evening meal together.

Really see?
Within a 10km radius there are chateaux to visit, museums, galleries, wine cellars, night markets, the list is endless!
