Overview
Staying at Château Serein is a true privilege; a charming English home in a classic French château surrounded by glorious Burgundy countryside. In the breathtaking Serein Valley, close to the Morvan hills, it’s less than an hour north of Beaune, the wine capital of the region.
This Grade I listed 18th century home has been in the family for many years and makes an outstanding venue for wonderful holidays where you can enjoy the finest food and wine of the region. It has even been highly recommended by two best-selling wine experts as an ideal base for wine-tasting tours of the Burgundy vineyards. Personal wine-tasting can also be arranged in the château itself, a truly memorable experience!
Situated on its own private island surrounded by broad moats, the château is approached through an avenue of lime trees. Enjoy time in the vast private grounds with its woods and landscaped gardens or spend warm summer days cooling off in the bassin, an 18th century bathing pool. Explore the moats with the rowing boat then challenge a friend to a game of croquet. Drink fine Burgundy wines on the splendid terrace and enjoy al-fresco meals en famille using fruit and vegetables which are regularly delivered from the delightful kitchen garden and fruit orchard.
The sense of space is wonderful; whether staying with family or friends you can always find somewhere quiet to relax throughout the château and grounds. Inside you will find eight spacious bedrooms and five bathrooms, several of which are en suite. The magnificent entrance hall with its grand piano and sweeping staircase is also sure to impress whilst the fine panelled salon has French doors leading to the west-facing terrace where you can gaze at the beautiful valley views.
Every morning a continental breakfast is served with cheese, hams, pastries and more and there’s also the opportunity to request meals to be cooked for you by the hospitable château hosts once a day or a chef service. Both half and full board are possible or simply enjoy a chef preparing you a one-off special feast to enjoy outside on the terrace or by the roaring fire in the dining room. Do arrange any meals you require in advance; the excellent chefs tend to book up quickly.
Discover many of Burgundy’s gastronomic restaurants nearby, including some with Michelin stars and visit the famous vineyards of Burgundy with the wineries of Chablis and the Côte de Beaune in under an hour. Drive to charming market towns such as Saulieu, just 15km away or explore the magnificent Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan with its forests, mountains and lakes, ideal for all sorts of outdoor pursuits.
Local medieval towns include Semur-en-Auxois and Flavigny (where Chocolat was filmed) or venture further afield to Vézelay and the Abbaye de Fontenay, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the heart of glorious Burgundy, there is so much to discover during your time at Château Serein.

What you should know…
- There is a moat so children need supervision, but it's fun for rowing
- Rather than a traditional pool, there's an 18th Century bassin at the heart of the charming kitchen garden, with fresh stream water, perfect for cooling off on hot summer days
- The pricing is for 14 guests only. If you have other guests wanting to come then please request additional prices as the château can hold up to 16 people on request
- If you're keen to book one of the catered chef services, please do so as soon as possible as the chefs are excellent and tend to get booked up very quickly, especially the Michelin-trained ones

Location
About the surrounding area of Chateau SereinSituated in the Côte d’Or, in the Serein valley, Château Serein enjoys a wonderful setting in the heart of Burgundy and is an ideal location for exploring the gastronomic delights and vineyards of this amazing region.
The château is near three main wine regions - the Loire, Chablis and the Côtes de Nuits of Beaune. As well as some of the famous and highly-regarded wineries of Burgundy, there are also hundreds of smaller vineyards who will welcome you, show you how their wine is produced and allow you to taste their final product.
As well as wine-tasting, there is a wealth of beautiful villages and towns nearby such as Saulieu (15km) with its delightful market on a Saturday morning and the Michelin 2* Relais Bernard Loiseau. There is also a wonderfully refurbished cinema, which sometimes shows films in the original language and a spa for relaxing treatments.
Other great places to visit include Semur-en-Auxois, Flavigny (where the film Chocolat was shot), Chateauneuf-en-Bourgogne and Nolay.
The most famous town of all, the capital of the Burgundy wine region, is Beaune (65km) with its famous Hospices de Beaune, one of France's most prestigious sights. It's a great base for wine tasting and also a short distance to some of the famous Burgundy wine villages along the Route des Grands Crus. The Beaune Festival of Baroque Music takes place there during the month of July, with concerts every weekend.
Burgundy has always been known for its elegant châteaux with many magnificent homes or grounds open to visit including Bussy Rabutin, Commarin, Sully-en-Bourgogne, Époisses, Bazoches and Chateauneuf.
The abbeys of Fontenay and Vézeley, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are also worthy of a visit as well as magnificent Cluny further south.
This region is also great for all sorts of activities from horse-riding and tree-top activity centres to golf and even hot air balloon rides! Cycling is popular, both in the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan and along Burgundy canals such as near Pouilly-en-Auxois.
Across the region there are all sorts of events, especially in the spring and summer such as brocantes in July and August (flea markets/antique fairs) in surrounding towns and villages. In May Saulieu hosts a yearly gastronomic fair, Salon Gourmand and there's a ‘Fête de la Musique’ in June. The festival of Baroque Opera Music in Beaune takes place in July, there's the Cajun Nights in Saulieu at the start of August and the Musical Encounters at Vézelay at the end of August. October is a great time to visit with the Chablis wine festival taking place.

Best Suited For: All AgesThe Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan is just wonderful for families who love outdoor pursuits with its landscapes of mountains, forests and lakes. There are some great walking trails, cycling routes and mountain biking opportunities as well as watersports on the lakes – looks out for sailing at Lac des Settons as well as kayaking, canoeing and rafting along the rivers of the region.
There are also horse-riding centres, tree-top activity parks and another magnificent way to see the landscapes is a hot-air balloon ride for a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Cycling along the canals of Burgundy, pretty picnics and lazy days out in medieval market towns will also delight both the young and old.
Another great Burgundy day out is to the MuséoParc Alésia, which brings the Roman conquest of Gaul to life.
