The farmhouse-style kitchen is well-equipped for creating family feasts to enjoy outside on summer evenings whilst the eight sweet bedrooms, four on each of the upper floors, welcome you for a good night sleep. Outside, find the children’s play area and sandpit, nets for badminton, tennis or football and the glorious swimming pool superb for warm afternoons in the garden.

Château Cypres is blessed with such a fantastic location in Charente-Maritime where there are hours of sunshine throughout the year. You can stroll to the local village for morning pastries, simple groceries and meals out whilst some of the brilliant beaches of the Atlantic coast are within a 15-minute drive. The beach at Marennes, just 10km away, is especially great for youngsters with its lagoon at low tide or head slightly further south and enjoy locally harvested oysters from a little hut as the sun sets romantically on the west coast of France.

Experience the vast sandy shores of Île d'Oléron, the largest island off the French coast, and walk, cycle or horse-ride through its forests and nature reserves. Back on the mainland, learn about the region’s traditional salt marshes in Mornac-sur-Seudre, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ or hop on the steam train and admire the extraordinary landscapes by the Seudre river. You can also discover the salt marshes by boat whilst the cycling and walking opportunities in this area are endless.

Not to mention historic Rochefort, vibrant La Rochelle and beautiful Île de Ré, all perfect destinations for a wonderful day out. Royan also awaits with its seaside, markets, restaurants, cafes and bustling ambience with activities to appeal to every age.

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

Château Cypres is located in the Charente-Maritime region of south-western France, between Royan and Rochefort, close to Île d'Oléron and around a 10-minute drive to a wonderful beach and lagoon.

A 10-minute walk will bring you to a small local village with a restaurant, boulangerie, small grocery store and village bar. There is a larger supermarket, weekly market, summer night markets and other amenities within a short drive in a small attractive and historic town 8km by car.

This region is well-known for its excellent oysters and wonderful beaches. The beach at Marennes (10km) is the nearest where there’s a picturesque lagoon during low tide, an ideal spot where youngsters can splash around, backed by a couple of summer restaurants. Further south you will find little huts selling freshly harvested oysters and mussels, alongside the vast oyster farms. The French-speaking Cité de l'Huître is the place to go to learn all about the processes of oyster farming.

Drive over the bridge to Île d'Oléron, reached in around 20 minutes, the largest island off the French Atlantic coast with superb sandy beaches, nature reserves and forests, a paradise for walking, bird-watching, cycling, horse-riding and water-based activities. Learn all about the island’s rich maritime heritage, tour the traditional salt marshes, sample delicious Oléron oysters and seafood or just spend time relaxing, swimming or building sandcastles on the glorious beaches.

Back on the mainland, Mornac-sur-Seudre (19km) retains many of its traditional salt farming traditions and is nowadays classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its pretty lanes and old fishermen houses. You can discover more of the Seudre marshes on foot and bike, following marked trails that criss-cross this incredible region. Alternatively, take a boat trip or admire local landscapes near the Seudre river by riding on a tourist steam train between Saujon and La Tremblade.

You are also just half an hour by car from the historic harbour town of Rochefort (25km) or continue onwards to the fine coastal city of La Rochelle (59km), gateway to the idyllic Île de Ré. Heading south, Royan (25km) is a delightful seaside resort with beachfront promenades and atmospheric restaurants, cafes and shops.

One of Europe’s largest zoos, Zoo La Palmyre, is just north of Royan. In this area you will also find Luna Park, an evening amusement park open from late June to the end of August.

A family day out on Île d'Oléron is also a must, connected to the mainland via a bridge. With nature reserves, forests and huge sandy beaches, it’s fantastic for walking, cycling, horse-riding or simply building sandcastles. Surfing and diving are popular water-based activities here as well.

  • Superb

Brilliant house, very spacious, beautifully furnished, large pool. Well equipped.

  • An amazing week!

Posted by Mason Family & Friends on 08/06/2017

We have all come back with a tan after an amazing week at the chateau. Fab old property with everything we need, and we particularly liked the private pool and big secluded grounds.

  • We have already booked again for next year

Posted by Chloe K. on 30/05/2017

A beautiful chateau not far from the beach. It lived up to all our expectations with huge rooms, interesting items on display, wonderfully arranged. We were able to use the pool and the barbecue almost every day and there was bags of room for everybody. If you enjoy interesting old things and old architecture, as we do, this place is a must. We have already booked again for next year.

  • Charming

    Posted by Christine on 22/04/2017

We have had the pleasure in staying in a couple of the cottages now as always find them totally charming. We have taken the children and they always enjoy it too. But best please to relax and explore on the holidays without the kids! Riding a bike in the area is such a fun way to explore. and then enjoy a lovely glass of wine in your own garden area at the end of the day! We will be back...

  • A Terrific Week

    Created on 01/03/2017

We had a terrific stay at the Chateau in Feb 2017. It's a perfect setting for a relaxing holiday, slowing down the tempo of modern life, enjoying a few glasses of Pineau des Charentes and settling in to a rustic lifestyle. There's also plenty to see and do in the area. We had great fun visiting Saintes and Rochefort, to name but two locations. The house itself is quite unique (in a good way), combining an eclectic style of homeliness with a real and well-presented feeling of history. We all took to the house, it grew on us as the week went on and by the end of it we had all developed a real sense of belonging there. It became quite a comforting and reassuring sightseeing the outline of the house appear on the horizon as we drove back along the D728.
The children (aged between 1 and 3) all loved their time there, playing with the sand and on the swings and the slide - coats and wellies on, properly enjoying the outdoors.
In a nutshell, we would all highly recommend a stay in the Chateau and a big thank-you to our hosts for a terrific week.

  • Fabulous French Estate

Posted by Barbara and Colin on 10/10/2016

The moment we arrived and were shown our little 2 bed gite we were delighted with our choice. 'The cute rustic cottage for our 2 week stay was a joy. The French ladies who deal with the cleaning etc were lovely, happy and friendly. Even though the weather was changeable for the first 10 days we had a great holiday in this beautiful area of France. There is so much to see and do. The grounds and the little gardens for each gite and the pool are lovely and excellent for children being very secure with gates and a high wall. I cannot recommend it highly enough and we were quite sad to leave. The family who own the chateau and gites are a lovely family and we were lucky enough to meet them.

  • Very relaxing

    Posted by Brian on 01/07/2016

Just returned from our first holiday in France. We have fallen in love with the country and especially the people who where always helpful and accommodating wherever we went, from the Charante to Paris and Normandy. We packed a lot into our 16 days and on reflexion the most tranquil and relaxing time was in our accommodation at Chateau Cypres. We arrived very late after underestimating the drive from Paris but were met with a smile. The chalet (no.7) was just perfect for us and we really liked the decor and the overall setting of the gardens, the pool was perfect and we made great use of it for two very hot days when we took a break from our touring around the Charante, we took in La Rochelle, Cognac, Saintes and the Royan areas. We also met a very pleasant and helpful English girl, possibly Catherine's daughter, who gave us some tips on the local area and Marennes. The weather was fine and dry in the mid twenty degrees Celsius for most of our stay and was hot and 30 to 35 degrees Celsius for two days so overall no complaints, really enjoyed our experience and were sad to leave for our onward trip to Paris. Hopefully we will return to France and will definetely put Chateau Cypres top of our list. Thanks for everything, bon chance.

  • Great escape holiday

Posted by Lizzie M. on 17/02/2016

We have visit here several times, the accommodation is charming and comfortable with so much to do in the area. We have taken friends and family and all have loved it. There is something for children to do on site which is always an advantage and in low session we have even been able to take the dog (he loves it too!)

  • Lovely week in a beautiful Chateau!

Posted by Catherine W on 29/09/2015

What a beautiful historical chateau! We had a lovely relaxing week, although the time flew by too fast and we all wished we could of stayed for two weeks, but unfortunately work commitments just did not allow.Thank you.

  • Amazing cycling holiday destination

Posted by S Platt on 25/08/2015

Our aim when we stayed at Les Cypres was to cycle, and we found this most satisfactory. Bikes were delivered to the door (organized by the owner) and the area is criss-crossed with flat cycle paths. The property made a lovely place to get back to after a day of cycling. I recommend hiring a mid-week cleaner, because it is a big place, and old, and we found that things got disorderly and dusty quite quickly.

  • Wonderful winter getaway

Posted by Peter S on 25/08/2015

We saw an item on the internet about this property and it peaked our curiosity because we would not normally have gone away in the winter. It was wonderful sitting by the huge log fire in the kitchen while the Atlantic wind howled outside. Gave us a real feeling of old-fashioned France, not least because we hired a cook and she was hilarious with her baguettes and cheeses and her conviction that we don't know how to eat in Scotland! Full CH and everything we needed for a change of scenery during the bleak winter months.

  • Lovely stay at Chateau Cypres

Posted by John. M on 25/08/2015

We did so love being in this property, recommended to us by friends who stayed there a couple of years ago. Child-friendly and quirky, full of interesting nooks and crannies and amazing old objects. Every day we discovered something new. The kitchen is properly equipped, though a tad tired-looking, and everything was spotlessly clean. We particularly loved the "museum" area and the library. The pool was clean and the grounds ideal for children to run around in. Sheltered parking would have been a plus, but we were grateful for off-raod secure parking anyway. Village shops pretty minimal and seemed to be constantly shut - but that is France !

  • Another wonderful holiday at Chateau Cypres!

Posted by Neil O on 30/07/2015

We returned to Chateau Cypres in the middle of July having had a wonderful holiday last year. We weren't disappointed as, once again, the property proved to be a super venue for the family to get together. The chateau is well appointed with a very homely feel. Whilst the surrounding countryside is a beautiful area of France and we again enjoyed the history, the oysters and the beaches; the facilities at the chateau, particularly the pool, mean that you can, if you wish, also enjoy a relaxing day without having to travel. The owner is very helpful and professional. We look forward to returning next year.

  • The perfect summer getaway

    Posted by Fosters on 02/06/2014

Beautiful house and fantastic gardens. The children spent hours digging and creating things in the sand pit. Sea & landscapes very beautiful. Holiday enjoyed by all.

  • Thank you for a lovely stay

Posted by Dobbs family on 13/05/2014

Such a fine old place, rustic charm at its best, loaded with character with something new to discover every day. A great place to stay and the area was also excellent. The owners helped out daughter a great deal with various troubles, for which we will always be grateful. We certainly recommend this property.

  • Ideal venue for a family holiday

Posted by Simon & Trish Trule on 13/05/2014

Child friendly with stair gates and play areas. Lots of ornaments which I had to move out of the way of little fingers, but that was a small price to pay for such a lovely holiday house. The beach is nearby and we went there almost every day - be warned, the beaches are extremely crowded on a Sunday!

  • Perfect anniversary!

Posted by Susan Taylor on 13/05/2014

We rented this house for our 40th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The rooms are all spacious and lend themselves to large gatherings. The owner arranged a marquee in the garden and extra chairs (at a supplement) and also located local caterers for us. Unhappily the weather was mediocre (April) but that did not distract from a lovely holiday because the area has plenty to do and see and the house is wonderful.

  • A fun and fantastic chateau

    Created on 07/04/2014

A quaint and quirky property, perfectly delightful. Most comfortable with everything we needed, helpful and pleasant staff, plenty of privacy and the pool was to die for. We particularly appreciated the safety aspect, with everything either fenced or walled in, secure parking and so on.

  • Chateau Roche

Had a wonderful stay in this gorgeous property. Booked via some friends, I will certainly return. Loaded with charm, very helpful staff, lovely owner (quite a well-known author - wrote The Man With Green Fingers and others). Lovely pool. Handy for all shops and beaches. Excellent.
