What Oliver loves…
- This is a beautiful, large and comfortable Maison de Maître in a rural Cognac vineyard setting with large heated pool and beautiful walks right on the doorstep
- There are untreated apple, pear, plum, cherry, walnut and hazelnut trees in the gardens as well as vegetables and lots of the produce used is picked fresh on the day
- The foundations and cellar date back a thousand years to the house’s origins, the kitchen end of the house is over 400 years old and the main part of the house was rebuilt over 200 years ago.
- The woods are a forager’s paradise full of mushrooms, nuts, fruit and leaves and guests may see deer which live in the surrounding vines and woods
- If they chose to, guests can return home refreshed and transformed thanks to the extensive health and holistic services the owners offer, as well as their outstanding culinary skills! See 'Extras' tab for full details

La Maison Du Voyage is the labour of love of a dynamic and talented couple who wanted to change their lives and the lives of others.
After running successful companies in the UK, it was time for ‘the great escape’ and so La Maison Du Voyage was born. No strangers themselves to life’s stresses, they created a special haven where holidays and health meet.
Guests at La Maison Du Voyage are immersed in a relaxing and beautiful countryside setting surrounded by vines and horses. The 200-year-old Maison de Maître has been restored with care and love, to create a homely and cosy retreat.
Comfortable, airy bedrooms with views over the gardens and valley and comfortable beds with toppers and Egyptian cotton bedding ensure a great night’s sleep. There are two reception rooms with cosy sofas, a large, well-equipped kitchen and space for everyone to let go and relax.
Large, varied garden areas surround the house and the large warm pool, as well as lots of walks from the doorstep through the beautiful woods or vines to three different villages.
This historic area is bathed with light and offers beautiful rivers, outdoor activities, villages, churches, museums, markets, brocantes and plenty of festivals all summer. Angoulême is only 11 kilometres away, Cognac 27 kilometres and even the coast and La Rochelle are accessible.
Here, relaxing holidays can soon become life-changing holidays. The hosts, both passionate about well-being also offer their expert services to guests, who are free to immerse themselves into this world as little or as much as they wish. Even healthy and gourmet meals can be prepared by the qualified chef, whose culinary skills are spectacular! Local options such as fresh continental breakfast and more traditional vegetarian dishes are also possible, as well as delicious and fun meals around the firepit.
La Maison Du Voyage is the magic that happens when a beautiful place becomes more than just a home or a holiday, but a place which transforms and nourishes families and friends.

There is a lot to explore all over this stunning area, from Angouleme (11km) and especially heading towards Bordeaux.
The nearest village is just 2km away and offers several amenities such as butchers, bakers, hairdressers, chemist, doctors and a Sunday morning small market. There is also a restaurant and a bar within walking distance (1km) and many other gourmet restaurants and bars with live music at weekends are also close by.
Angouleme is a marvellous historical town sitting on a rocky promontory just above the Charente river and enjoying breath-taking views over the Charente Valley. Characterized by wide boulevards, ramparts, ancient churches and several museums, it is an interesting place to discover.
Just 5km east of Angouleme, you can visit the Charente Grotte de Vilhonneur which host the world famous wall paintings of Lascaux. All along these beautiful caves dating back to over 27,000 years ago, there are also many places where one can practice kayaking.
Cognac (27km) is also within easy reach: explore its gorgeous old town and visit the big Cognac houses both in the city and in Jarnac (20 mins) where you can enjoy fabulous brandy tastings.
If you fancy doing some watersports, drive to Le Plan d’eau St Yrieix in just 18mins (15km) where you will find a man made beach, inflatable water park, sailing boats, paddle boats and canoes to hire. It is s a lovely walk around the lake and there is a café for refreshments.
Hiking and cycling routes leave straight from the door and fishing places are just a 10 minute drive away. There are wonderful woods to explore around the home.
Further afield, the maritime town of La Rochelle is definitely a recommended day-trip out. It is a dynamic seaside city with a bustling daily market serving local produce, many places of historical interest, a modern marina and a pretty old port. Furthermore, Ile de Ré, the Cote Sauvage, the l’Ile d’Oleron and Royan are all attractive destinations with sandy beaches and summer music festivals.

How long have you owned the property?
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The space and farm yard feel of the gardens, the beauty of the house, the ceiling roses.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The house was first built over a thousand years ago. It was a chateau with a tower. The locals still call it by its real name. The main house is over 200 years old, the kitchen and buildings to the side are over 400 years old and it has the original cellars. The house was built by the owner of the surrounding vineyards and it was a working Cognac farm until we bought it. There were also cows, pigs and chickens and we still have the pigsty and cattle building. There is an ancient bread oven where the bread for the houses in the hamlet was baked.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We have but we are very discrete!
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Visit one of the Cognac houses in nearby Cognac or Jarnac. Go to The 27th, a market that fills the streets of the small town of Rouillac about 25 mintes drive. Selling everything from table clothes, pots and pans, fresh fruit and veg, fish and cheeses to knife sharpening, live stock and stalls selling food and drinks to keep you going.
A visit to the coast is a must. Aprox 90 minutes away we have the wonderful bustling seaside town of La Rochelle with its boutiques, market, street cafes, marina and street entertainment.
The tranquil and beautiful Island of light, Ile d’Oleron is a joy with its calm side and a 30 minute walk through the forest, listening to the roar of the sea as you get nearer, the wilder coast. Don’t forget to stop at one of the oyster sellers on the way home to pick up a shell fish feast.
The gorgeous, chic and eclectic Ile de Ré is one of our favourite places. We love La Flotte with its walled market and restaurants around the harbour and St Martin for its shops, cobbled streets and again the places to eat and have aperitifs watching the people go by. Most people hire bikes and there are cycle paths everywhere. We love to cycle from St Martin to one of the seafood sellers to eat lunch perched on a bench at the edge of the sea.
Bordeaux is less than 2 hours away and only 30 minutes by train and even Paris is only 90 minutes on the train, pop up for the day, shop, walk, see a show, have a meal and come home!
There are a couple of very delicious restaurants nearby as well as lots of very good (less expensive) ones to try. In summer you really need to try the Charentaise melon with pineau and the Oysters and sea food from the nearby coasts, the fish stalls in the markets are wonderful especially on Friday and Saturday mornings, everything is so fresh.
The Grotte de Vilhonneur which are caves 15kg East of Angouleme which predate the world famous paintings Lascaux with art on the walls from over 27,000 years ago!
The sunsets are often stunning, full of colour and the sky at night over the house, undiminished by city lights is full of stars and we often see the milky way.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area? Walk up the road to the woods, go straight on along the road or turn left or right to walk right inside the woods. Walk quietly and you will often see deer. Foraging is abundant. It is a wonderfully peaceful and calming place.
We are in the middle of working vines and love hearing the drone of a tractor, whinny of a horse, even the bubble of noise from neighbouring ducks and chickens at feeding time. There are country smells of course depending on which way the wind blows and the Vendange and smell of the grapes being crushed and fermenting in September is always exciting.
Thank you for a lovely holiday and for all the amazing food.
We are on our last day of the most amazing holiday. We just loved ale Maison Du Voyage, we could have moved in, it was idyllic. It had everything we could have wished for and Desri & Robin were the perfect hosts, respectful of our family holiday but on hand when we needed anything. The amazing (and healthy) juices & smoothies provided by Desri were the perfect start to the day and the beautiful meal she made us was delicious. Looking forward to another trip already.
Amazing Retreat for Positive Thinking!
We loved the idea of a place "where health meets holiday" and declared ourselves open to any therapy that might give us a boost for the remainder of the year and better equip us with the demands of our work (we both run our own businesses). And so it is that we now find ourselves bursting with positivity, fully-charged and ready for anything. It is safe to say we are not accustomed to feeling quite like this at the end of the school holidays. Some of this down to the basics, of course: five days being looked after in a beautiful house and garden in the Bordeaux sunshine with no kids, thank you universe. But we knew that was coming. What we didn't expect was to come back feeling completely nurtured from the inside out. And that is entirely down to our stay at La Maison du Voyage, the food, company and hospitality, and the conversation and reflection they facilitated.
Such A Wonderful Stay!
I stayed here for one week in June with my son his wife and young family. The house, outdoor space and surrounding area had something to offer for all ages. We had a super week. We were made to feel very welcome by Desri and Robin. Nothing was too much trouble. The house was spacious, well equipped and spotless. We all enjoyed using the pool. It was a very comfortable temperature and a good size with plenty of sun beds. I would definitely recommend trying the dinner and breakfast that can be supplied. I have never eaten such delicious, healthy beautiful food. We ate every night in the covered dinning area with its fairy lights and lovely view, it was ideal. Desri and Robin were perfect hosts, by the end of the week we felt like old friends. They managed to achieve the perfect balance of being available when needed and being discreet enabling us to feel relaxed and feel comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place and would definitely make a return visit.
Perfect For The Family!
We stayed at La Maison du Voyage for a week in May, the first time we have holidayed en famille: grandparents, two daughters and sons-in-law and two grandsons of 18 and 6 months. It was just perfect – enough space (and especially bathrooms!) for everyone so the infants’ routines weren’t disrupted. The house is very well equipped and comfortable, in a quiet secluded location, and everyone really enjoyed the large heated swimming pool. The bird life was remarkable: a cuckoo called all day, black red starts and kestrels were nesting on the property, we saw turtle doves and a hoopoe in the garden and one morning a hare lolloped along the terrace during breakfast. We went on relaxed walks through the neighbouring vineyards and forests and explored Angouleme and Cognac. Most evenings when the babies were in bed, we played boules and Molkky while supper cooked on the barbecue, then ate in the covered outside dining area. It was a great week - and the local Pineau was great too!
An amazing experience
Staying at La Maison du Voyage is an amazing experience all-together. The location in the sunny French countryside in the middle of vines makes it a romantic and spectacular get away. The hosts are incredibly welcoming and don't get me started on the culinary skills... The food in itself is worth the stay! I recommend the place and will go back any time.
We left truly re-energised!
La Maison du Voyage is the most relaxing place I've been in a very long time. It's luxurious but laid back, comfort and balance truly are at its heart. The fire-pit upon arrival was a highlight, the atmosphere of outdoor eating and the simplicity of cooking on fire were such a change from the city life we lead! The rest of our stay was just as pleasantly surprising and enchanting. From (raw!) cooking lessons and chats with the owner (who is a nutritionist and helped me enormously with some health issues on the two afternoons I spent with her) to swimming in the warm pool and walks in the beautiful woods, we left truly reenergised and looking forward to coming back.
5 stars for us, we are exited to rent it again!
My stay in the amazing house in the south-weest of France was simply amazing. I had the pleasure to go with 4 good friends for a week, we all needed some time off work and to recharge our batteries. The house has a very homely, cosy feeling to it and yet is is very big with many beautiful rooms. Perfect place to watch a good movie on comfy couch, make a delicious meal in the kitchen with the poele a bois lit or read a book in a deep bath!
The gardens are also very big, the cliché of a French domaine, with a large pool (with cover for cool and rainy days!). Surrounded by vines and a peaceful forest, the perfect place for long walks. The towns around were great to visit as well, Angouleme has some very nice restaurants and many villages around rent canoes and boats for adventures on the water.
We look forward to being back
We had a superb time both just the two of us alone and the week with our children and grandchildren. They especially loved the indoor spa pool and space to run and play!
We love everything you have done here, your love for the house shows. Thanks for the care you took, we look forward to being back.
