Upon leaving Maison de la Paix, surrounded by other beautiful houses and picturesque countryside, you are only a moment’s drive from a traditional village boasting fantastic architecture and spectacular views over the  Pyrénées-Atlantiques. With a small but delightful variety of quaint shops and restaurants here, you can easily spend the day ambling amongst its historic backdrop. Be sure to visit St Martin’s church, built in the 16th century and home to an array of beautiful artefacts. The village offers a monthly flea market and numerous festivities throughout the year including the popular wheat thrashing events and a Gala de Force - showcasing a selection of traditional sporting competitions.

The village is surrounded by an array of stunning mountains, the Rhune, the Mondarra in the Artamendi and the Ursuya to name a few. Pretty hillside villages to explore in the area include two of France’s Plus Beaux Villages; charming Ainhoa (18km) and Sare (16km), where you can take the old wooden train up to the summit of La Rhune, one of the most dominant peaks of the skyline, where there are some restaurants with incredible views as well as great hiking opportunities. Whether hiking or driving in this beautiful inland area of France, the viewpoints are astounding, and definitely worth the effort.

For a change of scenery head coast-bound for one of the most famous stretches of coastline in the world. For vibrant town life, enjoy the hustle and bustle of Biarritz (11km), an elegant seaside resort dating back to the 19th century when aristocracy built their summer residences along this part of the coast, including the well-known Hotel du Palais, built by the wife of Napoleon III on the famous Grande Plage. You will find some wonderful restaurants in the Port des Pecheurs, the former fishing port, where you can buy delicious fresh seafood. Food lovers shouldn’t miss the fantastic market at the Halles de Biarritz offering many wonderful Basque specialities. Another one of the town’s highlights is the incredible Rocher of the Vierge peninsular, which can be visited via the Eiffel bridge that connects it to the mainland or the fascinating lighthouse in the northern part of the town where there are some breathtaking views.

There are so many wonderful beaches along this fantastic coastline including La Plage de la Cote des Basques, which has become a favourite for surfers. Indeed, this area has become a surfing mecca with surfers from all over the world being attracted to this part of the Basque coastline and there are plenty of surfing schools for abilities and all ages.

If it’s a slightly quieter coastal day trip you’re after, head 6km to the idyllic seaside village of Bidart, known for its stunning natural beauty. Full of character and plenty of shops and restaurants, it boasts 6 spectacular beaches, equipped to fulfil surf enthusiasts and beach bums alike.

Other fabulous coastal areas to visit include the picturesque town of Ciboure (11km) to the south where Matisse once lived and the lively resort of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (10km) with a great sandy beach and plenty of family-friendly activities as well as an abundance of golf courses and lovely walks along the surrounding coastline and hills.

Indeed, this whole region offers an extended range of outdoor activities, such as walking, horse-back riding, fishing, golf, cycling, canoeing and many others including water-sports along the coast.
