Relax by the swimming pool and gaze at the stunning views of La Rhune in the distance – this 18th century Basque farmhouse is as characterful as it is beautiful and a great place to stay to both relax and explore the wonderful region around you.

Indeed, the large grounds, swimming pool and various terraces make Les Dunes a particularly lovely spot. As the sun sets, enjoy al-fresco meals by the summer kitchen and plancha-style barbecue as the views of the hills and mountains are replaced by stars in the clear bright skies. Make the most of the vast space of the lawned gardens, find a shady spot under one of the trees or soak up the sun by the glorious swimming pool.

Inside, this is a traditional Basque home with many original features such as grand fireplaces, wood-beamed ceilings and interesting artefacts and pieces of art – this warm and welcoming home has a true sense of character. Each of the five spacious bedrooms has its own sweet style, most with an en-suite bathroom and lovely views from the pretty windows. Subtle modern touches also add to the home’s appeal – such as the fantastic library upstairs with its own projector and screen!

Within a 10-minute drive, the local village has all that you need for groceries and restaurants and there’s even a Michelin-starred establishment a little further away. You are also close to some of the region’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ such as Sare and Ascain, as well as the wonderful seaside town of St-Jean-de-Luz with its sandy beach, twice-weekly market and family-friendly atmosphere.

Of course, many other beaches of the Atlantic coast are waiting to be explored including some of the best surfing hot-spots near Biarritz. Closer to home, canoe or kayak along the river near the local village, spend summer days at the nearby lake or discover the beauty of the area through hiking either by the mountains or coast in the stunning Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

In a semi-rural setting, just off a country road in the Basque province of Labourd in south-western France, Les Dunes enjoys a countryside location close to some of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ whilst also being only a 20-minute drive to the lovely seaside town of St-Jean-de-Luz.

Within a 10-minute drive you can reach the local village where you will find a bakery and food shops. It’s a charming place, popular due to its superb setting surrounded by such stunning landscapes. There’s plenty to do in and around the village as well – look out for quad biking, paint-ball and hand-gliding, kayaking and canoeing along the river as well as a lake with an inflatable water park open in the height of the summer. Not to mention the fantastic hiking opportunities nearby. Food-lovers note that there is a Michelin starred restaurant within a ten-minute drive.

Some of the region’s prettiest Basque villages are also within a short drive such as Ascain with its Roman bridge, Sare with its festivities and traditions as well as tiny Ainhoa with its exquisite architecture – all three are classified as France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Spend the day by the coast at one of the many beautiful Atlantic beaches nearby – start off in the seaside town of St-Jean-de-Luz with its lovely shops, twice-weekly market, superb golf courses and sandy beach or head north to the beaches near Biarritz, many especially popular with surfers such as Plage de la Côte des Basques or even the stunning shores of Anglet, around half an hour away.

If you can tear yourself away from the countryside, a day out in Biarritz is also a lot of fun – wander along La Grande Plage admiring some of the Art Deco architecture, climb up the lighthouse for amazing views or enjoy some of the finest seafood by the port. Just south of the busy town, both Bidart and Guéthary are charming places for a lunch out or day by the ocean.

Another wonderful aspect of this part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region is that you are so close to the border with Spain. Visit the delightful fishing village of Hondarribia or drive as far as the cities of San Sebastian and even Bilbao.
