Overview

Ideal for Kids Hot Tub Walk to Beach Walk to Village

The location of Le Toucan is mesmerising; a natural setting on the heights of the cliffs with wonderful views of the ocean below. Despite this feeling of remoteness, you are within striking distance to the charming Basque village of Bidart and elegant Biarritz is just a 10-minute drive away.

This beautiful Basque home has picture book windows and pretty green shutters allowing light to flood in to the contemporary open-plan living space and doors open up to decked terraces looking out over the trees towards the sea. The four bedrooms over four levels are cool, bright and modern, each one featuring double beds, one with an extra bed on a mezzanine level and one with a balcony overlooking the ocean.

Outside there is space to relax on one of the various terraces, prepare long lunches on the plancha or sip wine as the sun sets. On the upper terrace with marvellous sea-views, you will find a luxurious Norwegian jacuzzi, a special place to spend time with friends or family with stunning natural landscapes around you.

The ‘Plage des 100 Marches’ is just 400m from the villa via a small path, a beautiful and remote beach, popular with surfers, accessed via one hundred steps from the cliff’s edge. Even in the height of summer it usually feels less crowded than some of the other more easily reached beaches further up the coast and adds to the magic of this stunning setting.

You can hire bikes to cycle to Bidart, a local Basque village full of character with a handful of restaurants, a bakery and supermarket. You’re also not far from the great beachside restaurants, superb golf course and beaches at Plage d'Ilbarritz and Milady, both popular with surfers and families or drive to the heart of Biarritz in just ten minutes where you can admire some of the elegant architecture, dine in wonderful restaurants and shop in the town’s great local market.

After visiting Biarritz, return to the slower pace of your exquisite villa where you can take in the green and ocean views and appreciate the peace around you, knowing that town life is so near.

Le Toucan feels like a remote and quiet location, set in a natural environment on the heights of the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, just south of the heart of Biarritz, in south-west France.

You can walk down the path and reach the cliffs and walk down to the famous ‘Plage des 100 Marches’ where you climb down 100 steps down to the beautiful beach, popular with surfers and at times less crowded than some of the beaches which are more easily accessible across this Basque coastline. There are some amazing hiking trails across this part of the coastline as well.

The pretty Basque village of Bidart is 1.5km away so you will need a car or keen cyclists can hire bikes to potter around. Here you will find all the amenities you will need such as a handful of restaurants, a bakery and a supermarket. Bidart is full of Basque character and a lovely place to spend time with stunning glimpses of the ocean.

To the north are larger, more accessible beaches such as Plage d'Ilbarritz (2.5km) where you will also find a great golf course with amazing views as well as a couple of famous beachside restaurants. Plage de Milady (2.8km) is also a popular place with a nice promenade and playground and the fantastic museum Cité de l'Océan nearby.

If you wish to experience town-life, head north to the heart of Biarritz (6km), an elegant seaside resort dating back to the 19th century when aristocracy built their summer residences along this part of the coast, including the well-known Hotel du Palais, built by the wife of Napoleon III on the famous La Grande Plage.

You will find some wonderful restaurants in the Port des Pecheurs, the former fishing port, where you will find fresh seafood. Food lovers don’t miss the amazing market at the Halles de Biarritz including many wonderful Basque specialities. Some of the local specialities include the local touron (marzipan), locally cured ham as well as mussels, mushrooms and more.

Another one of the town’s highlights is the incredible Rocher of the Vierge peninsular, which can be visited via the Eiffel bridge that connects it to the mainland or the fascinating lighthouse in the northern part of the town where there are some incredible views.

There are many other wonderful beaches along this 6km coastline including La Plage de la Cote des Basques, which has become a favourite for surfers. Indeed, Biarritz has become a surfing mecca with surfers from all over the world being attracted to this part of the Basque coastline and there are plenty of surfing schools for abilities and all ages. Oliver’s Travels guests can arrange surf coaching or just equipment hire during their stay.

There are also some idyllic Basque villages inland to explore such as two of France’s Plus Beaux Villages; pretty Ainhoa (24km) and Sare (23km), where you can take the old wooden train up to the summit of La Rhune, one of the most dominant peaks of the Pyrénées, where there are some restaurants with incredible views as well as hiking opportunities.

Indeed, this whole region offers an extended range of outdoor activities, such as walking, horse-back riding, fishing, cycling, canoeing and many others including water-sports along the coast.

There are some great activities that can be arranged for Oliver’s Travel’s younger guests such as kids golfing lessons, bike rental for all ages and surfing lessons for the family. Skateboard hire and Segway tours can also be arranged for families.

You need to be steady on your feet to access the nearest beach which is accessed from the cliff top via 100 steps but once you are there it’s beautiful and a popular spot for surfers.

The 6km of coastline around Biarritz includes many other wonderful beaches more suitable for families, not just La Grande Plage in the heart of the centre but also smaller beaches such as Plage Milady (with a promenade, playground and nearby museum Cité de l'Océan) and Cotes des Basques, which has also become a favourite for surfers.

Indeed, Biarritz has become a surfing mecca with surfers from all over the world being attracted to the 6km of Biarritz coastline and beyond and there are plenty of surfing schools for beginners of all ages including children.

In the heart of Biarritz you can take a little road-train along the coast for a more leisurely way to see the town’s coast whilst the more energetic can head north to the Lighthouse and climb the 200 or so steps to be rewarded with magnificent views.

If you want to explore further afield, drive south to St-Jean-de-Luz (15km) where you’ll find plenty of family-friendly activities such as trampoline parks, mini golf and another road-train to beautiful sandy beaches featuring playgrounds and games.

Real train lovers should head inland to Sare (23km) to catch the old wooden train up to the summit of La Rhune mountain where you are greeted with spectacular views of the Pyrénées and coast on a clear day.
