Step through the arched door of Le Sirocco and be enchanted by this characterful village home. Situated in one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, only a ten-minute drive to the beaches of the Atlantic coast, this pretty house offers the perfect opportunity to explore this alluring region close to Biarritz.

Experience the authenticity of Basque village life – this traditional home has been renovated to a lovely standard and offers both comfort and style. Light shines into the cosy living and dining room and the bright, modern kitchen is brilliantly equipped as well as having doors leading straight out to the garden.

Three pretty bedrooms offer space for a family or group of friends – a ground floor double with beautifully tiled floors and charming French windows as well as two bedrooms upstairs, including the main double with a balcony looking out towards the magnificent summit of La Rhune.

On summery days, sit outside on the terrace with a glass of local wine, perhaps as kids play in the little garden, and enjoy meals al-fresco by the barbecue. Of course, you don’t have to cook for yourselves – just wander into the heart of Ascain for restaurants, bars and cafes, all just a short walk away.

Explore some of the amazing scenery that surrounds Ascain – many hiking trails start from the village and horse-riding is also a fine way to appreciate the stunning vistas around you. For an even more relaxing way to visit the Pyrenees, take the little wooden train all the way up to the top of La Rhune for yet more wonderful walking opportunities.

The family-friendly sandy beach at St-Jean-de-Luz is nearby, as well as popular surfing spots dotted across the coastline as far as Biarritz and beyond. A trip to the glitzy town of Biarritz is also a must whether you’re wishing to ride the waves, shop to your heart's content or admire the Art Deco architecture and soak up the ambience by the impressive La Grande Plage.

This delightful detached house is in the pretty Basque village of Ascain, one of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, only a ten-minute drive from the lovely sandy beaches of the Atlantic coastline and a short drive from Biarritz.

Just a few steps down the road you will find a restaurant and a couple of shops – how great to be able to pick up pastries and fresh bread so easily for your breakfast each morning. Wander under ten minutes to the very heart of the village with more restaurants, bars and useful amenities such as a small supermarket and pharmacy. A little further out, the village also has its own tennis courts and public open-air swimming pool open in July and August afternoons.

La Nivelle river passes through the north of the village and the famous Roman bridge, Ur Hertsi, is one of the many highlights to visit – the bridge leads to a small park with a little playground for youngsters and picnic benches looking over the river – it’s a very pretty spot.

Indeed, the village is surrounded by magnificent landscapes, being in the foothills of the mighty La Rhune – many wonderful hiking trails start in the area and horse-riding is also a fantastic way to appreciate the beauty around you. Another great way to visit the summit of La Rhune is via the little wooden train en route to the village of Sare – a great day out for all ages!

Sare is another picturesque village to explore, as are Ainhoa and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port – soak up the traditional Basque culture, try some wonderful regional cuisine and take in the breathtaking vistas around you in the incredible region of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Of course, you are also so close to the coast – at the lovely seaside town of St-Jean-de-Luz you will find superb golf courses, a family-friendly sandy beach as well as lovely shops and a twice-weekly Farmer’s market. It’s neighbouring town, Ciboure, is another must-see with its colourful houses by the port and historic links with Henri Matisse.

Not forgetting the glitz and glamour of Biarritz which is also so nearby. Stroll along La Grande Plage, climb to the top of the lighthouse or cross the bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel to reach the Rocher de la Vierge and marvellous Atlantic views. You’ll find great beaches, shops, museums, an aquarium, an indoor market and some amazing restaurants as well as a vibrant night-life for a complete change of scene!

Ascain is a lovely village for families. Wander down to local restaurants and shops or take a picnic to the river’s edge, near the historic Roman bridge, followed by a play in the little playground or a run around the park. There is also a tennis club within walking distance as well as an outdoor swimming pool which is usually open summer afternoons in July and August.

In the foothills of La Rhune, there are many walking trails nearby as well as horse-riding. One especially great way to visit the summit of La Rhune is by taking the old wooden train that departs fairly close by and takes you up to the very top where you can see the breathtaking vistas all around you. Look out for family-friendly events taking place in conjunction with the railway - it really is a lovely day out.

Of course, you are never too far from the Atlantic coastline with St-Jean-de-Luz just a short drive away. Play on the sandy beach, which has family activities in the summer, and tour the town with the little road-train. Further north there’s mini-golf as well as other beaches, some ideal for sandcastles, others surfing hot spots, all the way up to Biarritz and beyond.

Biarritz also offers a wealth of family activities such as museums, the aquarium, another road-train tour and the lighthouse as well as amazing beaches suitable for a variety of ages.
