Just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic coast, with pretty ocean views, Le Grec is a lovely apartment within walking distance to both the beach and St-Jean-de-Luz in this beautiful part of south-western France.

A ground floor apartment, part of a large contemporary villa, each room benefits from direct access to its own delightful decked terrace with picturesque garden views stretching as far as the sea. There are two modern bedrooms, each with their own en suite shower room as well as an open-plan kitchen-diner and living area. Sit outside and admire the ever-changing colours of the sky as the sun sets accompanied by a glass or two of wine from the Basque Irouleguy vineyards.

Wander down to the local beach, another superb spot for a sun-downer in the evening or swimming in the day, whilst the most adventurous can join the coastal path that passes nearby and continues as far as Hendaye near the Spanish border.

You can also walk, cycle or drive to the wonderful seaside town of St-Jean-de-Luz, around 2km away, with its sandy beach, lovely shops, twice-weekly Farmers market and relaxing yet friendly vibe. Ciboure, once the home of Henri Matisse, is also just across the river and a charming place to spend some time.

The glitzy town and surfing beaches of Biarritz are also waiting to be explored to the north or head inland to discover some of the rural villages of the Basque country such as Sare and Ainhoa, both classified as two of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.

Whether you’re a keen walker, surfer or lover of pretty towns and beaches, Le Grec offers comfort and charm in a brilliant location on the Basque coast.

Le Grec is situated a few minutes walk to a picturesque beach, just 2km from the delightful seaside town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and a 20-minute drive south of Biarritz in the wonderful and diverse region of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

With pretty sea views, you can walk to the beach which is around 700m away – it’s a lovely beach with a mixture of sand and pebbles. Look out for the summer bistro which has a wonderful terrace where you can gaze at the beautiful sunset. You can also join the magnificent 25km long coastal pathway which links Bidart with Hendaye near the Spanish border – this apartment is wonderful for keen walkers.

You can also stroll into St-Jean-de-Luz (2km) in around half an hour or it’s just a few minutes by car. Here you will find restaurants, supermarkets and other town amenities alongside plenty of family fun with its sandy beach. The town offers lovely shops and a delightful market hall open daily as well as a Farmer’s market every Tuesday and Friday morning.

Cross over the bridge and visit the attractive town of Ciboure (5km), where the artist Henri Matisse once lived. Admire its old town and timber-framed buildings, wander around the pretty fishing port and pick up all sorts of regional produce at the Saturday morning market.

This area is home to two golf courses, a tennis club and a swimming pool complex just outside the centre of St-Jean-de-Luz. There’s also plenty for children with play areas on the beach or by the river, a little road-train and mini-golf just north of the apartment.

The glitz of Biarritz (16km) is also easily reached – watch surfers ride the waves at Plage de la Côte des Basques (13km), admire the shops and restaurants downtown or wander up the famous La Grande Plage, backed by examples of art-deco architecture, perhaps even as far as the lighthouse where a steep climb to the top will be rewarded with spectacular views.

There are also lots of opportunities to explore the interior of the beautiful Pyrénées-Atlantiques with villages such as Sare (16km), Ainhoa (22km) or even as far as Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, an hour away by car. Spain is also close with the border just 20km away – look out for pretty villages on the Spanish side such as Hondarribia (24km) or the great city of San Sebastian (38km).
