East of Split on Croatia’s beautiful Dalmatian Coast, Omiš offers wonderful beaches and a varied water sports scene. Canyoning, rafting, canoeing and zip-lining across the River Cetina are among the activities that make this attractive town a popular choice for thrill-seekers.

If that’s too much exertion, never fear – Omiš is ideal for beach relaxation too. Velika Plaza is long, sandy and perfect for families. Pebble beaches Brzet and Slavinj are also a short walk away, and
there are many more stunning beaches along the coast. Towards Split, or east towards Makarska, you’ll find favourites such as Jesenice, Baška Voda and Dugi Rat. Alternatively, hop in a boat and discover the islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta, which have more than their share of amazing beaches too.

Omiš is also well known for its pirate history. The town makes great play of this, with all sorts of attractions on the theme. A trip out on a pirate ship is one for all the family, and each summer there is also a pirate festival with re-enactments of battles of old.

Also of historic note are the town’s mighty fortresses. You will enjoy fine views if you trek up to 13th-century Mirabella or 15th-century Starigrad. Another landmark found high up in the hills of Omiš is the Mila Gojsalič statue, depicting a Croatian folk heroine sometimes referred to as the country’s Joan of Arc.

You’ll be close enough to Split to make an easy day trip to Croatia’s lively second city. Look out for world-class landmarks like Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St Domnius, and cultural highlights including the Meštrović Gallery and the Split Gallery of Fine Arts. The Riva waterfront is perfect for people-watching from the chic café terraces, while Marjan Forest Park is the city’s green lung which offers a superb outlook on the Adriatic from the hilltop.

If the views of Brač from your villa tempt you to take a closer look, you will be rewarded with much more than beaches – although Zlatni Rat alone is enough of a reason to visit. Make time for Supetar while you are there, with its attractive Old Town and harbour, or head for the towering peak of Vidova Gora to survey the area from 778m up.

Region

The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.

The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.

One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.

Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.

The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.

The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.

The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The youngest of the family are sure to be charmed by Croatia. Omiš is the ideal base, as it has gorgeous beaches east and west, island adventures within reach, and a great range of activities to try.
As well as water sports like rafting and canoeing, there are opportunities to go horse-riding, paintballing, or zip-lining 150m above the rugged Cetina Canyon – a truly unforgettable adventure you can share.

At 800m long, you shouldn’t have trouble finding a good spot on Velika Plaza, Omiš’ sandy beach. Alternatively, you could head out to one of the pebbly beaches like Brzet and Slavinj, both close to town. When it’s time for dinner, Omiš has lots of choices of cafés and restaurants, including a Flintstones-themed eatery high up in the hills. Elsewhere, you’ll find pizzas, Mexican food, burgers and all their favourites.

There are plenty of fun places to visit outside of Omiš. Head down to Makarska and you can experience the incredible views from the Biokovo Skywalk, a glass platform which extends out from the mountains. Further west, not far from the city of Šibenik, is the amazing Krka National Park. Here, the big attraction is the spectacular waterfalls, but this vast area of nature is great for walking and cycling too.

Nearby Šibenik hosts the excellent International Children’s Festival each summer, so stop by in June for all sorts of entertainment aimed at a younger audience. This impressive city is also home to a water park, an aquarium, and numerous historic fortresses. A short drive from the centre, there is the Dubrava Falconry Centre, where children can meet birds of prey in a beautiful forest location.

Split is a great city for families, and just 25km west of Omiš. As well as the huge Diocletian’s Palace, you’ll find a semi-submarine, large aquarium and a big indoor play centre at Poljud Stadium. Znjan Beach has paddle boats, trampolines and bouncy castles, while Marjan Forest Park offers lovely views and nice picnic spots. Be sure not to miss Froggyland, the eccentric frog museum, or the Game of Thrones-themed tours which take in the locations featured in the series – among them Klis Fortress to the north of the city.

A beautiful and very practical house with a stunning view! Perfect for our group of four families who all had good individual space in the two apartments, and lovely shared space for outdoor meals and drinks, as well as a great pool. We loved everything about the house and the area. We recommend to have a car (or electrical bike) as it's quite a walk up from Omis during hot summer months, but totally worth it for the view! We enjoyed mountain walks following a path behind the house, up to the fortress and down to the river on the other side for a fresh swim. A beach about five minutes drive south was a favourite and easy to combine with staying at the house. We'd love to come back and would highly recommend.

The view is beautiful, hard to describe in words. Everything, but really everything, has been thought of. From the booking to the handing over of the keys by Petar to the departure, someone was always available and immediately fulfilled our wishes.
