Known as the ‘Golden Isle’, the island of Krk is large enough that you can enjoy your whole holiday there without needing to cross the bridge to the mainland. This connection and the fact that Rijeka Airport is located on the island make Krk very accessible.

In the town that shares the island’s name, you can enjoy some beautiful beaches and various cultural attractions. As well as the city walls, which date back more than 2000 years, be sure to visit the 13th-century Frankopan Castle, a clifftop fortress known for its square and round towers and magnificent Adriatic views. The City Hall and Krk Cathedral are also worth seeing, the tower of the latter being the stand-out sight of the Krk skyline.

Elsewhere on the island, you will be able to enjoy the local wine made around Vrbnik. Surrounded by vineyards, this town is known for its Zlahtina wine. This will complement the excellent Mediterranean cuisine – locally grown herbs and vegetables and locally produced olive oil are among the staples on the island.

You will find good restaurants and tavern-like konobas in towns all over Krk, but one particularly notable venue is Volsonis in Krk Town. This nightclub and cocktail bar offers you the chance to sip your drinks in Roman catacombs that are 2000 years old.

On the far eastern side of the island, Baška is a popular resort thanks to its 2km-long pebble beach, perfect for sunbathing on a lounger or taking to the sea for some water sport. The setting really is idyllic, with crystal clear waters and mountains providing the town with a rocky backdrop. With good dining and entertainment options, Baška is one not to miss.

The island is ideal for active pursuits, whether you go hiking in the mountains or go scuba diving to see the relics lurking beneath the waves. Zip-lining and quad biking are among the other adventures on offer. Take a boat trip or indulge in a mud bath at Meline Beach for something more relaxed.

Region

Krk, the largest island in the Kvarner Gulf, offers visitors an enchanting blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture. This island paradise, with its captivating landscapes, historic towns, and warm Mediterranean climate, has rightly earned its reputation as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations.

Krk's rugged and diverse geography is a significant part of its appeal. The island boasts a picturesque coastline with countless coves, bays, and pristine beaches to explore. For those looking to relax and unwind, Krk’s beautiful, serene beaches Baska Beach and Malinska Beach are perfect spots to unwind. The calm, crystal-clear waters and warm sun provide an ideal setting for a peaceful day by the sea.

The Adriatic Sea provides the perfect playground for water sports enthusiasts - kayaking, windsurfing and jet-skiing are all popular activities around the island. The crystal-clear waters are also perfect for snorkelling and diving. Many tour operators on the island offer family-friendly excursions where you can explore the underwater world and observe marine life together. Krk also has several marinas, making it a popular stop for sailors and boaters exploring the Adriatic.

Krk’s landscape also includes lush greenery and rolling hills, ideal for hiking and cycling. Numerous bike paths and trails wind through the miles of untouched nature. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a novice, you can explore the island at your own pace or join one of the many bike tours on offer, enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking scenery. The serene countryside offers splendid vistas, and the scents of Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and lavender fill the air.

The city of Krk, the island's main hub, is a charming blend of history and modernity. The well-preserved ancient city walls and medieval architecture are a testament to its storied past. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Frankopan Castle, a magnificent fortress that dates back to the 12th century. The island also boasts numerous churches and chapels, including the Cathedral of St. Mary, which features Romanesque and Gothic elements, and the small church of St. Donatus, one of the oldest on the island.

Krk's culinary scene is a rooted in the Croatian lifestyle, emphasising locally sourced ingredients and flavours. The island's cuisine is known for its use of olive oil, fresh seafood, and an array of herbs. In the picturesque towns and villages, you'll find cozy family-run restaurants and taverns offering hearty traditional dishes like "šurlice," a homemade pasta, and "pašticada," a slow-cooked beef stew. The island is also renowned for its sheep cheese, such as “šur", and the exceptional local wine "Žlahtina," which pairs perfectly with the island’s fresh seafood. Dining in a konoba, a traditional Croatian tavern, allows you to savour the essence of Krk's cuisine while enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals.

While Krk itself has so much to offer, it also serves as a gateway to explore the wider Kvarner region and the nearby islands. A short ferry ride connects Krk to Cres, Rab, and other smaller islands, each with their own unique charm and attractions. The proximity to the mainland makes it easy to embark on day trips to cities like Rijeka and Opatija, famous for their historic architecture and buzzing cultural scenes.

Krk offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking natural beauty, history, culture, and delicious cuisine. With its rich history, warm hospitality, and breathtaking landscapes, Krk has rightfully earned its place as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a cultural experience, this “Golden Island” island has it all.

There’s plenty to see and do with the kids on the island of Krk. First of all, the isle has many wonderful beaches, some of which are particularly suited to children. Near the centre of Krk Town, you’ll find Portapisana, a Blue Flag beach with pedalos, parasols and cafés, while Vrbnik has the lovely Zgribnica Beach, which has similar facilities.

Baška is one of the island’s best-known and most beautiful beaches and has play areas and slides. With its mix of sand and pebble beaches and some remote beaches only accessible by boat, Krk really has something for all tastes. There are many boat excursions you can take, such as glass-bottomed boat tours and ones with swimming stops en route. Another popular experience is to venture out in a semi-submarine to see an underwater sculpture park, where you might even meet a mermaid.

You can also find amusement parks in Krk, Malinska and Baška, with all sorts of fun rides and play activities. Another highlight for young children will be to take the panoramic tourist train that rides along the coast – also a great way to admire the views for yourselves.

The Biserujka Cave is undoubtedly one of the island’s best family attractions. Found in Rudine village, this will give you an underground adventure and a little respite from the hot sun. The cave is an important site as it hosts a variety of wildlife such as crustaceans and beetles. Be sure to get there early, as this popular attraction gets busy during the day.

Also great for nature-loving kids, Baška Aquarium offers a diverse array of creatures from the Adriatic. Another aquarium can be found in Krk, along with a terrarium where you can see lizards, snakes and the like, while the aquarium itself has fish species from all over the world.

All sorts of sporting activities can be enjoyed on Krk too, including mini-golf, table tennis and beach volleyball. Still, the one which will provide the most spectacular view is surely the Edison Zipline. Once you’ve been trained up, you will be taken by jeep to the start of the course, which, as the highest point, offers a wonderful overview of the south of the island and the Adriatic Sea.
