Your villa is settled in the beautiful Opatija Hills, located within the Opatija Riviera of Croatia. Many come to Croatia for its spellbinding beauty and fairy tale prettiness, and although many areas are famed for their influx of tourists (you may have HBO series Game of Thrones to thank for that!), there are still vast areas of unspoilt prettiness prepared to transport you back to a simpler, slower time, a place where you can forget the modern world exists at all if you wish.

There is much nearby to explore including the small village of Ika, renowned for its fishing and shipbuilding past. There are a great number of nearby beaches, including Ika Beach. It has pebbles but the water is gentle, calm and clear. You can also breathe in that easy Adriatic air. Here you’ll find all that you might expect from a historic Croatian village; taverns raucous in their own way, restaurants serving up elegant seafood dishes (naturally it’s the speciality of the area) thanks to the climate, conditions and proximity to the water. There are also churches, boars bobbing gently along the harbour and scenic Croatian homes. What’s so wonderful is that you’ll soon find yourself easing into a calmer pace of life.

Relaxation is aplenty here, but what if you have more adventurous tastes? Fortunately, this is catered for too. If you wish, you can take part in fishing excursions, enjoy many a hike through stunning natural beauty, dive into the pristine waters while looking back at that alluring coastline dotted with its chocolate-box worthy houses, go cycling, take in the botanical gardens, visit a library or enjoy many water sports. You can also visit a casino, try your hand at horse riding and explore beyond your immediate surroundings. Kvarner Bay is one such option, as is the exciting city of Rijeka, the Istrian Peninsula and the islands beyond, such as Krk, with its upbeat aura, secret bays and thrilling bars, or Cres, which boasts its own Venetian tower and spellbinding forests. This is also a great option for animal lovers looking to see a griffon vulture in its natural habitat.

Ika also boasts a few intriguing options if you wish to stay close. Home to the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, there’s a real buzz about the place. Croatia is famous for festivals and a fish festival will see you rewarded with a sublime (and freshly caught) fish supper while also giving you an authentic look at local life, which remains largely unchanged to this day.

The Opatija Riviera is a famed tourist gem, rather glitzy, and packing plenty of history and culture. There’s a 14th century Benedictine abbey, Opatija Sv. Jakova, Angiolina, the town park, and the famous Maiden with the Seagull statue which serves as somewhat of an emblem for the area. There’s no way you can get bored with such variety on your doorstep.

Region

Opatija is a picturesque coastal resort nestled on the northeastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. A charming destination, perfect for those seeking relaxation, elegance, and natural beauty. Opatija's history is rich, its culture diverse, and its scenery breathtaking.

Opatija is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural heritage. Strolling through its streets, you'll encounter a mix of architectural styles, from the grandeur of Austro-Hungarian to the charm of Belle Époque. The town's historical past is brought to life in its iconic landmarks, such as Villa Angiolina, an elegant 19th-century villa that now houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, and the
Church of St. James, a stunning neo-Romanesque structure.

In the 19th century Opatija gained prominence as a desirable retreat for European aristocracy. Opatija's mild climate and stunning natural surroundings made it a popular destination for the elite. The town was transformed into a sought-after spa and resort destination, and it became a fashionable resort for Europeans, known for its beautiful gardens, grand villas, and splendid promenade.

Opatija's appeal lies not only in its historical charm but also in its stunning natural surroundings. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. The mild Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm summers and mild winters, is a key draw for visitors year-round. The town is also blessed with beautifully maintained parks and gardens, such as the Angiolina Park, which showcases a variety of plant species and sculptures, as well as the St.
James Park with its exotic plants and panoramic views of Kvarner Bay.

The 12-kilometer-long coastal promenade - the “Lungomare” - offers stunning vistas of the sea and surrounding islands, making it a favourite spot for leisurely walks. The Lungomare also connects Opatija to neighbouring towns Lovran and Ičići, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the coastline at their own pace.

Opatija has a noteworthy coffee culture. You can savour your coffee or tea at one of the many cafés along the Lungomare, enjoying the beautiful views and the gentle sound of the sea. It's a cherished part of the Opatija experience.

Opatija hosts a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. From concerts and art exhibitions to festivals celebrating local traditions and international music, the town offers a vibrant cultural scene that caters to a variety of tastes. The Opatija Summer Stage, a popular open-air venue, hosts numerous events during the summer season, including classical concerts and theatre performances.
Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, diving, and snorkelling in the region’s crystal-clear waters. For hikers and nature lovers, the Učka Nature Park is just a short drive away, and offers rewarding hiking trails that lead to panoramic vistas.

While Opatija itself is a captivating destination, it also serves as an excellent base for day trips to other picturesque places in the region. You can explore nearby towns like Rijeka, Croatia's largest port city, or the historic hilltop town of Mošćenice. Additionally, the islands of Krk and Cres are easily accessible from Opatija and offer stunning landscapes, charming villages, and pristine beaches.

From its elegant architecture to its lush parks and gardens, from its cultural events to its diverse cuisine, Opatija offers a multifaceted experience for travellers. Whether you're seeking relaxation by the sea, cultural enrichment, or outdoor adventures, Opatija has it all. So, if you're looking for a charming and refined coastal getaway on the Adriatic, Opatija may be your perfect destination.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Keeping kids entertained is a crucial component of any holiday when travelling with little ones. The area itself is ideal but the villa is designed more so for older children or smaller families. You may wish to look into some of the finer details of the property if you have younger children to ensure that it suits you, although your host will be more than happy to assist however they can.

The natural beauty surrounding you will capture the imaginations of all family members. You’ve got wild forests, bottomless blue seas and looming mountains. This truly is fairy-tale country. If your children are enduring fans of Game of Thrones, they’ll recognise the landscape intimately and be fired up by the possibilities.

The history of Croatia itself is equally captivating with the village of Ika known for its shipbuilding past. Children can get up close and personal with coastal life, understanding how the local fishing industry thrives and enjoying a meal at the end. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach and the sea, whether swimming, snorkelling or diving, and the water is mostly calm and gentle.

Depending on your children’s interests, you might wish to go for a hike, cycle, explore the botanical gardens or enjoy some water sports. Croatia is just as impressive by water as it is on land, and going out on a boat to explore this other world is a must. Horse-riding near Ucka mountain will bring treasured memories and there are striking islands dotted nearby including Krk, where you can find many bays for relaxation and swimming and a bar to perch at the evening, and Cres, which will lure you in with Venetian architecture and forests teaming with life. It’s a great spot for wildlife lovers.

The Opatija Riviera is a true sensation for families – beaches, restaurants, bars, it’s all here for you to enjoy. Whether you spend your evenings grilling and swimming at your villa or exploring the endless locations nearby, your holiday will be an unforgettable one. You can mix and match relaxation with adventure and your villa will be there to welcome you home.
