Up to 12 guests can enjoy the tranquility of western Croatia at Villa Umou. Situated 9km from Novigrad and 4km from Brtonigla, this beautifully appointed holiday home offers fine sea views and a tempting 8m x 4m private pool.
Beautifully verdant surroundings give the pool area even more appeal. There are loungers waiting for you poolside, and you have outdoor seating and dining areas along with a barbecue. The villa has a quiet location in the hamlet of Srbani, which is around 9km from the sea. Around 3km away, you have shops, restaurants and the popular water park, Aquapark Istralandia – an ideal day out if you’re bringing children.
Inside, the accommodation covers two levels. You have a comfy living room with satellite TV and access to a terrace with dining area. An attractive kitchen is just steps away, complete with coffee machine, dishwasher and all the other appliances you may need. There is also a chunky wooden dining table and eight chairs right here. You’ll have air conditioning and Wi-Fi at Villa Umou too.
This spacious house offers seven well-presented bedrooms. Two of these are found on the lower floor – both doubles – along with two shower rooms. On the upper floor, there are two more doubles, a twin room and two single rooms, allowing for 12 guests in total. Three more bathrooms, including two with a bathtub, are found on this floor.
Pretty Novigrad is a local highlight – a coastal town with colourful harbourside houses and many excellent restaurants which add to its reputation as a foodie hotspot. As well as Aqualand Istralandia, the fascinating caves of Špilja Mramornica are among the area’s nearby attractions.
There is plenty more to see within reasonable travelling distance, with glorious towns like Pula, Poreč and Rovinj lining the coast as you head south. You could also go east to beautiful Motovun, home of an annual film festival, or to the Učka Nature Park beyond. Meanwhile, Slovenia and Italy lie within a 30-60 minute drive to the north.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa UmouStill less well known than the likes of Rovinj and Pula to the south, Novigrad is found on the Istrian coast, about 18km north of Poreč. A pretty town with a highly rated food scene, you will enjoy its Old Town sights and charming waterfront.
The Old Town is surrounded by fortified walls dating from the 14th century, with its most recognisable building being the Church of St Pelagius and St Maximus. The 45m bell tower next to the church is easy to spot, and it’s worth having a look inside the main building which houses some interesting artworks. You will also find contemporary art at the nearby Lapidarium Museum.
Wander up from the harbour and you will come across numerous restaurant terraces, giving the town a very relaxed feel. Fresh seafood is a regular feature of menus around Novigrad, while the region produces excellent wine, with Istrian Malvasia considered one of the best. An annual food festival, Gnam-Gnam Fest showcases Novigrad’s foodie credentials.
Novigrad can offer you a relaxing day on the beach, and it’s close to other attractions that are good for days out. The Aquapark Istralandia water park is a big draw for families, and only a 10-minute drive away. Closer to Brtonigla, you can hike the forest trails that lead to the Mirna River canyon at the Skarline Nature Park.
North of Novigrad, the town of Umag is worth a look around, with nice beaches and some good restaurants and shops. Head north east and you will soon cross the border with Slovenia, where the salt pans of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park and stunning Piran are not too far away. Keep driving and it’s possible to reach the fringes of Italy too, with the city of Trieste around one hour’s drive from Novigrad.
To the south, the busier centres of the Istrian coast can be found. Poreč’s Roman Old Town and the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica are highlights of this town, along with the subterranean delights of Baredine Cave. A summer festival also brings music and entertainment to the streets. This area is good for families, with all sorts of wildlife, water and adventure parks in the vicinity.
On Istria’s eastern side, Učka Nature Park is ideal for outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking and hiking. Head up to its highest peak, Vojak, and you can really appreciate the natural beauty of the region. Further on, glamorous spa resort Opatija and the bustling port of Rijeka, gateway to Krk, give the north of the country plenty of life.

Region
This heart-shaped peninsula was the birthplace of modern Croatian tourism, and it’s easy to see why. Its history has bestowed it with Italian sophistication, most obviously seen in pastel-painted coastal towns, like romantic Rovinj. But, tear yourself away from the Istrian coast, through the vineyards, olive groves, and dense forests, and you will discover brilliantly preserved medieval towns and villages, where cobbled streets reveal quaint galleries, sweet squares and sea-views.

Best Suited For: All AgesIstria is full of exciting attractions where the kids can really get involved, many of them making the most of their spectacular settings. Croatia’s first water park lies conveniently close to Novigrad. Aqualand Istralandia has pools, slides and adrenaline-fuelled rides like Black Kamikaza and Space Rocket. And there’s more at Poreč’s Aquacolors, where the thrills continue on rides like Magicone, Turbolance and Windigo.
If caves are their thing, Špilja Mramornica lies just a few minutes’ drive from Novigrad, while Poreč’s spectacular Baredine Cave is also down the coast. Kids will love the guided tours around these fascinating caverns.
There are many more areas of natural beauty to discover in Istria. Look out for the Zarečki Krov Waterfall, near Pazin, which is surrounded by areas of forest – perfect for a relaxing day of walking. If you fancy a boat trip, you can set sail from Rovinj to the Brijuni National Park. The park consists of an archipelago of 14 islands and while you can only visit the largest, Veli Brijun, it’s a very enjoyable experience. Veli Brijun has a safari park, archaeological sites, and you can take a tour of the island’s best bits on a tourist train.
Head further south and you can check out the Kamenjak Nature Park, just outside Premantura. This beautiful area on Istria’s southern coast is ideal for walking or cycling, and has lovely beaches to discover. Young kids will love following the dinosaur nature trail and playing in the adventure playground. If you go this far, you won’t want to miss the city of Pula, about 15km north. You will find a stunning Roman amphitheatre, a huge aquarium and a fascinating 20th-century museum there, along with parks, underground tunnels and more.
Closer still, in Poreč, Motodrom is great for go-karting, while the adjacent Sky Fox park has obstacle courses and other energy-burning adventures. Dinopark Funtana, about 15 minutes’ drive south of Poreč, is sure to appeal to dinosaur lovers, with more than 80 life-size, moving models. There’s live entertainment, restaurants and a small zoo at this park too. Colourful bird park, Papago Park, is about 15 minutes’ drive north. The first park of its kind in Croatia, Papago Park cares for more than 200 birds, including parrots, peacocks and pheasants.

Perfect holiday - gladly again!
The house is beautiful and very tastefully furnished. The infinity pool and the distant view are a dream. The landlady C. is super nice and very concerned about the well-being of the guest. She gave us lots of tips for trips and shopping in the area. Everything great, can only be recommended! We'd love to come back.
