A mountainous island just off the Dalmatian Coast, Ugljan is perfect if you’re seeking beaches and beautiful areas of nature. The island’s main centres, such as Preko, Kuklijca and Ugljan village itself, line the eastern coast, while the western side is devoted to rugged countryside.

Serving a population of around 7,500, the small town of Prego is the island’s administrative centre. The pretty harbour is a highlight, while the hike up to St Michael’s Church will reward you with incredible views back to Zadar. To the south, the attractive fishing port at Kali and the sandy beaches of Kuklijca may also appeal. Zelena Punta and Kostanj are pleasant choices, while Jaz Beach, near Prego, is good for facilities.

Olive groves and vineyards add character to the island, while extends to 24km north to south and just 4km east to west. If you head for the tourism office in Preko, they will be able to provide details of extensive trekking and biking trails. Galleries, museums and a good selection of restaurants, particularly in Ugljan village, provide more options for trips out.

It’s only a 25-minute ferry ride back to Zadar on the Croatian mainland, with the Gaženica port about 3km from the centre of town. A beautiful and historic city, Zadar has several sights worth visiting. The Roman Forum, beside the Archbishop’s Palace and the Church of St Donat, is one such Old Town highlight – it’s one of the stops on walking tours which will teach you more about Zadar’s history.

Artefacts from Roman times can also be viewed at one of Zadar’s more recent additions – The Museum of Ancient Glass. Found in Cosmacendi Palace, the museum enjoys lovely views over Jazine Harbour. Be sure to experience the wonders of the unique Sea Organ, which uses wave power to play its tunes, and the Sun Salutation – a glorious art installation is the place to see the sun set. Both of these intriguing pieces are the creation of Croatian architect, Nikola Bašić.

Elsewhere, Zadar offers green space in the form of Vladimira Nazora Park, which sits between the Old Town and the city’s modern area. The adjacent Five Wells Square is a photogenic landmark situated close to the waterfront. From here, several cultural attractions are a short walk away, including a National Museum, the Croatian National Theatre and the impressive Cathedral of St Anastasia.

Region

The stunning islands of Ugljan and Pasman sweep along the North Dalmatia coastline just south of the bustling city of Zadar. With their lush natural beauty and warm hospitality, these islands are a captivating destination for those seeking a tranquil getaway.

Ugljan, often referred to as the "green island," is characterised by its ever-green Mediterranean vegetation, olive groves, and pine forests. Its historical significance dates back to ancient times, making it a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The main town on Ugljan, Preko is an utterly charming coastal village boasting a picturesque harbour and a lovely promenade. Take leisurely walks along the seafront, indulge in local cuisine at the waterfront restaurants, and immerse yourself in the town's welcoming atmosphere. A visit to St. Michael's Fort is a must! This well-preserved medieval fortress has sweeping panoramic views of
the island and its surrounding waters, making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts and great for a bit of historical exploration!

Ugljan boasts numerous beautiful beaches, each with its unique character. Sabusa Beach and Muline Beach are both popular choices for sunbathing and swimming, but there are numerous secluded spots to be discovered along the coastline.
Pasman, connected to Ugljan via Ždrelac Bridgebridge, is known for its pristine nature, crystal-clear waters, and a slower pace of life that means you can really switch off. Pasman is especially famous for its idyllic sandy beaches, as well as secluded natural bays - it’s a real slice of paradise, and still relatively untouched.

Tkon is the largest town on Pasman, and it's a delightful place to explore. Take a wander through the charming streets lined with stone houses, and visit the town’s Church of St. Thomas, a historic monument with more stunning views not to be missed. St. Damian’s Monastery is 12th-century Franciscan monastery, with beautiful gardens and a panoramic view from the bell tower. The monastery houses a museum featuring religious art and artefacts.

Some of the best coastal spots on Pasman include Crljina Beach, Suha Punta, and St. Damian's Bay. They’re often less busy than the beaches on the mainland, making them perfect for relaxing days soaking up the sea and sun. Ugljan and Pasman islands offer a fantastic base for a bit of island hopping. You can easily explore the neighbouring islands of Dugi Otok, Kornati, and Zverinac. Each one offers distinct experiences, ranging from national parks to secluded coves, allowing you to embark on your own unique voyage of discovery.

Immerse yourself in the local culture by attending traditional festivals and events that take place throughout the year on Ugljan and Pasman. These include seafood festivals, cultural exhibitions, and religious processions, providing a glimpse into the island's rich heritage and traditions.

Ugljan and Pasman are a captivating destination for travellers seeking a unique and off-the-beatenpath experience. With their stunning landscapes, traditional cuisine and outstanding hospitality, these islands offer a serene slice of paradise that will leave you in awe of their natural beauty.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The island of Ugljan is somewhere the kids can really relax. Don’t expect big theme parks, zoos and the like – this is a place to get back to nature and just chill. They will have plenty of beaches and secluded coves to uncover, as well as lengthy bike trails and scenic hikes. You can hire bikes in Preko and follow the coastal path to Kuklijca, or head out west to see the uninhabited parts of the island.

Other good alternatives for days out include boat trips around the Kornati Islands, south west of Ugljan, or the wonderful lakes and waterfalls of the forested Plitvice National Park – one of the best-loved attractions in the whole of Croatia.

Also back on the mainland, the city of Zadar has plenty to keep children entertained. They can hang out at Kolovare Beach, not far from the centre of town, where you will find crystal clear waters and areas of white sand and pebbles. The pretty Vladimira Nazora Park is a centrally located green oasis that’s ideal for a picnic, or you could go for a drink on the café terraces of People’s Square – a great spot for soaking up the vibe of busy Zadar.

If they’ve got the energy, they can climb the bell tower at the Cathedral of St Anastasia and admire the amazing views from the city’s highest viewpoint, or walk the City Walls – the oldest sections date back to Roman times. Younger children, meanwhile, will be very happy taking the little train which rides the streets of Zadar.

Two of the city’s best-known attractions are much more recent additions, and give Zadar something you won’t find anywhere else. Croatian architect Nikola Bašić’s Sun Saluation and Sea Organ are must-sees.

The Sun Salutation uses solar energy to power a spectacular light show, which illuminates the pavement using glass panels, while the Sea Organ creates tuneful, wave-generated tones in stone stairs which lead down to the ocean. These two inventive creations are located near each other, and just a short walk from the Old Town.

If they’re hungry for more, Zadar packs in everything from escape rooms and museums to movie theatres and puppet shows, while the wider area adds adventure parks, a donkey farm and mhch more besides.

  • It is worth it!

    on 24/05/2023

Everything was great, it was a very nice welcome from our hosts with an extra snack plate. There is also a cart to transport the suitcase.
The house is very spacious and the terraces are well extended. It's about a 5 minute walk to the village where you can eat very well. Pool and sea right in front of your nose, what more could you want :). You can't drive your car directly into the yard, you park about 20-30m away in the parking lot, I don't think it's bad.
