Not far from Stari Grad and the wonderful Stari Grad Plain, Vrbanj is a delightful village. In days gone by it served as a good shelter from pirates in the centre of the island with fortifications built in the 16th and 17th century. In the main square you will find Kraljev dvor, the King’s palace built in the middle ages. The parish church is famous, as is the most beautiful and authentic Dalmation Konoba owned by Miki Bratanic. Konobas are used for making and storing wine as well as other storage uses. Miki, a dialect poet, boasts a very good wine and excellent Prosek. You can visit the Konoba by calling ahead. The village enjoys a few cafes, shops and a post office as well as an excellent restaurant and a wine centre. Close by, you can also visit the villages of Pitve and Vrisnik where there are other authentic restaurants.

The Stari Grad Plain is also known as Ager and Hora and has UNESCO World Heritage Status. It is beautiful and best explored by bicycle. Visitors enjoy the scent of the magnificent lavender fields, the beautiful countryside landscapes and the island’s quaint, charming villages. Lovers of the outdoors enjoy hiking. The peak of St Nicholas, the highest on the island, offers amazing panoramic views of the surrounding villages and islands. If you are heading towards Jelsa, you will reach the charming wine village of Svrice. It is worth a stop and if you are heading for Stari Grad, you should stop at the picturesque village of Dol.

Jelsa is the main tourist center on the north shore of Hvar. It boasts a fragrant dense pine forest, wonderful sandy beaches, numerous vineyards, historic cultural landmarks and good range of shops and gourmet restaurants. Vitarnja Beach is a delightful, beautiful cove near Jelsa. It is a great place for families with thrilling treats.

Ancient Greek colonists founded Stari Grad in 384BC and named it Pharos. Throughout the town you will find remains of its glorious past. Connecting Stari Grad and Rudina is saffron spice. Together with honey it is a main ingredient in making the delicious delicacy Paprenjak, a biscuit that became the symbol of Rudina. Stari Grad is very beautiful with a maze of picturesque narrow streets, the magical sounds of folk singers, galleries, charming courtyards, excellent shops and traditional taverns. The town sits proudly at the end of a deep inlet. The waterfront promenade continues along the northern bank to a small beach. The surrounding fields are still divided into parcels of land.

Hvar has gained a reputation as one of Croatia’s trendiest destinations with the town of Hvar being the beating heart of the island and a celebrity hot-spot. Visitors flock to the town in the summer, visiting the beaches by day and partying into the night. The harbour is sensational. The town enjoys many historic buildings including its wonderful medieval castle above the town, its 15th century monastery and its baroque cathedral. There are some lovely unique shops where you can buy souvenirs.

Region

The island of Hvar stands out as one of Croatia's most enchanting destinations - a picturesque paradise that seamlessly combines natural beauty, historical charm and a lively cultural scene. The sun-drenched island’s stunning landscapes provide a picture-perfect backdrop to a whole wealth of
unforgettable experiences.

At the heart of the island is the port town of Hvar, a historic gem known for its well-preserved architecture and timeless allure. Take a wander through the traffic-free labyrinth of narrow streets, where you can soak up the charm of the island. The central square of Hvar Town is a bustling hub surrounded by centuries-old buildings and lively cafes - it’s a popular spot to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from one of the many cafes and restaurants. The square is also home to the imposing St. Stephen's Cathedral, a beautiful example of Dalmatian Renaissance architecture.

Overlooking the town is the Hvar Fortress, a medieval citadel with a history dating back to the 13th century. The fortress is worthy of a visit for the epic panoramic views that stretch across the town and the Adriatic Sea. The ascent is especially rewarding it at sunset, when you can watch the town's
lights sparkle below.

Heading inland just a few kilometres from Hvar Town, the village of Velo Grablje is famous for its lavender fields. Visit during the summer and you'll be treated to the sight and scent of the vast fields in full bloom. The island is also celebrated for its vineyards and olive groves, producing some of Croatia's best wines and olive oils. Many wineries and oil mills offer tastings and tours, allowing
you to sample these local delights while learning about traditional production methods.

Just a short boat ride from the harbour of Hvar are the Pakleni Islands, a group of islets renowned for their pristine beaches, hidden coves, and emerald sea. The idyllic surroundings offer a tranquil escape from the bustle of the main island, making it a favoured day trip destination. Explore hidden
bays, discover secluded beaches, and enjoy water sports in this unspoiled paradise. The uninhabited resort of Palmižana on the island of Sveti Clement is a particular highlight - a hidden oasis known for its lush botanical gardens and crystal-clear water.

For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Hvar's natural beauty provides a picturesque playground. Hvar offers numerous cycling trails for both beginners and experienced riders. The island's diverse terrain is ideal for exploring the charming villages, olive groves, and vineyards on two wheels. Or for a unique perspective of the islands scenic beauty, you can experience the Adriatic up close and paddle along the dramatic coastline in a kayak, discovering coves and sea caves.

Hvar, is a Mediterranean paradise that promises an array of unforgettable experiences. Whether you're wandering through the historic streets of Hvar Town, discovering hidden coves on the Pakleni Islands, or savouring local wines and delicacies, the island offers a blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and relaxation that's hard to match.

The island has some incredible beaches including Mekiceva Beach. It is a protected cove with dramatic rock formations and small pebbles. It is quieter than some beaches and you might want to wear water shoes but it is a lovely day out. Dubovica is another lovely beach with a wonderful restaurant for lunch. Mlini is always popular with families.

Cycling on the Stari Grad plain is wonderful. There is a sailing school in Stari Grad during August which is very popular. Just above Gromin Dolac, the Grapceva cave, Humac, is full of stalactites and stalagmites, a wonderful excursion with children. Ancient relics from 4 BC were discovered in the cave, making it the most significant prehistoric site in the Adriatic. Slightly inland, Gariful Organic Farm is great fun and boasts many animals and horse riding.
