With its own private pool, the attractive Villa Alyssa provides a restful break on Brač’s southern coast. Suitable for up to eight guests, this 3-bedroom villa is situated in the small town of Sumartin, about 30 minutes’ drive from Bol and the wonderful Zlatni Rat beach.

Villa Alyssa offers a modern terrace which wraps around the house. As well as the heated pool, you can enjoy a barbecue and outdoor dining area with a lovely view down to the town, sun loungers and an outdoor shower. You will only be 300m away from the sea and local restaurants too.

Inside, the house has a sleek kitchen and dining area just the other side of the patio doors. This comfortable room has subtle décor and all the appliances you could need, with a fridge, dishwasher, microwave and coffee maker among them. There is also a plush seating area in the same open-plan space.

Go up one floor and you have two of the three bedrooms, each with a terrace and double bed. On the next floor, the master bedroom gives you even more space and enjoys fine views from its own terrace. This room also has an extra sofa-bed which can accommodate two guests if required. The house is fully air-conditioned and has parking for two vehicles.

Quiet Sumartin has some pleasant cafés and restaurants to discover and offers ferry connections back to Makarska on the Croatian mainland. Besides Sumartin, the island of Brač has lots more to see within easy travelling distance. Try climbing its high peak, Vidova Gora, for the best views in the area, surfing at magnificent Zlatni Rat, or visit the popular towns of Bol or Supetar.

The large island of Brač is perhaps most famous for its beautiful white stone - it was used in the construction of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, just across the water, and even the White House in Washington. This isn’t its only claim to fame, however, and there is plenty to see and do around the island.

Brač impresses with its wonderful scenery, and you can get the best views from Vidova Gora, the highest peak on all the Adriatic islands. Reaching 778m, you’ll find it north of Bol on the southern coast. Bol is the island’s main tourism spot, and quite an upmarket one. Near Bol lies the reason for many people’s visit, the gorgeous Zlatni Rat beach which extends eye-catchingly into the Adriatic. A promenade connects this ever-busy beach with Bol town, and is a pleasing place to take a stroll.

On Brač’s northern coast is its largest town, Supetar. More understated than Bol, the town nonetheless has plenty to stop for, with its pretty harbour and medieval streets giving it a relaxed charm. There are good places to eat and cultural treats as well – look out for the National Library, which includes the Ivan Rendić Gallery.

There are always boat cruises and catamaran trips to be had on Brač, making it easy to reach other islands like Hvar and Šolta, or to get to the mainland. To visit Šolta, you can take a catamaran from Milna to Rogač. On arrival, the award-winning destination of Maslinica – with its beautiful pine woods and secluded, rocky beaches – is well worth seeking out. It only takes about 20 minutes to get to Šolta; Hvar is around one hour away.

There’s a lot to see in Croatia’s second city, Split, accessible via ferry crossing from Supetar. As well as the huge Diocletian’s Palace complex, there’s the Split Gallery of Fine Arts, Meštrović Gallery and the glorious Marjan Forest Park. Also, don’t miss the chic café society of the Riva waterfront.

Sumartin offers crossings to Makarska too. Another upscale resort, it’s a good choice for nightlife, dining and entertainment. Those looking for outdoor challenges also flock to the Biokovo Mountains – perfect for climbing and hiking.

Wondering where to take the kids? Brač is packed with stunning beaches. The most famous of them all is Zlatni Rat, the poster beach for Croatian tourism, which has been called one of the most beautiful in Europe. It stretches out over 600m which looks amazing from above – if you head to the peak of nearby Vidova Gora, you can see for yourself.

Wander into the nearby town of Bol and you can enjoy the harbour area with its many café terraces. There’s also an inflatable water park sitting on the sea which the youngest will have fun with. The Cave of the Dragon, just west of Bol, is an interesting sight for older kids. Inside the cave are lots of carvings and symbols thought to date back to the 15th century.

Alternatively, how about a boat trip? It’s a great way to see this beautiful island, and others. The lovely Šolta is a relaxing choice, and only a 20-minute boat ride from Milna on the western side of the island. Another notable sight is the Blue Cave – this sea grotto is a major attraction and jumping off for a swim in the stunning cave is the experience everyone wants.

For an easy day out on the island, there are lots of attractions related to local life, such as wineries, a stonemasonry school and an olive oil museum, where you can not only learn about the production process but enjoy a lovely lunch in the restaurant. The Olive Oil Museum is located in Škrip, about 15 minutes’ drive from Supetar.

You might like to visit that town too, as there are lots of beaches and a charming Old Town. For something to stir their imaginations, check out the art treasures of Supetar’s Cathedral of the Annunciation, or the artefacts of Škrip’s open-air Archaeological Museum. Wildlife lovers might like to visit Sutivan’s nature park – it has a zoo, botanical gardens and playground.

A ferry trip to Split should be on your list too – this attraction-packed city is great for families. Diocletian’s Palace is the big hitter, but there’s also Znjan Beach, Marjan Hill and the Froggyland museum waiting for you. And if they’re into pirates, be sure to head down the coast to Omiš, Croatia’s undisputed home of swashbuckling adventures.
