Location
About the surrounding area of Casa MilnaA wonderfully scenic island just off Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, Brač is a real discovery. You can easily make the crossing from Split or Makarska, or from other islands like Hvar, Korčula or nearby Šolta.
On the western coast, Milna is about 20km from the largest town on the island, Supetar. A quiet place with a pretty harbour, Milna has a number of pebble beaches within walking distance of the town – beautiful, secluded spots shaded by pine trees. It’s just as pleasurable to amble along the waterside or spend some time dining at one of Milna’s restaurants.
Brač’s other sights are well within reach – the popular resort of Bol is just under an hour’s drive away, and it’s here that you’ll find Croatia’s picture-perfect beach, Zlatni Rat. Otherwise known as the ‘Golden Horn’, the stunning views and near-endless sands have contributed to this beach’s reputation as one of the finest in Europe. The way the beach extends into the sea is much photographed – it’s definitely one not to miss.
Just north of Bol, you’ll find another notable landmark. At 778m high, the peak of Vidova Gora is the highest in the Dalmatian islands and well worth a climb if you’re looking for the best views of the region. The landscapes of pine woods, vineyards and pretty bays lend the area plenty of charm – take a boat trip from Milna to the lovely island of Šolta and you’ll find lots to admire. Many visitors also pop across from Split, as it’s not too far away. The pretty villages of Rogač, Grohote and Maslinica are all charming, while Stomorska is the largest with the biggest choice of restaurants.
Back on Brač, make a visit to Supetar on the northern coast. Less developed as a tourist destination than Bol in the south, it offers plenty of places to eat and shop, and acts as a ferry port. One attraction of note is the Olive Oil Museum in Skrip, about 15 minutes’ drive from the town. At this welcoming museum you can find out about the production process and enjoy some delicious food too.
If you cross to the mainland, Split has no shortage of things to see and do. As well as the huge Diocletian’s Palace, don’t miss the glorious Riva waterfront or the views from the top of Marjan Hill. With numerous galleries and museums, Split is a great place for enjoying Croatian culture, while its countless stunning heritage buildings and public squares are sure to enchant you.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThe kids can enjoy a chilled-out break on Brač, an island with beautiful beaches and peaceful countryside. And while it’s a little quieter than some of its neighbours, it’s just a boat ride away from all the attractions of mainland gems like Split and Omiš that are made for family fun.
First up, don’t miss Zlatni Rat beach, said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. This eye-catching beach in Bol stretches out over 600m into the sea, and kids will love playing on the sand or at the Aquapark. A lovely promenade connects Zlatni Rat to the town of Bol, where there is a pretty harbour area and lots of cafés and restaurants. To get a photo of the beach from above, you could climb Vidova Gora, the highest peak for miles around.
If they fancy a boat trip, there are lots of possibilities. Head to upmarket Hvar, the ever-popular Korčula, or discover the delights of Šolta’s pretty villages. You could also visit the super-impressive Blue Cave, or blue sea grotto, which is the big attraction on the island of Biševo.
On Brač, look out for the Olive Oil Museum in Skrip, about 15 minutes’ drive from Dračevica and Supetar, and the village’s open-air Archaeological Museum. Near Sutivan, children are very welcome at the Sutivan Nature Park. As well as a small zoo, there are playgrounds and sports facilities including a couple of zip-lines. An intriguing alternative for a day out can be found at The Cave of the Dragon. Book a tour to see the mysterious carvings inside this cave near Bol.
It's well worth crossing back to the mainland and spending some time in Split. This city is especially good for kids as it’s packed with all sorts of family attractions. Look out for the big aquarium, an exciting semi-submarine for views of the creatures of the deep, and a big indoor play centre at Poljud Stadium. Froggyland is an unforgettable frog-based museum, while Znjan Beach, with paddle boats, trampolines and bouncy castles, is another family favourite.
Just down the coast, Omiš is pirate central and a water sports hub – so there’s sure to be an adventure you can all enjoy together.
