A highlight of the Dalmatian Coast, Omiš is dramatic in many ways. Nowadays, its spectacularly rugged scenery sees visitors taking part in all kinds of thrilling activities, but it was once the home of pirates who ruled the waves of the Adriatic. You can get a taste of all these adventures during your stay, as well as discovering other elements of the town’s eventful history.

Backed by the craggy Dinara mountains, the picturesque Old Town of Omiš is just a short walk from the River Cetina on which much of the exhilarating sporting activity is centred. You will also find many excellent restaurants and charming cafés which warmly welcome visitors to their sunny terraces.

The town hosts various cultural events throughout the year, such as the summer’s Festival of Dalmatian Klapas, which brings this traditional form of Croatian music to the streets. Hearing the gentle harmonies of this unique style of singing reverberating around St Michael’s Square is not to be missed.

Omiš is also notable for its imposing fortresses, which offer wonderful views over the area – so long as you can handle the steep climbs necessary to reach them. The Mirabella fortress dates from the 13th century, while Starigrad is a more recent addition from the 15th century. The site of the Mila Gojsalič statue, around 5km from the centre of Omiš, is another landmark worth seeking out. Not only is the bronze statue (by famed Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović) impressive, it offers similarly amazing views to the fortresses.

Stories of Omiš’ infamous pirates have inspired all sorts of attractions and events. In summer, the town hosts weekly Pirate Night tours and a Pirate Weekend. Children will enjoy these, and also the sandy beach of Velika Plaza, which is close to the town.

The River Cetina is the centrepiece of Omiš, and it’s where a lot of the action happens. Choose your favourite activity from an extensive list that includes zip-lining, canyoning, rafting, canoeing and paragliding. The mountainous surroundings are also great for hiking, cycling and climbing, or you can take to the sea and cross to the beautiful nearby islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta – each one is a gem, so be sure not to miss them.

Omiš is within a 35-minute drive of Croatia’s second city, Split. With the Cathedral of St Domnius, Diocletian’s Palace and many more beautiful buildings, it rivals Dubrovnik when it comes to historic sights. The Split Gallery of Fine Arts, the Archaeological Museum and the Meštrović Gallery give it cultural cred, while the green spaces of Marjan Forest Park and the region’s largest aquarium offer a chance to experience nature while in town.

Region

The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.

The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.

One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.

Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.

The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.

The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.

The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The kids will find so much to enjoy at Villa Tanja and all around Omiš. The villa has a stylish sun deck with poolside loungers, cool areas to relax and a magnificent hot tub – and that’s before they even get inside. The media room makes a great den to retreat to for a movie or to play on the PS4, and Villa Tanja is, of course, equipped with TV and Wi-Fi too.

Head into Omiš and you can enjoy some unforgettable adventures together. The Cetina Canyon is a ready-made playground for all ages, with rafting, canoeing, scuba-diving and all sorts of exciting activities on offer. Look out for the zip-lines which cross the canyon – you can experience it from 150m above ground as you whizz across the eight wires. Children who are aged 7 or above can join in, so why not share the thrill?

There are some great family beaches around Omiš. The most obvious, and closest, choice is Velika Plaza. A 700m stretch of sand with lots of useful facilities, this big beach also offers volleyball, snorkelling, jet-skiing, football and more. A pretty pebble beach, Brzet, is only about 15 minutes’ walk from Omiš and offers crystal-clear waters, pine trees and mountain views – ideal if you would like to find somewhere a little quieter.

There are many family-friendly restaurants you can try – whatever their taste, it’s sure to be on a menu somewhere in Omiš. You will find pizzerias, Mexican food, grilled meats, vegetarian dishes… you name it. The Flintstones-themed restaurant, Kremenko, is fun for kids – and it’s up in the mountains, which adds to the adventure.

If they develop a head for heights, you might even be able to persuade them to make the trek up to one of Omiš’ famous fortresses. It may take a while to reach Starigrad or Mirabella, but the views down over the area are glorious and will more than reward their efforts.

Outside Omiš, there is yet more to explore. Take them horse riding, one of the highlights of the town of Sinj, an equestrian hub just under an hour north. Elsewhere, there are the impressive historic sights of Trogir to discover, or the International Children’s Festival hosted each summer in Šibenik.

Closer yet than any of these is the wonderful city of Split – definitely a must-visit if you’re travelling with children. There is so much to see and do here, with highlights including Diocletian’s Palace, the aquarium and a semi-submarine that offers all the benefits of scuba-diving without getting wet.

Super villa, Description is exactly like the villa. We had a luxurious stay, near the beach (15meters), and near the city center of Omis (10 minutes by car). The pool is great and the jacuzzi water is changed every 2 days by the host, early in the morning. The air conditioning is independant in each room and in living room. The hosts and all their little attentions are really appreciated, and the stay is very pleasant.
