Location
About the surrounding area of Villa TaitusA small harbour town on the Dalmatian Coast, Omiš sits at the mouth of the Cetina River. It has a long and rich history, with stories of the town’s notorious pirates running amok in the Middle Ages among those you are bound to discover. In the 13th and 14th century, they were the most-feared in the Adriatic, and used the river to make a quick getaway after attacking passing trade ships. In summer, Pirate Night tours are a popular attraction, telling tales of the pirates in a more family-friendly way.
Omiš is a pleasant place to spend your time with lovely beaches and a wealth of great restaurants and cafés. It’s visually impressive, with steep cliffs providing a backdrop to the Old Town, where you can find a Franciscan monastery and several old churches, in addition to the Mirabella fortress, dating from the 13th century. At the top of the mountain, there is also the Starigrad fortress – it’s quite a climb, but a rewarding one.
Olive groves and vineyards lend their magic to the beautiful areas which surround the town, and the Cetina gives you the opportunity to try out water-sports like rafting, canyoning and canoeing.
Omiš is something of a cultural hub too. The town hosts festivals celebrating music and theatre on a regular basis, with an annual highlight being the Festival of Dalmatian Klapas each summer. Split is also easily accessible from Omiš, around 25km away, so it’s easy to take a bus or mini-van to see the Diocletian Palace, the Cathedral of St Domnius or the town’s strangely unmissable frog museum.

Region
The Dalmatian coast is a veritable treasure trove of stunning landscapes and historic towns, and Omis, situated halfway between the famous port city of Split and the energetic town of Maksarka, is no exception. With its rich history, scenic backdrop, and a plethora of attractions, Omis stands out as a unique and captivating destination for those seeking to explore the charm of Croatia. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its dramatic geographical setting, which is dominated by the imposing Cetina River Canyon and the Mosor Mountain Range.
The old town of Omis, with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses, is a place where history and culture converge. It’s a charming place to explore on foot and soak up the local way of life. There are a number of historic churches that you’ll come across while exploring - the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Peter, and the Church of St. Rocco, which all showcase intricate architectural details and a sense of reverence. The old town is also home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and local shops, it’s an excellent spot to savour authentic Croatian dishes and find unique souvenirs.
One of the most prominent historical attractions in the town is the Mirabella Fortress, often called Peovica. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, this fortress was built during the 13th century and was used as a hideout by the notorious Omis pirates who terrorised the Adriatic Sea. Today, visitors can climb up the steep path to the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the town, the coast, and the surrounding landscapes.
Omis boasts a pristine stretch of coastline with a variety of beaches, each catering to different tastes. One of the most popular is the sandy beach at the mouth of the Cetina River, offering calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Adventurous spirits may prefer the pebbly beach of Brzet, known for its perfect conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Just a short drive from Omis, there's the small village of Stanici, which is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's a serene place to relax and escape the crowds often found in more touristy locations.
The Cetina River is a defining feature of Omis, and one of the most exhilarating activities here is to take a rafting excursion along its emerald waters. The river cuts through the impressive Cetina Canyon, creating a thrilling white-water rafting experience that appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The journey offers panoramic views of the rugged cliffs, lush forests, and the charming villages that dot the landscape.
The nearby Biokovo Nature Park is an outstanding natural attraction. The Biokovo Mountain Range, part of the Dinaric Alps, offers incredible hiking opportunities, with well-marked trails leading to panoramic viewpoints where you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea and the islands scattered along the coast. The juxtaposition of the rugged mountain terrain and the azure waters is simply stunning and will leave a lasting impression.
The history, natural beauty, and cultural vitality of Omis combine to create a destination that is rich in character and charm. Whether you're seeking adventure on the Cetina River, exploring the medieval fortresses, or simply savouring the local cuisine, Omis has something to offer every traveller who ventures to this utterly enchanting corner of the Dalmatian coast.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere’s a lot for the children to love at Villa Taitus, from the pool to the outdoor playground and even a sauna if they fancy one. The house is equipped with satellite TV and Wi-Fi, plus there’s a pool table and a gym too.
All this is just a short drive from loads of beaches, and all the fun to be had in Omiš – rafting tours down the river are great for all ages, and younger ones will love all the pirate-themed adventures. Down the coast in Split, there’s everything from an aquarium to a frog museum and a semi-submerged submarine – and if you head a bit further in the direction of Šibenik, the Dalmatia Aquapark is the place to slide and splash right by the sea.

Absolutely wonderful
We have just returned from a 12 night stay at this beautiful villa and none of us wanted to leave. The villa is perfect - modern, clean, very well equipped and peaceful. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. A car is an essential but it is only a short drive from the nearest town and some beautiful beaches. The area felt quite secluded but this meant it was very quiet and we didn’t feel isolated as the restaurants, shops and beaches of Omis were easily accessible by car. The pool was clean and heated. The owner Marko was very welcoming and friendly, as were his family members that we met at different occasions over the time we stayed. He responded to any queries I had quickly. We were welcomed on arrival by his sister and cousin with a spread of food and wine and Marko made the effort to come and welcome us later that day and also early on a Sunday when we left. We would really struggle to fault it! Thank you Marko and Oliver’s Travels for such a lovely family holiday!

Home from home
We had an amazing week at Villa Taitus. It’s a beautiful home from home in a peaceful area, yet 10 minutes drive from the town of Omis. Our host, Marko, was so friendly, helpful and accommodating, providing recommendations locally and answering any queries swiftly and efficiently. Marko greeted us on arrival with a beautiful spread of fresh local food, and wine made by his lovely father. During the week we were left a basket of fruit grown in his grandmother’s garden.
The villa was perfect- clean, spacious, family friendly and comfortable with all mod cons. Definitely recommend and planning to return to explore more of beautiful Croatia. Thank you Marko!
