About Barbados

At first glance you could be mistaken for thinking that Barbados is purely a beach holiday destination, but you're urged to reconsider this common belief.     Sugar Hill is 5 mins by car from Holetown and the beautiful beach at the Royal Fairmount Hotel for which we had beach cards. The Sugar Hill Estate is beautifully kept with 2 pools and a marvellous Restaurant. Very quiet and peaceful.

    The highlights of this property must be the terrace and it's lovely view of the grounds - and the main pool at reception. The pool even makes the pool at the Fairmont look very average. It also helped that the sun was shining from dawn until dusk!

    The staff we great. Maggie (the housekeeper) in particular was very nice and helpful. If it wasn't for Maggie we wouldn't have been made aware of the short cut (15-20 minutes) to the beach on foot. Adrian had recommended us to hire a car, but on the map it looked much closer to get to the beach. In the heat it's a tough walk though - very steep and it put us off walking on a few occasions.

    We also didn't expect the closet shopping centre to be so far away. Again, but car, it wouldn't be a problem. Even the closet bus stop is 20 minutes away.

    On the second day we asked reception about a driver, and not knowing the area we had no idea what to expect. Before we had chance to agree, a driver called Grantley arrived and charged us $50 BDS just to take us five minutes drive away to shop. Grantley as friendly, but $50 was very high and we felt we'd been taken advantage of at the time. Especially with reception setting it up.

    Finally, if you're going to Barbados make sure you take into account FOOD. That is eating out, and buying in shopping. Being an Island, there was always going to be expensive imported food. However, with prices like $15 for Marmite, $9 for Pringles, $5 for a 500ml bottle of Waitress water, and $25 for a box of cereal put a dent in out shopping budget. Add the $50 to get there... it was an expensive trip.

    Sasha, the property manager, was helpful when we needed a few items picking up. Very polite too. Just one thing, there is a 10% surcharge for picking up items - and that is even charged if they forward the order to the supermarket who then add another $10 delivery charge. So, you pay $10 on the entire bill.

    All this said, just be prepared. The Sugar Hill resort was very impressive. Really polite people. Tthe owner was brilliant from day one, making sure we had no questions that needed answering. Amazing pool!!! A cool restaurant with very friendly staff. Even with the above, we would highly recommend staying here.

    We were very pleased with our stay at this west coast condominium. Part of the Sugar Hill development, check in and check out is very straightforward and managed by the staffed front desk at Sugar Hill. Sugar Hill has an ideal location just up the hill from Holetown, which has a large modern grocery store, shopping, restaurants and nightlife, and which is in a good central location for day trips to explore the island. The condo itself is very well appointed with a fully stocked kitchen, comfortable bed, furnished veranda (including table, couch and sun loungers), and many other thoughtful touches. We alternated between sitting by the pool (just a few steps away from the unit but not a noisy or rowdy pool) and lounging on the veranda. We rented car and appreciated the mobility it gave us to explore the island. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.
