With a coastline encompassing serene bays, lush green headlands, coral reefs and blue lagoons, the island of Antigua offers families and couples alike the chance to explore the wonders of the ocean whilst soaking up the Caribbean sunshine! The nation of Antigua and Barbuda is made up of two sister islands and several smaller islets, all situated where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. At just 281 km², Antigua holds the title of the nation’s largest island. However, it remains a tiny, untouched corner of paradise - the perfect size for a relaxed Caribbean getaway.

The island’s 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, are a source of great pride for local Antiguans. The fantastic location of Tamarind Hills on the island’s south-west coastline means you will have the fine white sands of two idyllic beaches, Ffryes and Darkwood, right on your doorstep. Surrounded by luscious green hilltops, Ffryes Beach is a popular spot with tourists and locals alike. You can spend the morning snorkeling in the turquoise waters here, before indulging in a long lunch at one of the local restaurants around Jolly Harbour. Darkwood Beach is known for being one of the most picturesque places on the entire island, so bring your camera for a leisurely stroll at sunset.

A trip to Nelson’s Dockyard National Park makes for an exciting day out. This UNESCO World Heritage site features an eighteenth-century British naval dockyard at its centre. As well as being a site of great historical significance, this is also a popular venue for the island’s maritime events. Every year, Antigua Sailing Week attracts hundreds of yachts and thousands of spectators to the dockyard. For those who wish to experience the magic for themselves, there are plenty of sailing excursions and water-based activities available.

The island also offers visitors some fantastic trekking trails, taking in sandy beaches, lush forests and dreamlike coastal views. For a challenging hike, wear comfortable walking gear and visit Mount Obama, the highest peak in Antigua. From the summit, enjoy the panoramic views, before descending to Cades Bay for a delightfully refreshing dip in the ocean.

Another popular destination is Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout known for its bewitching sunsets. Shirley Heights is famous for its community feel, with a popular street party happening every Sunday afternoon. Here, visitors are welcome to enjoy the music of live Caribbean steel drum bands, taste some of the local food and rum punch and take in the breathtaking sights as the sun begins to go down on the island.

Antigua’s amazing landscape and sparkling coastline make it a treasure trove of family adventures! Away from the home comforts of Tamarind Hills and swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the pristine local beaches nearby, the island offers plenty of exciting activities that will be sure to keep the whole family entertained.

Watersports are widely available throughout Antigua, with sea kayaking and kitesurfing among the most popular. On land, horse riding enthusiasts can arrange a visit to a local riding club. Horseback tours can be booked to suit a range of abilities, taking in beautiful valleys and sandy beaches.

The hiking and trekking trails of Nelson’s Dockyard are another great way to get closer to nature. Ascend to the stunning panoramic views of Shirley Heights on a quiet weekday afternoon, for a scenic hike that everyone will remember. This is a relatively easy hike but do make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack plenty of water. There are handy downloadable trail maps available online.

Head out for a coastal drive and within twenty minutes you will reach the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Park, where a thrilling day of rainforest adventure awaits! With experienced instructors to guide you at every point along the way, you will cross suspension bridges and rope obstacles, ziplining above the tree-tops and crisscrossing a stunning gorge. Don’t forget to take a break in the magical twin tree houses tucked away in the dense rainforest. This is an exhilarating day out that varies in intensity, with a range of fun and friendly eco-activities available and options to suit all age groups.

The Antiguan capital of St. John’s will delight younger visitors with its vibrant colours and sounds. Here, the whole family can visit any of the local restaurants to sample some of the island’s delicacies. For an introduction to a truly important facet of Antiguan culture, why not take everyone to watch a local cricket match? The island is fiercely devoted to its national sport, which is played everywhere, though official matches tend to take place on weekends.

In the evening, head back to Ffryes Beach for a relaxing sunset swim and a delicious dinner together, before you make your way up to the suites for a night of stargazing on the terrace.
