Location
About the surrounding area of Whitby TownhouseWhitby Townhouse enjoys a prime central position in Whitby, a town that offers something more than your typical coastal seaside resort. Whitby is famous for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Captain Cook and boasts a Gothic culture. Its charming, quirky, narrow cobbled streets are brimming with independent shops and numerous eateries and pubs. The majestic ruins of Whitby Abbey overlook the town. There is a monument to Captain James Cook up on West Cliff where he is looking out to sea. You can also visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and learn more about his life and time in Whitby.
You should definitely expect to encounter a hill or two in Whitby, not to mention the 199 steps to the abbey and St Mary’s Church. There are plenty of excellent restaurants including the famous Magpie Cafe where you will frequently see queues outside. This renowned quirky restaurant enjoys numerous levels and offers many seafood dishes as well as the delicious, traditional fish and chips.
Visitors enjoy classic seaside fun with crabbing, sandcastle building and walks along the pier, not to mention the amusement arcades. Just along from the main town and harbour you will discover the lovely sandy beaches of Sandsend and Runswick Bay. Sandsend was originally two villages, Sandsend and East Row. There are several delightful cafes for cups of tea and lunches.
The picturesque old fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay is just six miles south of Whitby . It is very attractive and definitely Instagram worthy with a sandy beach, rock pools, ancient fossils, narrow twisting cobbled streets and alleyways. You can easily imagine the fishermen and smugglers walking the streets hundreds of years ago. It is quite easy to get lost in the little warren of lanes lined with old fisherman’s cottages. Most have now been renovated. The village enjoys a good range of cafes, pubs and restaurants as well as charming, unique shops.
Staithes is also a picture postcard unmissable village, clinging to the hillside and boasting winding cobbled streets, 18th century cottages and characterful pubs. This fabulous coastal village was once one the largest fishing ports in the North East but now it is a wonderful hillside gem perfect for exploring Yorkshire’s cliff top paths and the rock pools on the small sandy beach.
There are many stunning coastal and country walks, cycle paths and 800km of bridleways close to Whitby. You will be amazed at the peaceful and tranquil countryside of the North York Moors National Park.

Best Suited For: All AgesWhitby Townhouse is perfect for a family holiday. It is very spacious and very comfortable. It offers smart televisions in every bedroom and a small courtyard for outside space. You can visit several beaches easily with Sandsend being a popular choice. There are ice-creams galore and great fun to be had on the beach. If you enjoy the waves, you may want to take a course with Whitby Surf School which is located on the promenade of West Cliff Beach. You can learn to surf or stand-up paddleboard with fully qualified instructors or else you can just hire the boards and kayaks.
Whitby is family friendly with amusement arcades, Doodlepots Ceramic Cafe, Pannett Park with its maritime themed play area and Jurassic Gardens and various museums. The Whitby Museum has numerous collections and a chance to find out about Captain Cook though you can also visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Whitby’s Dracula Experience offers an entertaining tour explaining Dracula’s connection to Whitby though it might scare the really young ones!
The Whitby Whale Watching Centre offers boat trips to watch for minke, sperm, humpback and northern whales as well as porpoises, bottle-nosed dolphins, jellyfish and sharks. Every year the summer and autumn shoals of herring migrate to the coast off Yorkshire bringing with them huge numbers of sharks, seals, dolphins and whales. The boat trips last for 4 hours.
You can also take a trip on board Bark Endeavour which is an authentic replica of Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour created to a 40% scale. You will enjoy wonderful views of the Jurassic coastline and hopefully see seals, sea birds, dolphins, porpoises and whales.
