Location
About the surrounding area of The Pig CottageThe Pig Cottage is located in Whitby, not far from the sandy beaches, iconic pier, and bustling amusement arcades. Set away from the busier tourist spots, the cottage itself offers peace and quiet, with plenty of space for a group of six guests to rest, relax and enjoy quality time together. Whether you are after a quiet holiday reading books and playing games, or an adventure of countryside walking and seaside escapades, this cottage offers it all.
There is of course more to Whitby than meets the eye with its fascinating history! Known for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Captain Cook, there are endless stories and histories to explore. Quirky narrow cobbled streets, independent shops and the majestic ruins of Whitby Abbey overlooking the town all speak to the old Gothic culture. We would recommend the Captain James Cook memorial which sits on West Cliff where he is looking out to sea and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum where you can learn all about his fascinating life and time in Whitby.
Whitby is hilly, so we recommend some comfortable walking shoes! There are 199 steps up to the abbey and St Mary’s Church. Dotted around the winding, hilly streets, Whitby plays host to a delicious array of restaurants including the famous Magpie Cafe. The Magpie Cafe is quirky with numerous levels and offers many seafood dishes as well as the traditional fish and chips. For some more traditional seaside fun, there is crabbing, sandcastle building, walks along the pier and plenty of amusement arcades to enjoy. Just along from the main town and harbour you will find the lovely sandy beaches of Sandsend and Runswick Bay.
Just six miles south of Whitby and a short drive away from the cottage, you will find the picturesque old fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay. It is beautiful with a sandy beach, rock pools, ancient fossils, narrow, twisting, cobbled streets and lots of alleyways. It is easy to imagine the fishermen and smugglers walking the streets hundreds of years ago. It is quite easy to get lost in the little warren of lanes lined with old fisherman’s cottages, most of which have now been renovated. The village is bustling with a good range of cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Again, the hill into the village is steep, so make sure you have some good shoes on!

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThis cottage and location are ideal for guests travelling with children. Kids are going to be just as impressed by the views and the property as the adults are! You can head out on long walks straight from the property, fire up the barbecue for meals together as a family, or curl up together in the living room with the fire lit ready for an evening of games and family fun.
Of course, a day at the beach never goes amiss when kids are involved! Sandsend Beach is wonderful for a day of family fun. Just a short drive from the cottage, there are ice-creams galore and a lovely cafe overlooking the beach. If you enjoy the waves, you may want to take a course with Whitby Surf School which is located on the promenade of West Cliff Beach. You can learn to surf or stand-up paddleboard with fully qualified instructors or else you can just hire the boards and kayaks. It is great fun!
Whitby boasts amusement arcades, Doodlepots Ceramic Cafe, Pannett Park with its maritime themed play area and Jurassic Gardens and various museums to entertain families. The Whitby Museum has numerous collections and a chance to find out about Captain Cook. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum also offers excellent displays about him. Whitby’s Dracula Experience offers an entertaining tour explaining Dracula’s connection to Whitby though it might scare the young ones!
Visitors to the Whitby Whale Watching Centre enjoy boat trips to watch for minke, sperm, humpback, and northern whales as well as porpoises, bottle-nosed dolphins, jellyfish, and sharks. Every year the summer and autumn shoals of herring migrate to the coast off Yorkshire bringing with them huge numbers of sharks, seals, dolphins, and whales. The boat trips last for 4 hours.
You can also take a trip on board Bark Endeavour which is an authentic replica of Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour created to a 40% scale. You will enjoy wonderful views of the Jurassic coastline and hopefully see seals, sea birds, dolphins, porpoises, and whales.
