Overview of Valley Cottage

What Oliver loves…

  • The fresh, simple and elegant interior will make guests feel right at home.
  • Guests can snuggle up by one of the two open fires with a beer and Welsh rarebit.
  • The property is deliciously rural, offering a wonderful chance to stare at the stars by night.

What you should know…

  • Mobile phone reception is changeable depending on the provider.
  • Guests should bring an umbrella.

Valley Cottage is a self catering cottage located in an incredibly secluded valley directly under the Black Mountains. It is near the famous town of Hay-on-Wye. There is no noise or light pollution and it is almost completely void of any mobile network coverage. It is possible to use the wi-fi on some phones.

The cottage is detached from all other buildings and has no immediate neighbours. There is a small stream and a very beautiful waterfall directly beside the property. Two open fires, oil fired Aga, deep down-filled duvets, cast iron baths and a shower borrowed from the Savoy Hotel, London are all luxury features.

The approach is suitably exciting. A narrow track winds its way into the property from the mountain road. The cottage is situated just off the hill or common, and there is an enormous amount of walkable, explorable, just-sit-down-on-able hillside.

Interior & Grounds

The house sleeps up to 8 in 3 bedrooms (2 doubles and a twin, 2 of the bedrooms each having an extra single bed). In addition there are 2 bathrooms (1 bath and 1 bath with walk-in shower - the enormous head of which was acquired whilst working very hard at the Savoy Hotel, London)!

Facilities include: Kitchen – AGA plus 4 Gas Hob Burner, Larder, Sitting Room, Dining Room, Drawing Room, Jacques Pool Table, Garden with terrace, BBQ, Sky TV, Wi-Fi, Linen included, Washing machine, Dishwasher, Cot available.

Please note that the 2nd building shown in the photographs is a garage for storage only.

Map, Location & Local Information

There are a host of activities in the local area. The Brecon Beacons National Park and the Wye and Usk Valleys mean that most rural activities are available. These include: hunting, shooting, river and lake fishing (ghillie available), horse riding, paragliding, regular gliding, rock climbing and abseiling, gorge walking & adventure days, rafting, kayaking, Canadian canoeing, archery, caving and potholing, golfing, mountain biking, mountain boarding, off-road driving, orienteering, paint-balling, quad biking, raft building, rally carting, target shooting, mountain walking and mountain skills, clay pigeon shooting, motoring along the wonderful mountain roads or simply sitting on Llandefalle Common under the red kites and buzzards watching the welsh mountain ponies in their natural habitat.

It is recommended that the latter activity be experienced with the following essential equipment: 1 large piece of Welsh cheese, a loaf of the local malted granary bread and at least one fine bottle of red wine.

The Region

While the image of lush valleys and a laid-back lifestyle are right at the heart of a holiday in Wales, don’t think stunning landscapes and a bit of relaxation are the only thing on offer in this beautiful country. Don’t believe us?

  • Lovely cottage

A fabulous oasis in the Brecon’s we loved being surrounded by sheep and their lambs. Pity we had to leave a day early but we definitely feel we got bang for our buck here! Loved seeing photos of the house before the renovation, what a transformation. All the best from the Cotswolds.

  • Amazing, amazing, amazing!

  • Wonderful stay

Brilliant cottage with so much character, idyllic setting albeit hard to find. Magical! will be hard to find somewhere else living up to this place. Hot tub was great but took lots of effort to work and facilities great. Lovely views and location. Plenty of Wals and thing to do. Shame there was no snow! Loved Lord Hereford's knob abd Hay-on-wye. Thank you

  • Thank you for another wonderful stay

Fantastic to be back again and had a wonderful week here despite the weather. I cannot think of a better place to be rained in! Love the work you have done to the cottage and thanks once again for your hospitality and help making new and cherished memories.

Thank you for a wonderful relaxing week. What a superb place to spend our family Christmas. Throughly enjoyed by all x x

  • Fantastic relaxing week

Posted by Kat, Lisa, Teddy & Richard on 10/10/2016

The blizzard's a good excuse to stay in the next to the fire. Poor poor lambs!(but good wine). Kids turnd semi feral with bow and arrows, feather head dresses, lovong mud and the stream (+ rope swing!) tired nicely early. Will definitely come back!

  • Stunning, peaceful and homely

Posted by Chris S on 20/08/2013

Set in stunning country side, our only neighbours were the sheep and wildlife. Peacefully private but only a few minutes from Hay-on-Wye and not far from Brecon. The house is fully equipped and has a really homely and welcoming feel throughout.
