Overview

Wedding Venue

This ivy-covered Palladian-style country villa in Somerset is an ideal location for an intimate celebration. Built by Thomas Fox in 1797, both the main house and stables are steeped in history. They sit within 4 acres of gardens bordering a shady stream, where a silent mill stands watch. Inside, the warm wallpapered dining room is fit for a banquet - after dinner the games room and dance hall will ring with mirth.

Your guests will explore the many nooks and crannies in the manor - the 10 bedrooms in the main house are furnished sumptuously with lovely bedding, family antiques, and a fresh design sense. If you have a larger party (up to 31), the converted stables can be rented as well, to add 5 bedrooms and its own country kitchen.

This family villa is located in the small town of Wellington, close to a range of amenities. If you're up for an adventure, Exmoor National Park lies an hour's drive away (look for the herds of beautiful wild ponies!) With the airport close by at Exeter (35 km), it won’t be hard to entice your family and friends to this holiday villa and the gorgeous lands beyond.

The options are virtually endless, but here are some of the more popular choices:

A massage is just the thing to soothe away stress! The masseurs come to the house for a minimum of 3 hours, for treatment in either hour or half hour increments.

Archery, laser clay and pistol shooting can be arranged in the grounds. This is ideal for guests short of time or those that don’t fancy driving further afield.

If guests don’t mind a scenic drive down to Exmoor, there is nothing more exhilarating than horse riding on the hills. This can be combined with fly fishing and clay shooting as all three are quite near each other. There is also the prospect of meeting up afterwards for a pub lunch to tempt everyone out of the house.

On the entertainment front, the casino night is very popular and is strictly for fun since the owners do not have a gaming licence. A murder mystery or a wide range of musicians, from a solo pianist to a ceilidh or from bluegrass to dinner jazz and anything in between can also be arranged.

Hire your own sports complex: The property has a private arrangement with a local public school to hire their facilities over weekends. If guests fancy a cricket pitch for some 20:20 fun with tea in the pavilion, fabulous tennis and squash courts or fencing in the salon with coach and Olympic champion Gyorgy Felletar, the sports hall is a perfect choise. The sports hall can be hired by the hour for 5-a-side football, badminton or basketball.

Cooking skills: Chefs can assist guests in a fun experience producing a meal. The Thai course is very popular.

Golf: The owners can direct guests to excellent parkland, championship and links courses all within 5-10 miles of the property.

Walking: A gentle stroll or a more energetic hike up a hillside are both options that usually have a pub along the way. There are maps and guided walks at the houses, and the owners can send the information to guests before they arrive.

Quantock Hills, the home and inspiration to the writers Wordsworth and Coleridge and also home for the oldest breed of wild pony is glorious for walking, especially down Dead Woman’s Ditch.

The Blackdown Hills is an area of outstanding natural beauty and the West Country's best kept secret.

Exmoor, including Lorna Doone country, Tarr Steps. All are beautiful areas to explore. The owners can recommend an excellent natural river pool to swim in the summer at OS grid ref. 3286.

Surfing: The owners can direct guests to great spots or arrange excellent private tuition for a group including all equipment.

Branscombe Beach on the south coast near Lyme Regis is a romantic, wonderful, shingle beach. Early summer evening barbecues on the beach are also highly recommended.

Saunton Sands near Barnstaple, north Devon, is a two mile stretch of lovely, soft, sandy beach. Around the corner is the popular surfing beach Croyde Bay and Woolacombe Sand. Roads around this area can get busy in the peak summer months.

Event information

The house is hired from Friday to Monday (for midweek please enquire) and most people tend to share the cost among the guests staying on the grounds. Therefore, there is no separate venue cost for the wedding.

The owners can arrange the ceremonies inside the house for up to 75 guests. Sometimes they can arrange a humanist ceremony in the garden for larger numbers.

Marquees are priced according to their size, and our quotes include all linings, lighting, tables and chairs for the number of people attending. Flowers, cakes, and fun activities including massage, archery, hot air balloons and croquet can also be arranged.

The house and grounds are ideal for a wedding celebration.  Catering is for an intimate house party wedding with up to 40 guests, and larger celebrations up to 160 guests can use a marquee.  No two weddings are alike, and guests can start with a blank canvas and build the event with their own wishes.

The house is also an ideal out of office environment suitable for team building, training and away days. Previous clients include Microsoft, Coco-Cola, Morgan Stanley, Bupa, and Virgin.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Peter

How long have you owned the property?
19 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
It's an old family home of one of the partners and as such has an incredible heritage. The history includes banking, woollen & worsted mills, mountaineering, ski-ing and the quakers. The listed property itself has great charm and character with so many interesting artifacts to admire. The garden has the old mill leat running beside it and provides a beautiful backdrop to the house.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The family bank (Fox Fowler) was the last private bank in England to issue its own bank-notes. The Fox family were the first people to take down-hill skis to Grindlewald, Switzerland The Fox family mill supplied millions of pairs of puttees to the army during the first world war. Many of the artifacts in the house relate to these stories.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Alexandra Armstrong, Jamie Theakston, Mark Owen (Take That), Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall, David Bradley (Harry Potter).

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
Turning a room into a Bat Cave complete with roaming Bat light on the house.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Mountain biking or walking on the quantocks. Visit Lyme Regis, have coffee at the elegant Alexandra Hotel and have a paddle in the sea. Fish and chips on the beach perhaps?

Really eat?
The local produce is great. If you want to cook, stock up at Rumwell Farm Shop if not, our caterers get rave reviews. We can also recommend country pubs.

Really see?
Wellington Monument, tallest 3 sided obelisk in the world! We also have fabulous countryside, hills, rivers and moors to explore.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Our suggestion would be don’t arrange too much away from the house, particularly if you're here just for a short break. Once you're at the house you'll want to relax and enjoy the surroundings with your friends and family and a lot of our groups find there is plenty to do (or can be arranged to do) at the house.

  • The house was an ideal venue for our holiday

    Created on 29/07/2016

The house was an ideal venue for creating our own holiday, particularly because it still has very much the feel of the family home it once was, and at the same time offering big spaces, comfort and the warm friendliness of your team.

  • Our expectations were exceeded on every level

    Created on 29/02/2016

The experience was faultless. Peter, Beverley and the team were friendly and accommodating but professional and passionate about what they do and our expectations of the house and activities we booked were exceeded on every level. The L group!

The house is amazing, completely kitted out with everything anyone would need, comfortable and welcoming. Anthony was great and the Thai food was amazing, how they prepare that on the premises completely from scratch I have no idea! Sophie

  • We had the most amazing time

    Posted by Tom on 16/01/2016

We had the most amazing time and everyone has taken away great memories from our time there.

All of the guests were super impressed by the property, the dining room and party room were fantastic, and helped to make the evenings so much fun.

One last point, which is hugely valuable, is the relaxed attitude of you all. It really makes a massive difference to guests as we all felt that we could relax and enjoy ourselves and have fun in the property.

Such a beautiful historic house to celebrate a 40th birthday weekend!

We travelled from Devon, Wiltshire, London and even New Zealand to be here.

We had a simply amazing time.

  • Ideal for a large group

Posted by Laura's Group on 02/05/2015

I would definitely recommend the house for a large group. The house catered for everything we needed, the two dishwashers and multiple fridges were a god-send too! Peter and Beverley were very helpful all the way through the booking process and were on hand for any questions I had in the run up to our weekend.

  • Absolutely immense - UK at its best!

Posted by Kay group on 23/06/2014

The house itself is beautiful, old and interesting - a proper taste of Georgian manor life. Plenty big enough, loads of space and lots of different rooms to explore and hang out in. We had a hog roast in the grounds one day which was laid on perfectly, with hay bales and torches and a garden bar under the tree. For a slice of luxury country living in the UK you really can't beat this place. Will definitely go back one day, can't recommend it enough.

  • We had the most wonderful time.

Thank you and please pass my thanks on to Peter. It's a very special property. It even got one of our couples thinking of a wedding there! Quite an achievement!

  • We had a fantastic time at the house

Posted by Chamberlain group on 23/06/2014

It is an incredible place and the facilities just made the whole thing easy; something not generally associated with feeding and sleeping that many people

  • We will definitely recommend you to all our friends.

Wellington Manor is a fantastic house run by a fantastic company.

Many thanks for arranging the shooting, fishing and 3 course dinner.

  • Amazing, amazing, amazing - beyond perfect!

Posted by Tylen Group on 19/11/2013

The property is maintained to a very high standard, the rooms are all very large and the garden is also fantastic. The games room is great to keep adults and kids entertained regardless of the weather and the dining room is the perfect one for a dinner with that many people around the table. The owner Peter was also very friendly and flexible. Excellent service! I highly recommend this place to anyone who is organizing a gathering, with or without children. I just can't wait until I have another excuse to go back to Wellington myself!

Thank you so much for all you have done for us in making our wedding day very special. It was very relaxed and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The food was very yummy too! Everyone has said what a gorgeous place Tone dale is. We are already talking about another visit, the family were so sad to be leaving there on Monday.

  • A wonderful place to spend such fun times

Posted by Claire Bendall on 14/05/2013

Thanks to everyone at Wellington Manor for providing the perfect venue for our wedding last Saturday. The food was great (particularly the beef on Saturday evening and the Thai of Sunday). Tone Dale has an incredibly relaxed feel and was perfect for the low key "stealth" wedding that we wanted. A wonderful place to spend such fun times with our nearest and dearest. Thanks once again.

  • "Fabulous Fortieth party venue"

Posted by Anon . on 15/01/2013

We were a lucky group of friends and family to be invited to celebrate Barney's 40th in such style. Wellington Manor with its understated luxury where everything had been thought of created the perfect scene to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Cocktails on the lawn, candle-lit dinners, breakfast in light-filled rooms and croquet (rules somewhat flexible). If this is what being 40 means, bring it on!

Wonderful house + wonderful family = wonderful weekend!

Thank you for your great organisation and flexibility – and for arranging perfect weather too!

We loved the shooting – will all be challenging Pistol Pete at Rio in 2016!

And the croquet provided much merriment!
