At the heart of the Somerset levels in the village of Mark, lies Cooksbridge Chapel, a sleek modern restoration of an old Baptist Chapel. Originally constructed in 1866, the beautiful stone structure maintains its bold character with high vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows, offering spacious self-catering accommodation for up to eight people.

The furnishings and décor are finished to the highest standard, combining antiques and upcycled items, all fitting within a fresh colour scheme that is handsome yet homely. The lounge has a high vaulted ceiling that echoes of the buildings former purpose, yet the wood burner keeps this spacious room warm and comfortable all year round.

Cooksbridge Chapel is full of subtle nods to the past, ensuring you feel connected with the roots of the building whilst experiencing the height of modern luxury. Complete with all modern appliances, the kitchen is made to be easily accessible, and is complete with several coffee machines so connoisseurs can start each day with that perfect morning coffee, just the way they like it.

A unique highlight of this property is undoubtedly the stained glass windows that transform the rooms as the sun passes across the sky, filling the house with warm shades of natural light, creating a peace and tranquility that will define your stay at Cooksbridge Chapel.

What Oliver loves…

  • The original structure of this chapel is really something special, and the stained glass windows and pointed roof create an air of serenity with plenty of quirky little spaces to cosy into.
  • The location is a dream for foodies and nature lovers, with the flourishing wildlife of the Somerset Levels, the home of Cheddar cheese, and plenty of farmers markets all within easy reach.
  • The solid stone walls and sleepy village setting make this property the ideal retreat to find true peace and quiet that is such a rarity in modern life.

What you should know…

  • Steep stairs and hard stone floors mean this property is not suitable for kids under five years old.
  • Though there is a local bus service, a car is pretty important if you want to really explore the local area.
  • Unfortunately, this site is not wheelchair accessible.

Cooksbridge Chapel is located 10 minutes from Junction 22 on the M5 and 20 minutes from Bristol Airport.

Cooksbridge Chapel is ideally located for exploring the coast, towns or countryside. Somerset has an incredible variety of things to do, for nature lovers, walkers, bird watchers, history buffs, foodies, shopaholics or to simply idle away the time away at a country pub or strolling along the beach.

It is one of the undiscovered counties of the UK, with something to delight everyone, from Glastonbury to the Guy Fawkes carnivals in November, historic towns such as Wells, beautiful countryside nearby like the Cheddar Gorge and don’t forget the cider and cheese!

Local and nearby places of interest:

Cheddar (3 miles) Cheddar's majestic Gorge and extensive cave system need no introduction – and neither does its ubiquitous cheese! With a multitude of visitor centres, there is plenty for the visitor to do in Cheddar indoors and out, and the charming medieval town of Axbridge lies just beyond.

Wells (8 miles away) England's smallest city is an architectural and shopper's delight. Water (from Wells' well!) runs alongside the pretty streets and Market Square. Visit the imposing medieval cathedral and Bishop's Palace as well as the many shops, pubs and restaurants.

Weston-super-Mare (15 miles) a popular resort since Victorian times and thanks to its sandy golden beaches, views over to the Welsh coast and a whole host of attractions, it maintains its pull. Other Somerset seaside resorts at Burnham-on-Sea, Brean Down and Clevedon are also nearby.

Bristol (23 miles) and Bath (34 miles) Bristol is a handsome city boasting a rich heritage, including Isambard Kingdom Brunel's iconic Suspension Bridge and the restored splendour of the SS Great Britain. Bath's Georgian terraces and Roman baths are a must-see for any visitor to the West Country.

The Somerset Levels
The Somerset Levels – a unique and mysterious landscape of flat, drained marshland. Amid the looming mounds of peat and from within the withy-beds and drainage 'rhynes' there is a very rich wildlife. There are a number of wildlife and bird reserves here, including Shapwick Heath – noted for its mass starling roosts, a true natural splendor!

Visitors in November should really try to catch some of the carnival processions held in most of the Somerset towns. The carnivals are an amazing spectacle, hundreds of floats and costumed pedestrians and as much glitz as you’d find in New Orleans!

Glastonbury Mythical Avalon is Britain's spiritual centre and home to the Glastonbury Tor & Abbey and the legendary international music festival.

The Perfect Holiday Home. Thank you.

  • A lovely place to enjoy Christmas

Posted by Goodman S on 30/12/2017

Had a great week over Christmas in this beautiful property. Well equipped kitchen in which to rustle up lunch on the big day and very comfortable beds and sofas to laze around in over the holiday.
A couple of pubs in walking distance were much appreciated.
The house was very cosy and festive and beautifully decorated.

  • There will be a next time...

    Posted by Helen on 05/10/2017

We absolutely loved this place and hope to be back one day. We were a group of relatives (all women, different ages) taking a weekend away to catch up. I have already recommended to several friends who intend to book. It was beautifully furnished, stylish yet homely and comfortable, had everything we needed, plus lots of extra touches that made it feel like we were dipping our toes gently into luxury. Although we didn't explore the area much (the house was too fabulous, so we made the most of it!), we did sample one of the village restaurants and found a very warm welcome and fabulous food. Next time, we'll return and explore what seemed to be stunning surrounding countryside, perfect for walks and bike rides, and you wouldn't even know it was a stone's throw from the motorway. The photos don't do the place justice.

  • We'll be back!

    Posted by Adam on 16/11/2016

This is the second time we have stayed at Cooksbridge Chapel and it certainly lives up to its claim of luxury self catering holidaying. It's in such a fantastic position - a short walk in either direction to two great foody pubs. With spacious parking, this fantastic accommodation is ideal for our bi-annual get together (a group of 8 friends who go back together over 35 years). The bedrooms are very comfortable, the kitchen is spot on and the living space is superb; ideal for lounging round together with a healthy glass of wine and good conversation. The dining room is perfect to get everyone round the table - often for more wine and great food... upstairs there's a little office room which was great to get away to, to write the odd letter (or escape with a guitar so as not to bother the others...).
The standard of the entire accommodation is extremely high - and clearly, other guests treat it with great respect. In addition, the owner is incredibly accommodating - making sure some of the basics are available on arrival (and being very gentle when none in 8 of us remembered to take the key with us....).
I guess the ultimate test of any holiday let would be, "would you come back again." Well we already did - and I've no doubt we will do so again at some stage in the future. This one's a little gem (if truth be known, I didn't really want to tell you about it....). This is a great, family/friends friendly place to stay, with some fabulous sights nearby - we took in the Bridgwater Carnival and a couple of walks up Crooks Peak and Glastonbury Tor... very convenient to get out and really enjoy the beautiful county of Somerset.

  • Fantastic place and a lovely location.

A wonderful house enjoyed by all. Spent a lovely week exploring Somerset visiting Wells, Glastonbury, Cheddar and Stonehenge. The house provided a lovely base to spend evenings especially when the sun allowed us to use the wonderful outdoor seating area.
Would recommend Glastonbury Tor for Beautiful views of the surrounding countryside!
We spent our last night indulging in a delicious meal at the White Horse. Both food and service were excellent. Highly recommend!!!

Cooksbridge Chapel is very nice and neat. It was very cozy and we had a great time lounging around. The backyard is amazing. I would read out there with my aunt and mom. I would run around in the grass and get exercise. I loved our stay at the house!

We are just back from renting the Cooksbridge Chapel and couldn’t have been more pleased with the property. In Cooksbridge Chapel, we felt that we had the character of a National Trust Holiday Cottage coupled with the comforts and convenience of a modern home. Our party ranged from teenagers looking for some separate space of their own to a retired person looking for a first floor bedroom and facilities. The property more than met those needs and offered great outdoor space as well. The kitchen had everything that we needed, from a dishwasher to espresso machine. Laundry facilities were convenient and simple to use. The beds were new and very comfortable, and the bathrooms were very modern and functional. Wi-Fi was easy to access and cell phone coverage was excellent. The entire property is really comfortable and immaculate, and the enclosed garden and outdoor dining and entertaining area were an unexpected bonus. We chose the Cooksbridge Chapel after looking at a number of properties around Somerset and Devon. We were looking to be accessible to Bath, Wells and Glastonbury, all easily reachable from Mark. Due to easy access to the M5 (15 minutes), we were only two hours from Heathrow and could easily make day trips to Caerphilly Castle in Wales or to points further south and west in England. The village itself met all of our needs - We visited both the White Horse and the Pack Horse several times. The food was good at both locations, and for relaxing we liked the ambiance of the pub area at the White Horse in particular. Both are less than a quarter mile from the Old Chapel and are easily walkable. There is also a small grocer about 100 yards away that had most of what we needed at the house. In the nearby village of Wedmore, there are a number of other shops and bakeries. In terms of things off the beaten path, we really enjoyed the walk over at Brean Down. If we had discovered this earlier in the trip, we would have visited a couple of times. We also hiked up Cheddar Gorge and would have liked to have spent more time exploring that area. We also want to put a plug in for the cheese at the Westcombe Dairy just outside of Shepton Mallet. Our host, Tracy, was very accommodating and had the place prepared perfectly. This is a great property and really helped us make the most of our trip.
