HISTORY OF TURRET MANSION HOUSE

Built in 1824 - Turret Mansion House has welcomed many notable guests during its time as a former hotel and private residence. Until 1832 the House formed part of a large estate belonging to Vice Admiral Charles Fleming of Biggar and Cumbernauld. At that time the House, known as Wester Toftcombs, the farm of Easter Toftcombs and Mid Toftcombs were bought by John Liddle of West Mains.
hese were tenanted by four generations of the Gladstone family, later made famous by the British Prime Minister, William Gladstone.

George Orwell resided at the house in May 1946 as a guest of his friend Georges Kopp who was his commander in the Spanish civil war. We are looking forward to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the publication of Nineteen Eighty Four with the Orwell Society at the house in October 2019. How long have you owned the property?
We have owned the house for 15 years we lived in it as our family home when our 3 kids were young and growing up - we had horses / sheep dogs/rabbits and cats and the children loved the huge grounds and the vast number of activities in the area. The first day we moved in we saw our middle child had drop her game boy and was  carrying the newly born lambs around the front paddock. It is such a beautiful relaxing house with the most fantastic views.

  • A memorable four days

    on 10/04/2022

The big house and grounds provided a marvellous gathering point for a 23 member family reunion. Very comfortable. Excellent kitchen arrangements for catering a large party. Lots of different rooms for children and adults to split up into groups. Spacious grounds which the children loved. A most memorable four days. Thank you!

  • Perfect

    on 14/07/2019

Wonderful and warm, comfortable and great location for the Border’s area and Edinburgh. Accommodated our 15 family perfectly.

  • Isaac the Butler

    on 16/07/2010

And that brings me to Isaac. (THE BUTLER) who really did help make the weekend, his manners were impeccable and the service we got from him from the moment we arrived until we left was absolutely spot on. I have never been force fed so much bacon, eggs, blackpudding, haggis, beans and it goes on, in my life. We went to bed fairly late with Isaac still serving us drinks, and woke up to a clean house and the smell of breakfast and coffee. He was always suitably dressed, with a smile on his face and helped out with anything we needed, a thoroughly nice chap and great at his job. The caterers were excellent and produced very good food with us barely noticing they had even arrived.
