Overview of C14th Private Castle

What Oliver loves…

    • The castle itself is a work of art, especially the carved woodwork in the fabulous dining room!
    • There is a lovely walk around a nearby lake and forest which is located on the castle's land.
    • The Siamese Kichen Pewter Plate is good Thai resturant not far from the castle.
    • Ceilings are high, rooms are big, so much freedom and space is to be found!
    • There are many castles and other places to see in the area, giving you lots of things to do during your stay. That will give you a full experience of the region around.
    • Owners are more than happy to give you a tour and explain to you the history of their castle, which has been in their family for over 3 centuries, since 1696!

      What you should know…

        • Bring a torch if you want to eat in the village at night as the walk is unlit.
        • The castle can be a bit chilly at night, so if visiting in winter pack warm clothes.
        • Public transport is limited, but who doesn't enjoy a long walk in the countryside. It is always refreshing and so full of adventures!

The property is a privately owned Scottish castle that uniquely combines private home and exclusive use luxury venues. The castle has full licensing as a wedding venue and is equally suitable for corporate events, private stays and parties.

This historic 14th century castle is situated in the heart of the rolling hills, fields and trees of the beautiful Scottish Borders on the edge of a little market town. The castle itself is totally secluded in 1200 acres of grounds, yet conveniently, shops, bars and restaurants are within walking distance.

The family have owned the Castle since 1696, and along with their dedicated staff welcome guests to their home, which retains a very intimate and personal feel in spite of its historic grandeur and furnishings. The main Castle sleeps up to 23.

Groups of up to 60 may be seated to dine in the great hall. There are ample grounds for marquees, sporting and leisure activities.

          Interior & Grounds

The interior of the castle contains fine examples of intricately carved wood and plaster work, and is furnished from the 17th century onwards. The whole aspect of the house is sunny and south facing, and the large dining room in particular is a dramatic, warmly panelled room with 10 ft thick alcoves.

The beautiful landscaped grounds comprise 1200 acres of fields, woods, hills, vistas, a nature reserve and lake. You will be able to enjoy fine walks, croquet on the lawn, billiards (by special arrangement), tennis and table tennis.

          Map, Location & Local Information

The castle is superbly set within a 1,200 acre estate in the Idyllic borders town of Duns, just half an hour's drive from sandy beaches, and is perfectly positioned to make the most of a holiday in Scotland's Border country.

From Duns and C14th Private Castle, the sea is about 16 miles away at the ancient fortified town and fishing port of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. The Tweed is one of Scotland's premier salmon rivers. Close by are the old fishing villages of Eyemouth, Cove, and Coldingham. The shore at Berwick is predominantly rocky but north of the pier at Spittal is a sandy beach sheltered from the strong tidal currents by an offshore reef. In shore, between the reef and the beach, there is safe bathing.

An hour's drive to the north-east of the Castle lies Edinburgh with its fine shops, magnificent architecture, fascinating museums and many good restaurants and bars. The ancient abbey towns of Kelso, Melrose and Jedburgh are within easy driving distance, and there are several well-known East Coast golf courses in the vicinity - the nearest in the town itself, which has an 18 hole course as well as tennis, a swimming pool and a sports centre.
