Overview
In continuous occupation since it was built in 1545, this is a fine example of a 16th-century Z-plan tower house with a distinctive feature pepper-pot turret. With a red sandstone finish and a pink-wash exterior, the reddish hue seems to change colour whilst you are there. Particular castle-like features include the gun-loops and shot-holes, as well as the vaulted entrance and Great Hall. Set in open countryside, within 10 acres of grounds, surrounded by lawns and mature woodland, the castle is accessible by a drive on each side. On entering, the corridor takes you to a vaulted entrance hall, with a games room off it. Beyond, the rooms are more traditional, and there is a dining room that has the capacity for up to 14 people, a breakfasting room, utility room and a country-style kitchen.
On the first floor, there is a Great Hall which is the large drawing-room, a sitting room, a TV room, a small library and the first bedroom and shower room. The majority of the bedrooms and bathrooms are to be found on the second floor. Also available is an eco-friendly (with no added chemicals) rustic wooden barrel hot tub, heated by a wood-burning stove. There is plenty of parking to the front and side of the castle. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 14 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. Two dogs are allowed, at ground level only. This is an ideal large holiday home to have a family holiday to discover the Angus and Tayside area and enjoy being king or queen of this castle.
Entering this castle via the tower section takes you into the oldest part of the castle. If those stone walls could talk, they would have some tall tales to tell. This takes you through the stone-clad vaulted entrance hall, as well as the vaulted games room with its table football table and small fold-able pool table. Whilst the kitchen and dining room are beyond; the reception rooms are to be found on the first floor. The Great Hall is the drawing room with comfortable seating at each end of the room, with one working open fire. A small library is located in the corner turret. The sitting room is next door, which is another large room and this is where you will relax in cosy surrounds by the wood-burning stove with the TV on. Additionally, there is a smaller room with TV, which may be more suitable for children.
The dining room is a large room with a selection of sizes of dining tables, which can be added together if required or left as they are. Next door is the large kitchen, which has an old fashioned feel about it, in the country kitchen style. With plenty of cooking capacity with a traditional AGA and two additional electric cookers with 4-ring hobs and ovens, this is a castle that is used to cooking for large numbers. The country table can seat up to 6 in the kitchen, or you can choose the breakfast room next door, which can dine your group in a less formal environment. There is a utility room next door. There is a side door which may be easier to deliver your foodstuffs from car to kitchen.

A wonderful vacation!
16 friends + 1 wonderful castle = a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Loved curling up in the old formal dining room (we called it the yellow room) with my book and fire in the woodstove. Couldn't believe we never ran out of hot water! Learned to cook on a hob and use the Aga. The owners are wonderful. A great time was had by all.

Really interesting mix of medieval & victorian building and rooms. Lovely owners who are very knowledgeable about the place. Nice peaceful gardens to walk in. Close to all local amenities in Arbroath

What a gem of a place
What an absolute pleasure it was to hire this amazing castle for our special day thank you so much to the Lansley’s they were amazing from start to finnish and couldn’t of done anymore for us. All the family had a great time exploring and enjoying both inside and outside of the castle. What a gem of a place.

Highly recommend
We stayed in the Castle and loved it. The castle is very old but well equipped, warm and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. There was the odd technical issue in such an old buiIdling but this did not stop us from having an enjoyable weekend. They are dog friendly which is also fantastic. Would highly recommend this venue to anyone wanting a special stay in a real castle!

Great for a family get together
Had this Castle in Arbroath for a three day weekend and what a great experience. Built in the 1500s and now tastefully renovated and fully equipped for large groups, the castle is a unique and great experience and caters for around 16 people so great for a family get together or a big weekend with friends. Beds were super comfortable and the gardens and surrounds are just lovely. A short drive into Arbroath for nice cafes and restaurants and lots to see and do in the nearby areas. Highly recommended and would love to return.
