Overview of Kildare House

What Oliver loves…

  • When going into Kildare, guests can have a meal out at Harte's Bar & Grill, which has amazing steak.
  • For a special occasion, guests can go to The Hanged Man
  • It is magical to sit outside at dusk with a glass of wine and look out into the hills of Ireland.

What you should know…

  • Mobile phone reception varies depending on the phone provider.
  • The interiors are getting a little 'tired', but it's still a marvelous party house, and is exceptional value for money for a boozy weekend!
  • Speak to the owner about fishing on the river at the foot of the grounds

Conveniently located just 4 kms from the nearest town and close to the N7 and N9, Kildare House is the perfect property for an honest, value for money break with groups of friends.

Set in 8 acres of private grounds, this Georgian property has been restored by the current owners, boasting spacious living accommodation and sprawling reception rooms, making it an ideal venue for parties. Steeped in history as one the largest Georgian houses in Kildare, visitors will be hard pressed to find another setting as private, and conveniently located as this.

Approached via a long tree-lined avenue, Kildare House was built in 1709 by Thomas Burgh and remained the home of his descendants for 200 years.

The house has been extensively restored, retaining many of its original period features. In particular, the main reception rooms are both spacious and imposing with plaster work ceilings, marble fireplaces and mahogany doors with gilded handles.

The website prices are based on groups of up to 30 in 15 bedrooms but a 25% discount applies for groups of up to 16 in the 8 first floor bedrooms. Please ask our concierge team for further details and quotes.

An additional 4 guests can be accommodated in 2 smaller bedrooms not featured above, please ask our concierge team for further details and quotes.

Kildare House Reviews

  • Cold, but charming - a great wedding

Posted by Kenneth T on 17/12/2016

We got to the Kildare house and we loved the venue. There could be a few things changed that some people may not love, its cold in the winter in many of the rooms and bathrooms. The whole home could use a dusting and some tic, but the charm of the home cannot be questioned. We loved the rustic rooms and victorian feel. I felt like it was an 18th century party. Everyone congregated in the living rooms and bar for drinks and the fireplaces and just talked. No tvs, just people conversing. They let us do pretty much whatever we wanted and had great recommendations for vendors etc.

They recently changed the trim color on the outside of the house to an awful blue that our photographer will have to edit in our pictures because it was so bad but other than that... we loved it. We would go back but probably in september, not late november.

  • The house is so unique

    Dear Des & Bill

We can't thank you enough for all you did to make our stay so special. The house is so unique and exactly what we wanted. We hope to be back for a reunion in the future. I hear my cousin Eamonn is having his reception there next year too. the good word is spreading.... K&N

  • Kildare Palladian Mansion Stay

Posted by Lauren P on 01/06/2016

We had a great time at the Kildare Palladian Mansion. The house is very beautiful, having been designed by Thomas Burgh, the architect of the Trinity College Library. The house is very old and elegantly rustic, which was what we were looking for for our week-long vacation in Ireland prior to our wedding.

  • Old Worldly but with Modern facilities, Romantic place to be in

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

We held my nieces Birthday party and family get together here in early Dec. 2011 and it was very impressive, the en suite rooms and halls really lovely. A Tiny criticism tho' we could have been better equipped with cooking facilities and not large industrial cookers, in kitchen.l believe this has been addressed. The grounds are lovely and the entrance quite a walking distance from main road. I think it is a great Venue for Family re-unions, Weddings and all special occasions, and parties. Thanks for sending me my Mobile Phone which l left behind.

  • The WOW factor!!

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

If you and your friends and family want a space for a serious party in the most wonderful old house with space, character, big log fires, grounds and beautiful surroundings, you really couldn't do much better than Kildare Palladian Mansion in Athy. We had the most wonderful time staying for 3 days to celebrate a friends 40th. The kitchen meant our friends could feed us all with gorgeous food, and the living areas plus bar gave us plenty of space for relaxing and chilling. Des was a perfect host - let us all get on with it but helped with queries and keeping everything in order. All in all- a brilliant venue for a big knees up with good friends and their family - perfect!

  • Workshop

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

I recently attended a 9 day workshop at Kildare. It was a wonderful venue, Stately public areas including a large but cosey drawing room where we had many fireside chats. The bedrooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. A big industrial kitchen where our lovely cook prepared fabulous meals for us. I really enjoyed and appreciated all the authentic period features around the house. There is beautiful countryside all around and I enjoyed the walks by the river. I was also thrilled when Des discovered the originals steps to the river which once bought all supplies to the house in it's early days. A wonderful stay and highly recommended

  • Girls Trip!

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

We had a group of 14 women from all over the United States. This mansion was amazing and the town of Athy was charming and welcoming. Des was helpful in recommending transportation for our day trips and the taxi service to and from town was easy and reasonable. This was such a great place to stay. We brought home so many stories and memories. I would highly recommend a trip tho Athy and to the Kildare Palladian Mansion in particular!!!

  • Amazing Trip with Friends

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

I was part of a group of 14 women that had the most wonderful weeks stay at the mansion. We had seen pictures on the website, but were still amazed at the size and quality of the accommodations. Each room was beautifully decorated and provided a quite sanctuary for each of us when needed. Des the owner was helpful and a delight with anything we needed. He also arranged a coach and driver for day trips for us, so no driving was required at a very reasonable price. The town of athy is small but very welcoming, both Des and our driver Christy gave us some wonderful recommendations for local restaurants and pubs which we frequented. If our driver was unavailable, a cab to or from town was easily obtainable, so I was pleasantly surprised at not needing a car. Day trips into Dublin were wonderful and easy at 1 hr away, but it was always good to get back to our beautiful house and lovely town. Highly recommend the Bert House, and I can't wait to go back!

  • Fantastic!!!

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

The mansion is beautiful inside and out -- very "shabby chic". The owner, Des, is most welcoming and very accommodating. He is happy to tell you about the (friendly) ghosts that live in the mansion and he was happy to set us up with a wonderful cook who made us a divine dinner.

The property is breathtaking, it is absolutely magical to sit outside at dusk with a glass of wine and look out into the hills of Ireland!!

  • Delightful

Posted by Anon User on 03/10/2012

I recently traveled to Ireland with 14 American women, I was the only native of Ireland. I came back to America with great National pride. Everywhere we traveled, the Irish people were lovely and friendly. This house is gorgeous! Des, the owner, couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, he arranged a local driver, Christy, to ferry us around. He always had a smile and was a great driver. The location is so beautiful, fields surround the property with horses grazing and daffodils blooming everywhere. The bedrooms were spacious, beautifully decorated. The en-suite bathrooms were large and the water pressure was good. Des always had the home fires burning, on our return, from long days sightseeing. Athy is a nice little town, with good pubs and a selection of different eateries. I would recommend this place to anyone. Don't wait! Book today.

  • 40th Birthday

Posted by Paul Limburn on 29/11/2011

Went to the House for my 40th birthday (Oct 11) with 22 friends. In summary we had an excellent time at the house and very much enjoyed our stay. We would have no hesitation in returning. The house offered superb value for money. All of the rooms had en-suites some with showers, some with baths and some with both. The shower in our room was hot and had a good flow. Some of the rooms are very large so take a while to warm up but this wasn't an issue for me. The four-poster bed was very comfortable with good linen and our room had a double aspect looking out on to the Irish countryside. Lovely! We organised a supermarket delivery to be there when we arrived. Cynthia came out to greet us and show us around. I had assigned rooms based on the plan Des sent across. The rooms were numbered on the plan but the numbers were not on the door only the name. This did create a little confusion but we soon sorted it. We organised a coach (details provided by Des) to take us into town on the first night. We used the coach company for the duration of our stay and they were always very prompt and very flexible. We went to Clancy's bar to listen to some traditional Irish music. We had a great night. The music was fantastic (happens every Thursday) - just be warned that this pub does get busy! The locals were truly welcoming. I did speak to the owner prior to our arrival and she did mention that she would lay on some nibbles but they did not materialise. This wasn't an issue as a few of us popped across the road to sample the local takeaway! We opted for Cynthia to cook breakfasts for us. They were excellent. Black and white pudding, beans, sausages, eggs, potatoes, bacon plus toast, juices, tea etc. We opted for buffet style and this worked well. Cynthia was totally flexible on when we opted to dine and for those that didn't make it up in time the food was kept warm. The men went off to play golf at Rathsallagh the following day. We hired clubs and buggies and got a great deal on the green fee. The course is lovely but it is quite tricky if you're a hacker like me! The girls remained back at the house. Some went for a walk and some stayed put. Des kept the fire in the lounge and bar area well stocked throughout the day and allowed the girls to decorate the place in preparation for birthday celebrations in the evening. Mountain bikes are listed on the website we booked through but are not yet available so if you expect to go out riding - as one of our party did it will have to be on the back of a horse. After rustling up a chilli in the large kitchen we ate in the main dining room. Apparently there was no cheese grater and I think we had a broken cork screw on the first night (though one was found on the second). I would suggest if you intend to do a significant amount of cooking you just double check that the equipment is there. I'm sure a quick call to Cynthia would suffice. We took over the bar next to the main sitting room which was great. This is a pay-bar that Des normally uses. However he allowed us to the stock the fridge with our own drinks and let us play bar tender. I'm not sure he was expecting us to request this but it was no hassle. Went racing in Naas the following day hired a box and again had an excellent experience. Stopped in Grace's bar in Naas on the way back and went into Athy in the early evening. We then headed back to the house. There is a snooker room downstairs (though no rest and scoreboard). There is also a cellar bar which we didn't use but which is very cosy and could look fab. I'm not sure if it was ready for use so you'd better check with Des. I think some of these downstairs areas are work-in-progress but we didn't really explore too closely. Generally though perhaps not 100% accurately - I'd describe the house as shabby chic. Des and Cynthia are bringing it back to life and doing a great job. If you look too closely some of the areas are frayed around the edge but if you chill out and go with the flow then its ideal. Don't expect 5-star hotel perfection. Simply chill-out, pour yourself a large glass of wine and enjoy it for what it is. A great place to stay (and party!) with friends and loved ones.
