Heatherside House is an elegant Georgian house situated remotely in open farmland close to the cliffs of the rugged and dramatic North Devon coast. This a designated ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ and the house has superb views out to sea, as well as inland across a wooded valley to the tall medieval tower of St Nectan's church.

Great care has been taken to retain the historic character of the building while discreetly incorporating the best modern services in order to provide a great sense of contemporary style without the feeling of being 'too new'!

Entrance hall with main staircase opening to formal panelled drawing room and dining room, with open fire and wood-burning stove respectively. Cellars include an original wine cellar and laundry facilities. The rear hall leads to a large flag-stoned kitchen with sunny breakfast room beyond. French windows open from the breakfast room to the walled terrace for outside dining. There is a boot/utility room, cloakroom and at the rear 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a secondary staircase.

Upstairs you will discover a large games room with petit-football and pool table and a computer set-up providing wi-fi internet and links to all local attractions and information. Beyond is the reading room facing West out to sea with comfortable sofas on which to curl up with a good book or watch the large screen TV with video/DVD.

There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms on the first floor and 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the second attic floor. Bedrooms range in style from the grand panelled Georgian rooms to the simple almost rustic and the attic which has the feel of a good modern barn conversion. All have been carefully designed planned and are equipped with sumptuous beds. Bathrooms are all newly fitted with top quality German fittings throughout. In total there are 10 bedrooms (all 6ft doubles or 3ft twins), four of which have an additional single 'daybed'. There are 8 bathrooms (5 bath / 3 shower), three of which are en-suite.

There are great spots nearby. Arrange excellent private tuition for your group including all equipment.

Owner Profile

Property Owner

How long have you owned the property?
05 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
When I first saw Heatherside House I was struck by the beauty of the location, standing proud on the hilltop looking over the surrounding countryside and towards the sea in the distance. The tranquility of its position also appealed to me. The renovation that Berry required though was extensive; it has been a labour of love and by using top quality materials in the hands of skilled crafts people has proved very popular since its completion in 2008.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Tim Henman and the british artist David Shepherd.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Go surfing on one of North Devons fabulous beaches, Croyde and Woolacombe are both favourites.

Really eat?
It's got to be fish! Why not try your hand at catching your own?

Really see?
Clovelly (6 miles away). Picture postcard perfect fishing village.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Do try the coastal path, stunning views and it will blow the cobwebs away. The walk to Berry Beach (pebbly) and Hartland Quay is worth doing too.

Its origins date back to medieval times, but the house was enlarged and completely remodeled in the 1760s to provide the home for the land agent of the neighbouring Hartland Abbey Estate. Workmanship was to exceptionally high standards for the time, including fine paneling to many of the rooms. The house remained remarkably untouched until acquired by the present owners who undertook its painstaking and sympathetic restoration in 2006/7. Great care has been taken to retain the historic character of the building whilst discreetly incorporating the best modern services and to provide a great sense of contemporary style.

  • Our third stay at this wonderful house

Posted by Our third stay at this wonderful house on 29/11/2017

This is our third stay at this beautiful house. As ever, the housekeepers gave us a warm welcome and presented a spotlessly clean house. It is extremely well equipped (two dishwashers, three fridges, etc etc) and as warm as toast. The internal layout is great for family gatherings and for house parties of all sorts. The location too is amazing, with views and walks in all directions. Absolutely brilliant.

  • Great big group (with lots of children) house!

    Created on 30/08/2017

Just spent a great week in Heatherside House with 10 adults and 13 kids! Unfortunately the weather was distinctly british beach weather so we couldn't really take advantage of the lovely garden area but we had a fantastic week visiting the beaches.
House was spacious enough to cope with all 23 of us and the kids loved the inside space. Everything that we needed was provided with plenty of crockery etc
Just to note that due to the tides - although there was one beach for close by it was actually of little use as the tide was high during the middle of the day for the whole week - Bude was however about 25 mins away so we went there instead.

  • Perfect in every way!

    Created on 31/12/2016

A huge thank you Anthony and all at Heatherside House for what was an incredible weekend away. What a perfect house and setting for our annual Christmas gathering. The whole set up was by far the best we have experienced in the 10 years we have been doing this. And to think it nearly all didn't happen! So thank you once again for being so accommodating in our "hour of need" and making our celebrations definitely one to remember! We'll definitely be back.

  • Magical and memorable family Christmas

Posted by Wall Group on 03/01/2015

We had the most fabulous Christmas – almost the whole family from ages 4 to 78, and the time just flew by. Christmas Eve we dressed for dinner, canapés and champagne by the log fire, then dinner by candlelight around that huge table in the dining room. Christmas Day was a really relaxed affair – presents round the tree, a treasure hunt (ideal house for that) and silly family games. The children of all ages loved the games room and the barn, and the cooks gloried in the huge kitchen. A real old-fashioned Christmas, with lots of photos to aid our memories for years to come.
Things we particularly liked though were: the huge centre work surface in the kitchen, with TWO dishwashers, the courtesy lighting in the skirting upstairs, the boot room (VERY useful), lots of fridge space, and lots of logs for the log fire.
Many thanks for all your help throughout our preparations, and best wishes for for next year.

  • Best New Year ever

Posted by claire bendall on 16/05/2013

We managed to use every single facility except the croquet lawn (monsoon) Best New Year ever.
Sports barn makes this the best house I've ever stayed in.
This has been an amazing Christmas. Even managed to squeeze in 2 surfing trips, in the "Baltic" sea. Great place to play real life Cluedo!

  • Christmas 2012

Posted by Lucy Duncan on 28/12/2012

The most fabulous place for Christmas. For the first time ever we were glad of the lousy weather as there was so much in the house to keep us occupied. All from ages 18 to 88 declared it the best Christmas ever with the sports barn a definite highlight!
The house itself could not have been better designed or more fully equipped.
The surroundings were beautiful ad the 10 minute walk to the cliffs was beautiful even in monsoonal rain.
We now want to come again in summer!

  • Spoilt in every way....

    High Praise in Rhyme!
Heatherside is a sight to behold,
Lovingly renovated much history does it hold.
Families visit and admire the coast a beautiful scene,
A place to relax a great joy it has been,
The games barn is a plus, loose energy, have fun,
Back to the house for food, the dining is second to none.
Visit the local spa if you can, it truly is a treat,
I opted for reflexology, an indulgence focused on the feet.
We celebrated a family silver wedding and were spoilt in every way.
A return visit would be highly recommended one would say.

  • A very special venue..

Posted by Anon User on 20/11/2012

…where to begin with a stay and an experience which just seamlessly worked so well. Yes, the weather God’s also smiled on us such that the latter part of Sunday afternoon was spent by most of us sitting out in the deck chairs facing the setting sun..it was an incredible week-end weather wise and we really could not speak highly enough of the whole experience. The house works on so many levels and we were formerly resident in the Far East and have already mentioned it (Heatherside House) to that many people that hopefully some bookings from over there might materialize in the future!
We were very appreciative of your patience with our booking and how accommodating you were.
I honestly looked at the Croquet Lawn when we visited the property and thought, ‘well that will be too wet or damp and will not get any use’…oh how wrong I was! The ladies who cooked were great, the food very good indeed and really this is, as I am aware you already know, a very special venue..we all had the best week-end possible, with the laser clays also being a lot of fun.
Whilst we were blessed with one of the best week-end's weather for summer, let alone that is was autumn, our three days at Heatherside House were quite simply brilliant.
Every aspect of our stay from the venue itself to the in house caterers and including the arranged activity of laser clay's worked perfectly.
Heatherside House is simply an outstanding venue for all ages to enjoy each other's company for a few days and to celebrate any special event.

  • House & situation even better than in the photo's

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

The house and the weekend were absolutely fabulous - we really appreciated the warm welcome from Savannah, the lit fire and the beautifully laid table. The weather was on our side so we were able to walk on Friday and much more extensively on Saturday, before settling into a gorgeous meal and then interrupting our digestive process with our own version of 5 a side table tennis and dancing in the barn. The house and the situation were better even than the photographs, and the layout lead to very easy ebb and flow of groups through the weekend.

  • The weekend was an outstanding success

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

The House is superb for our sort of event with both the games room and the games barn wonderful for Children of all ages. The activities were first class; the riding, laser shooting, gambling and surfing were much better fun than I expected and very well organised. The two massage girls were very good.
    The food was excellent.
You even managed two days without rain !!

  • An AMAZING stay

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

Just contacting you to say we had the most AMAZING stay at Heatherside House. What a beautiful property, and it far outdid our expectations by a long way. I simply cannot believe we were so so lucky to have found it!
Your patience with us throughout was way more than appreciated and I simply cannot thank you and all of your staff enough.
Anyway, a HUGE thank you once again.

  • Awesome weekend!

Thanks for an absolutely awesome weekend. Heatherside House was everything I hoped it would be and more. I was also very impressed with how well the kitchen etc was equipped.

  • Fell in love with Heatherside House

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

Everyone had an amazing time in Devon and fell in love with Heatherside House. It really was the perfect venue and location. Even the mixed weather played to our advantage as we had a bit of everything! We were all very sorry to leave after what was an amazing weekend.
The horse riding was a lot of fun and the girls who looked after us made sure everyone had a good ride, including the novices as well as the more expert riders.
The murder mystery was very good. We had four actors who had to drive home in the middle of some rather horrendous weather, but it set the scene for the evening and they did a great job in getting everyone involved.
The catered black tie dinner was delicious and provided a superb official dinner for my 40th birthday celebrations.
So - we have some wonderful memories for what was a very special occasion. So thank you and the team for helping to make it possible.

  • Wow and Thank you

Posted by Anonymous User on 20/09/2012

Heatherside House is a very special place and we had such a wonderful time. Not only is the property and location quite something but it has been done up beautifully and we wanted for nothing. We felt very lucky being able to stay there and the entire team has given very positive feedback. It was difficult to get them all to leave!
We'll definitely be in touch when we're planning our team event next year - I've already got my eye on Wellington Manor, one of their other properties!
