Overview
Great Fulford has remained in the same family for some 800 years, and during that time the house has seen its fair share of additions and improvements, though the medieval bones of the house still lurk under the additional plaster and panelling.
A stay at Great Fulford is a truly intriguing and eye-opening experience, where you can revel in the glories of a bygone world in the heart of beautiful rural Devon. It's a holiday like no other (not least because of your hosts!) and a true glimpse into what life in an English country house is really like.

What you should know…
- It's in a fairly remote location - you'll need to drive
- Four dogs live on-site
- Some of the decor does need updating
Property Features
Within Great Fulford's main house are eight double bedrooms, each of which comes with their own private bathroom. Internally, Great Fulford boasts a suite of grand interconnecting entertainment rooms, which give it the unique ability to host a large party without the expense of a marquee.
It also has the advantage of thick internal walls enabling loud music to be played without disturbing those in the surrounding rooms.
The Great Hall, where the panelling dates from the early 16th century, is entered directly from the courtyard, and can seat up to a hundred people. It's perfect for big parties or a wedding feast.
The Great Staircase
Leaving the Great Hall, you enter a gigantic room which soars to the full height of the house and houses the Great Staircase, a truly grand late 17th century feature.
The Ball Room
Entered through a carved 17th century oak doorway, the Ballroom boasts a glorious ceiling recently completed by the renowned sculptor, Geoffrey Preston.
The Great Parlour
Turning right just before the foot of the Great Stairs leads you into the Great Parlour, a late 17th century panelled room which measures at approximately 600 sq. feet.
The Ante Room
This room is fantastic for late night drinks. Alternatively, opening the double doors in to the Great Parlour creates space for seating up to 120 people.
This picturesque and romantic country estate has played host to many happy occasions over many centuries. There is a charm about Great Fulford that you won't find in a hotel or more commercial building.
The property is licensed to hold wedding ceremonies for civil marriages and the registration of civil partnerships in the Ballroom, the Great Parlour and outside in the garden in the Gothic Summerhouse.
Or if you need more space, the house can be easily joined with a marquee to accommodate very large party numbers.
Location
About the surrounding area of Great FulfordGreat Fulford is an historic estate in the parish of Dunsford in Devon.
The grade-I listed manor house is situated a short drive from Exeter, and while the present mansion house is Tudor (16th century) with refurbishing from the late 17th century and further re-modelling from about 1800, the site itself dates back to medieval times, with the Fulford family living on the estate for some 800 years, at least since the reign of King Richard I (1189-1199). There are thus few, if any families in Devonshire of more ancient recorded origin still resident at their original seat, and now they're opening their doors and welcoming in those who want to partake in the idiosyncrasies of English country life.
