Every child wants a summer birthday, complete with beach barbecues, water parks and sun-filled holidays – and the knowledge that you’ll never have to go to school on your big day. With a winter birthday it can be difficult to know how to make things special, so we’ve put together an Oliver’s Travels guide to creating magical memories.

Highland Fling

Urquhart Castle

Whether your child wants to be Cinderella or Harry Potter, Loch Castle is the perfect place to let their imagination run wild. Set on the banks of beautiful Loch Ness, this castle comes straight out of a Gothic fairytale – and with 15 bedrooms there’s plenty of room for family and friends. When the kids tire of waiting for Nessie to surface, try organising a tour with Around Loch Ness, a company specialising in tailor-made and intimate tours of the area with local guides. On returning to the castle, allow the catering team to provide you with a magical birthday meal to end your child’s special day on a high.

For a more intimate castle experience, check out Shirehorse Castle in Yorkshire. With battlements and arrow slits, this five-bedroom home is a life-sized film set on which kids can act out their every dream. Expect plenty of games involving knights, elves, royalty and evil witches here – and if rather more modern entertainment is required, the castle’s indoor swimming pool will be happy to provide it. If you’re planning an extended holiday stay, you can organise day trips out to Yorkshire’s many attractions – Eureka! National Children’s Museum is just four miles away.

Chateau Merveilleux

C16 Chateau Normandy - Oliver's Travels

Our castles to rent aren’t limited to the UK, so for a truly memorable treat, why not whisk your party away to France? The Chateau Normand is located conveniently close to Cherbourg, making it easy to jump on a ferry and sail away for a brilliant birthday. The chateau itself is split into self-sufficient apartments so that each family can enjoy some alone time, while spacious communal rooms and grounds ensure that everyone can come together for meals and celebrations. The swing set and playhouse in the gardens will keep younger children happy, while older kids will love racing around the ancient turrets and outdoor paddocks – complete with donkeys and horses!
