Best Food Experiences in Mallorca

Mallorcan cuisine shares many influences with Spain – pork, olive oil, garlic and peppers are all staples. The island’s chefs are understandably passionate about their produce, and have set themselves to taking Mallorcan cooking into a new era. Two of our top picks are fine dining at Santi Taura, and the colourful vegetarian creations of Bon Lloc. Meanwhile, countless traditional local restaurants fly the flag for hearty, unreconstructed dishes – we’re fans of Celler da Premsa, below – and the winding streets of Palma’s old town offer a feast of local tapas plates to accompany an evening’s bar-hopping.

So, without further ado, here are the best food experiences in Mallorca!

1. Wine Route cycling tour with Bicillevant

If you’re travelling with a group of wine lovers, you’ll love this bracing, informative trip through the wine country in the foothills of the Tramuntana range. Cycling instead of walking allows you to cover plenty of ground, starting in the historic wine town of Inca, then visiting Sencelles, Santa Eugenia, Santa Maria, Consell and finally Binissalem, the heart of a small region that is one of Mallorca’s two official DO areas. You’ll get a winery visit and tasting thrown in, and you can also add on a typical winery lunch in Inca. The six-hour trip is run by Bicillevant, one of our favourite bike tour companies.

Location: Ses Sivines, 3 Portocolom, Mallorca

2. Cooking lessons with mymuybueno

If you’re looking for passion for Mallorcan and Spanish food, look no further than this family company, run by couple Justine and Paul Murphy. Justine comes with years of experience cooking on super yachts, and combines a deep appreciation of local food with technical skills that have been tested by some of the world’s most demanding clients. Who better to organise a Mallorcan food masterclass? Justine’s team of chefs can provide bespoke courses at your villa, so whether you’re looking to sharpen up a particular skill or just learn how to get the best out of local produce, they’ll be able to tailor a private session for you. It’s a fun, rewarding way for a group of foodies to spend the day – and the results are delicious too, some of the best food in Mallorca!

3. A private feast with Private Cooking Mallorca

Looking for an extra-special evening in? Private Cooking Mallorca is a private chef service run by Caroline Fabian, who comes with experience in fine hotels and restaurants on several continents, as well as at Es Racó d´es Teix, one of Mallorca’s most celebrated restaurants. For the ultimate in indulgence, book her tasting menu – available for 2-6 people – which is packed with elegant, inventive takes on classic Mallorcan produce. Alternatively, plan a larger group event – Caroline offers Mediterranean barbecues, paella show cooking and tapas nights for groups of 12-35. And if you need a longer-term private chef, she has a range of extended catering packages too.

4. Vegetarian gastronomy at Bon Lloc

We featured Bon Lloc in our blog on the most vegetarian friendly countries, so you can tell we’re big fans. Sticking to its guns since 1978, this fun, inventive restaurant in Palma’s old town passionately believes that veggie and vegan dishes can pack as much taste and imagination as their meat-based rivals. The great-value lunches consist of fresh, high-energy juices, salads, soups and pasta dishes, but it’s by night that things get really interesting – with the help of Toni Rodriguez from Barcelona’s Lujuria Vegana, Bon Lloc has developed a ‘vegan haute cuisine’ menu that’s full of flavour and surprises, and comes beautifully presented.

Price range: ££

Location: Carrer de Sant Feliu, 7, 07012 Palma de Mallorca

5. Fine dining at Santi Taura

Situated in the heart of the charming town of Lloseta, this restaurant is named after the ambitious young chef who created it. Mallorcan through and through, he’s famous for bringing modern flair to traditional dishes and ingredients – this is fine dining that has stayed true to its roots. The tasting menu changes weekly, and offers diners three starters, a fish dish, a meat dish and a dessert, with an optional cheese course (there is no a la carte menu, so let them know in advance if you have any allergies or special requirements). There’s much to be said for Palma’s glitzy fine dining scene, but Santi Taura feels more relaxed, partly thanks to the semi-rural location. If you want ingenious twists on Mallorcan food, this is the place.

Location: C/ Joan Carles I, 48, 07360, Lloseta, Mallorca

6. World-class wine at Macia Batle

Bodegas Macia Batle has been crafting wine in Santa Maria del Camí – part of the Binissalem DO region – since 1856. The tour runs year-round, albeit with a reduced schedule in winter, and is picturesque as well as fascinating; Macia Batle’s vines, dominated by traditional varieties such as manto negro, grow in the shadow of the Tramuntana range, protected by dry stone walls. By contrast, the winemaking facility contains state-of-the-art equipment that knowledgeable, English-speaking guides will talk you through. Most importantly of all, you get to try four of the winery’s award-winning wines with complimentary deli snacks. Cheers!

7. Traditional fare at Celler da Premsa

You’ve had Mallorcan fine dining. You’ve had a cooking lesson. You’ve even had a private feast. But what about trying simple, hearty local food in a traditional restaurant? For that, we love Palma’s ever-popular Celler da Premsa. Open since the 50s, it’s a large but rustic space with wooden tables and big wine barrels along the wall. It’s the perfect place sample classic dishes like sobrasada, the traditional spicy sausage, or frito Mallorquin, a hash of lambs’ liver, potato and peppers. And of course you can wash it all down with fantastic local wines.

8. The best of traditional Mallorcan food at Flanigan

Since the late 1980s, Flanigan in Puerto Portals has offered locals and visitors alike fantastically fresh seafood and a choice of sampling it in a range of Mallorcan cooking styles. Though there’s meat, pasta and veggie dishes to choose from too the choice of fish and shellfish is astounding, with dishes including lobster fideua (similar to paella, but with noodles instead of rice), salt-crust sea bass and croquettes made with baby squid.
