Situated on the hillside in the midst of the beautiful Andalusian countryside, Villa Bougainvillea enjoys a peaceful setting with a number of trails nearby to explore the wonderful landscape. A short drive away, the charming village of Gaucin is a typical rural settlement, with winding streets and traditional whitewashed houses adorned with colourful pots and flowers. Spend the morning exploring the medieval layout and stop by the ancient ruins at the Castillo del Aguila to enjoy a panoramic view over the surrounding area. Despite its size, Gaucin has a number of notable restaurants where you can sample some of the region's delicious cuisine. La Fructosa is a locally-owned affair, whilst Michelin-star Platero & Co boasts a wonderful terrace and weekly changing menu offering up wonderful seasonal plates inspired by fresh produce from the mountains nearby.

Whilst charming in itself, Gaucin sits on the western side of the magnificent Serranía de Ronda and is also regarded as the gateway to the national park. Filled with a wonderful array of flora and fauna, the vast natural area has plenty of well-marked trails that are easily accessible and invite you to explore the diverse landscape. Opt for a more challenging hike and follow a route up to one of the mountain summits, or head just 45 minutes to the north to visit the town of Ronda. An important cultural centre during Islamic rule, the historic settlement is divided by a dramatic gorge, which you can admire from the Puente Nueve that towers a staggering 120m above the canyon floor. Take a walk through the cobbled streets to discover the religious architecture and visit the elegantly decorated Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor before heading to the town square, where you can sit with a drink and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.

Los Alcornocales national park sits just a short drive to the west, with a succession of rugged mountains and sloping hills that play host to the largest mass of cork oak on the Iberian Peninsula. The area is popular with hikers and bird watchers, or for a more adventurous day out, you can choose from a selection of outdoor activities such as mountaineering or horseback riding.

Alternatively, for those looking to enjoy Andalucia's wonderful coastline, the beach is less than an hour's drive away, making it easy to spend the day beside the sea. La Chullera is the closest beach, whilst slightly to the north, the popular San Pedro Playa offers a long stretch of golden sand. There are various options for water sports, as well as a handful of chiringuitos where you can escape the heat and enjoy a lunchtime snack or ice cream.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
I have owned the property now for 4 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
This property has got the most incredible views in Europe, coming with that are the tranquillity of being in the largest protected cork forest of Europe.

Do you have a favourite room in the property?
The kitchen is my favourite room because I can look at Africa while washing up from the height of the house, 3000 feet up.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?
My favourite time is relaxing at the villa and feeling part of nature. Within half an hour you have beautiful places to visit, like Ronda to the North and the Mediterranean beaches to the South. My favourite mission is to pop over to the stunning Wind Swept beaches of Tarifa for the day.

Really eat?
Gaucín has got first class supermarkets with everything one could wish for as well as many fine local and international restaurants. The finest food to eat in the mountains is the Iberico Jamon. Also there is a fresh fish market in Gaucín with wonderful Spanish fruits and vegetables!

Really see?
Ronda, Marbella, Tarifa and Sotogrande are beautiful places to see and visit. There are also many beautiful local typical Spanish mountain villages that are worth visiting and enjoying.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
I would say, bring books and music to enjoy the incredible home. You don’t need much else because the villa is of a first class standard with an incredible atmosphere by itself.

  • This was a wonderful stay!

    on 30/10/2023

This was a wonderful stay! The property is in a spectacular location, beautifully maintained and equipped, and overall provides an unforgettable experience. The house manager Linda was an excellent communicator and most welcoming and helpful. We cannot recommend Villa Bougainvillea highly enough and would happily return any time.

  • A Spectacular Holiday!

    on 04/10/2023

We had the most amazing 3 weeks at Villa Bougainvillea and are still missing those spectacular views 10 days later.
Linda was exceptionally helpful from the point of booking through to the completion of our holiday.
The house is beautiful and extremely well equipped. Beds very comfortable, including the sofa bed. There is not a poor bedroom which is unusual. All very comfortable with great showers in each. We didn’t spend much time indoors as the outdoor areas are fabulous. Various terraces and always possible to find shade somewhere.
We had a cross-section of ages from 5 months to 78 years and everyone loved the house, garden, pool and views.
We have stayed at around 15 houses in the Gaucin area over the years. Most have been lovely but needed a bit of TLC. Poorly equipped, fridges not cold enough etc. Villa Bougainvillea is completely up to speed and everything works. There is even an ice machine in the freezer.
The big question: Would we return?
A huge YES. We booked for next year before leaving. This will be the first time we have ever returned to a rental property. Villa Bougainvillea really is a very special place.

  • A fabulous holiday at Villa Bougainvillea!

    on 25/08/2022

We have just returned home after a fabulous holiday at Villa Bougainvillea! The luxury villa was very spacious and well equipped with everything we needed. When we did decide to leave the amazing pool and it's incredible views we didn't have to venture out too far to find something to do. Ronda is a beautiful town and we would highly recommend a visit. Also the town of Gaucin is just a 10 min drive from the villa with fabulous restaurants - though I would recommend booking in advance. Also in Gaucin is a wonderful deli called Bonissim that again we'd highly recommend.

  • A wonderful two weeks at Villa Bougainvillea!

    on 03/06/2022

We've recently returned from a wonderful two weeks at Villa Bougainvillea. Linda and her team did a fantastic job of making our holiday one to remember and were always on hand to answer any questions. The fridge broke down during our first week, but an engineers visit was swiftly arranged, a temporary replacement sourced and normal service seamlessly resumed.

The location is simply stunning, with amazing views as far a North Africa on clear days. The villa is a 2-minute drive from the main road, in the most peaceful forest location. No light or noise pollution to disturb - the relaxed vibe was never interrupted.

The village of Gaucin is around a 10-minute drive away (a car is absolutely essential here) and we found everything we needed in the village supermarket. There is also a wonderful bakery, Bonissim, run by two lovely Scottish ladies who, as well as breads, pastries, cakes etc. also produce home-cooked meals to takeaway. There are also some great restaurants in the town, but I would recommend booking as evenings are busy. The coast is around 40 minutes drive and we enjoyed a few days on the beach at Sotogrande and visited the Sunday market at Estepona but, to be honest, we rarely wanted to leave the villa.

Thanks again to all the team, for such a memorable holiday!

  • Wow!

    on 27/10/2019

Wow! Bouganvillea was easily the most beautiful vacation home we have stayed at.

The house is stunning- well appointed, with high quality, beautifully maintained interiors. Outside is wonderful- grilling in a colonnaded courtyard while gazing across the perfect pool, through the mountains to Gibraltar beyond.

Thanks to Linda for a warm welcome: we will be back!

  • Simply beautiful

    on 31/08/2019

Villa Bouganvillea is situated in a lovely Pueblo Blanca in the mountains from Estepona & only 1.5 hour drive from Malaga Airport. It has stunning views of the coastline, Gibtraltar & Africa in the background. Well located from many beautiful beaches along the Atlantic Coastline & also The Costa Del Sol. You can enjoy a wonderful quite mountain stay with only a short drive to nearby beaches & amazing views. You can also fly into Gibraltar airport as an option too.

The property is situated about 10 mins outside of Gaucin towards Ronda which is an amazing town to visit for a day trip, only 45 mins drive from the property. Sevilla is a 2 hour drive away, the capital of Andalucía & the home of flamenco. It’s an amazing cultural Spanish experience worth having, to see for your own eyes, the beautiful architecture in the old town. A day trip to Cadiz is also worth a mention. Tarifa is not far from there which is a lovely coastal town famous for surfing & windsurfing.

Villa Bouganvillea is simply beautiful in all respects. The house is a classic & stunning style large Spanish Villa with a gorgeous infinity edge swimming pool around a large open view terrace. The house has 2 large bedrooms on the lower floor, lovely kitchen with sweeping views out to Africa. A huge dining room & very cosy lounge room with fireplace. The main bedroom is upstairs next to a very spacious bathroom. There is another bathroom downstairs between the 2 bedrooms. This leads out to a wonderful terrace perfect for outdoor dining & barbeques. There is also an upper sunroof from the terrace with a gorgeous view as well. If you walk down from the dining terrace to the pool area you will find yet another huge room that is perfect for extra guests staying. There is another toilet & shower & lovely sitting area with table that looks out over the pool. A large king size bed & cosy lounge for relaxing.

My family has stayed several times at Bouganvillea & it was nothing short of amazing. We have slept in all 3 bedrooms apart from the main one. They are all beautiful, comfortable & spacious. The whole atmosphere of the property is peaceful, relaxing & a luscious environment that truly makes it an enjoyable break away in classic Spanish Countryside. We would highly recommend this beautiful & stunning villa to any future potential guests.

  • Amazing stay

    on 24/07/2019

It seems a life time ago but the week before last we spent yet another truly amazing stay at Villa Bouganvillea. From the moment you arrive and start to absorb the stunning scenery and the fabulous interiors of this villa, you are immediately in relaxation mode. The views are breathtaking with Gibraltar and North Africa in the distance. Despite being a holiday rental, this villa is so homely with a superbly equipped kitchen. The bedrooms and bathrooms are perfect. The view from the bedroom above the main kitchen is fantastic and we’ve been lucky to stay in that particular room twice! The infinity pool is stunning (despite us filling it with more inflatables than necessary

  • Stunning Villa

    on 12/07/2019

I can't believe only a week ago we arrived back from our beautiful holiday at Villa Bouganvillea , and WOW what a place! We were welcomed by the owner Jack, who kindly showed us around his stunning villa. We had everything we needed and much much more. It was a home from home and we couldn't wait to enjoy our stay there.

Villa Bouganvillea has 2 double bedrooms on the ground floor with ensuites, lounge , dining room , sitting room, kitchen - diner and a w.c. On the first floor is the master bedroom with a large ensuite with a HUGE bath. The kids loved their bath time ! On the lower ground floor (pool level) is the seperate entrance to the annex which has a large bed , sofa bed , dining table and a wet room. The villa has lots of social spaces to enjoy together or alone. The large patio area was a great place to spend together as a group with the stunning views over the mountains when dining.

Gaucin town is a very quiet , splendid, quaint town. Full of Spanish and English residents. Everyone is very friendly here and you have all you need. There is a supermarket, pharmacy, bank, petrol station , small toy shop. They have 5 restaurants and 5 bars which i highly recommend booking in advance. On the outskirts of town they have a little kids play area where there are ducks, rabbits and birds. With only less than 5 minutes drive to the villa you have all you need to hand. I highly recommend a company called Bonissim and speak with Janice and Anne. They make homemade food to collect such as , Thai chicken curry (not spicy) beef lasagne, pork stirfry, beef tagine, marinated chicken legs, sticky Chinese aubergine, pea & asparagus quiche, scotch eggs, savoury tarts, Greek salad, butterbean salad, coleslaw, roast veg and much more. We found there sevices very professional and the food is to die for. Such a great idea and it was ideal for us with having a young family.

The drive from Malaga airport was only 1 hour 20 and it was a pretty drive through the mountains. We came across 3 toll bridges which cost 11 euros in total.

Overall we loved our stay here and would like to think were be back again with other family members.
A big Thank you to Linda who manages the villa and the stay for the guest. She was always happy to help via email and on our stay and gave me alot of peace of mind before we arrived. We were given prompt details of how to find the Villa. Linda and her husband both teach thi chi and although we didn't get a chance to take advantage of there services due to the children , i still think it would be such a nice thing to do on a relaxing holiday like this.

Thank you to you all for letting us stay at your beautiful home and experiencing life in the villa. We all loved it very much.

Best of luck to the future.
    Sammy and the Crew x

  • Totally MAGICAL

    on 19/05/2019

45 mins WEST OF MARBELLA, up in the hills, a stones throw from London. Super easy access and idilic views of Africa! The amazing little village of Gaucín a couple of km’s away

  • The most amazing villa!

    on 09/05/2017

Villa Bougainvillea is simply stunning, once you arrive at the entrance you feel instantly relaxed. The elevated position of this villa allows the most incredible views over the surrounding mountains and countryside and you are only a short drive to the hilltop village of Gaucin.
The interiors have been stylishly designed to create a really homely and comfortable villa. I especially loved the snug TV room with large comfy sofas and a stunning fireplace - the ideal place to relax and shelter from the midday sun. The kitchen was also gorgeous - you can even admire the views whilst doing the washing up! Each bedroom benefits from private ensuite bathrooms with careful attention to detail showing with amazing showers.
We absolutely loved the outdoor space that this villa provided. With various terraces to relax on, the private swimming pool and marvellous surrounding views. An added benefit was the outdoor kitchen where we enjoyed cooking up a feast on the barbecue and enjoying some drinks whilst we watched the sun down.
I would 100% recommend Villa Bougainvillea to anyone looking for a truly special and tranquil villa holiday, it has everything and more we could have asking for and I will definitely be returning!!!
