Featuring a large outdoor pool as its centrepiece, Villa Arnassica’s terrace has a seating area right outside the house, as well as a covered dining area with barbecue – a charming spot for meals in the sun. A hammock, parasol and sun loungers ensure there’s always somewhere you can chill out in comfort. There is also a large lawn area which is perfect for children to play on.

Inside, the villa has an impressively designed open-plan living area. In cool white, this air-conditioned space offers lots of seating, a Smart TV, dining area and a well-equipped kitchen, and opens out onto the terrace. You have all you need with a dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer and more, plus there’s free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

The house can comfortably accommodate up to seven guests. There are three double bedrooms, each with a Smart TV and air conditioning. There are two more bathrooms, and space for the seventh guest on the sofa-bed in the living area.

Superbly stylish, Villa Arnassica is conveniently located for both the airport, only 5km away, and the island’s capital city. Rhodes Town’s many attractions are around twenty minutes’ drive away, among them the medieval Old Town and the Palace of the Grand Masters.

Numerous beaches are within easy reach too. As well as Ialyssos, a popular water-sports destination, you have nearby Ixia and Rhodes’ Elli Beach to discover, with many more as you travel further south. Among the island’s must-visit landmarks are the Lindos Acropolis, around one hour away, and the beautiful Valley of the Butterflies, about twenty-five minutes from Ialyssos. Filerimos Monastery, a local favourite, is just ten minutes from your villa.

Rhodes’ capital city – also called Rhodes – occupies the island’s north-eastern corner and is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Among its must-sees is the Palace of the Grand Masters, a huge medieval castle, a good proportion of which is open to visitors. With a long and eventful history that even included a spell as Mussolini’s holiday home, it now hosts a museum and various events and performances throughout the year.

Just down the road, you have Mandraki Port, Elli Beach and the Colossus of Rhodes memorial, while the Street of the Knights is another one not to miss if you’re a history lover. If you’re looking for shops and restaurants, the city has its modern side too, with plenty of both in the Mandraki area.

Down the coast from Rhodes town, you’ll find lots of family fun in Faliraki. While better known for its nightlife, the resort is great for kids with its well-organised beach and big water-park. At the height of summer, it’s one of the hottest spots on the island. To the south, the idyllic Anthony Quinn Bay tempts with its crystal clear waters and is a popular snorkelling spot.

More beaches such as Afantou, Traganou, Archangelos and Agathi lie along the east coast. Said to be the nicest beach on the island, Tsampika is worth a special mention, while Lindos is especially popular. This could well be due to its proximity to the Lindos Acropolis, a stunning clifftop landmark with even more stunning views.

You’ll need to carry on to the island’s southern tip to reach Prasonisi, but it’s worth it. This beach is popular with surfers and kite-surfers, but you don’t need to be sporty to appreciate it – laidback beach bars are a good place to lap up the view of the Aegean.

Rhodes is big on natural beauty, so don’t miss the other big-name attractions – the Valley of the Butterflies and the Epta Piges (Seven Springs) are both unforgettable and supremely photogenic. Also worth a visit is the blissfully chilled seaside spa, Kallithea Springs, found between Rhodes and Faliraki – views to die for included.

Rhodes is certainly heritage-rich, and you’ll find places of interest all over the island. Near Ialyssos, Filerimos Hill is home to a fascinating Byzantine monastery, while Rhodes’ medieval Old Town is full of Gothic churches, mosques and monuments. With around 200 streets and alleys, it’s certainly a labyrinth, but getting lost is the best way to see it. On the island’s western side, look out for the ruins of Kritinia Castle and the ancient town of Kameiros.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

With its amazing outdoor pool and terrace, the kids are going to love Villa Arnassica. There’s plenty of room to play, both inside and out, and with Smart TVs in every bedroom, plus Wi-Fi, there is all they need for entertainment. Not forgetting those incredible beaches in all directions.

There’s a lot to see around the island too. The Farma of Rhodes is great for animal-loving younger children – they can pet and feed animals like lemurs, llamas and even camels. The Valley of the Butterflies is a 600-acre nature reserve with a restaurant and a natural history museum, as well as lots of woodland areas. It’s ideal for a family picnic or a walk, and if you happen to be there when the butterflies emerge into the valley, you’re in for an even bigger treat.

The island’s big water park is in Faliraki. Simply called ‘WaterPark’, you’ll find rides and slides for all ages there. An aquarium and the Kartodrome go-karting track are among the resort’s other family attractions, along with the Astronomy Café in nearby Apollonos. Stargazers will love the observatory dome and the atmosphere as night falls.

In Rhodes Town, there are familiar shops, cafés, multiple cinemas, the lovely Elli Beach and the peaceful Rodini Park, the oldest landscaped park in the world. Near Elli Beach, the Rhodes Aquarium will fascinate those interested in marine life, while insect fans will love the Bee Museum of Rhodes, about 15 minutes’ drive outside the town.

Further south, not far from the famous waterfalls of the Epta Piges, you’ll find Rhodes Toy Museum, an eclectic collection of toys, games and collectibles that are sure to make you feel nostalgic for decades gone by. It’s worth making a day of it and visiting Epta Piges too, where the kids can swim in the lake, brave the underground tunnel, and dine in the waterside restaurant.

Many of the island’s beaches offer good facilities for families, and often water-sports too. South of Faliraki, Anthony Quinn Bay is a favoured snorkelling spot, while the main resort has a much bigger and very well-equipped beach of its own. Quieter choices include Agathi and pretty St Paul’s Bay in Lindos.

Be sure to check out Rhodes’ castles, found all over the island. Feraklos, Monolithos and Kritinia are among those with beautiful sea views. Rhodes Town has even more of historic interest – the Roloi Clock Tower, Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Masters should spark the imagination of history-loving kids. If they’re into archaeology, the ancient city of Kameiros is one not to miss – the ruins offer a spectacular coastal view too.
