A traditional small town, Lefkimmi is located in the southern part of Corfu. Surrounded by countryside, Lefkimmi hasn’t been developed for tourism and retains an old-school charm. A river runs through the town which offers a selection of restaurants and cafés, good places to try some authentic cuisine.

Local buses connect Lefkimmi to Corfu Town, one of the highlights of the island. While Lefkimmi feels unmistakably Greek, Corfu Town owes much of its character to the nations who controlled it at one time or another.

There is certainly an Italianate feel to the Old Town, while the chic café terraces of the Liston may even call to mind Paris – it was indeed built by the French. A period of British rule is credited with the curious popularity of cricket on Corfu; you may find a game going on at Spianada Square.

The Palace of St Michael and St George is a Neoclassical mansion built for the British High Commissioner in the early 19th century, which is now home to the Museum of Asian Art. Pay a visit to see works originating from Japan, China and India, among others. It’s worth going just for the café as this has a wonderful view out to sea in the direction of Albania. Other cultural highlights in town include the Municipal Gallery, Archaeological Museum and Byzantine Museum.

Corfu is big on churches, with more than 40 of them in the local area. You will probably spot the red dome of Saint Spyridon Church rising above the town. Other high points include the Venetian-built fortresses which have wonderful views over much of the island. You can walk up to the top of the Old Fortress in about 20 minutes, although the cobbled slope can be slippery, so choose your footwear accordingly.

Complete with a Victorian bandstand, water features and manicured lawns, Spianada Park is a nice spot for chilling out after you’ve exerted yourself. The largest square in Greece, the Spianada leads down to the seafront and is right by the covered café terrace of the Liston.

Other notable landmarks include the palace of Mon Repos, the birthplace of the late Duke of Edinburgh, and the grand Achillion. Built as a summer palace for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, this building stands in beautiful gardens.

Elsewhere, the island is full of unspoilt natural landscapes and wonderful beaches. The likes of Dassia, Paleokastritsa and Kavos – the latter only around 15 minutes’ drive from Lefkimmi – are reckoned to be amongst the best in Greece.

The Island/Getting There

One of the largest and greenest of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is far more than its trademark blue-hued seas and sandy coastline. With access to the beach in a matter of seconds, the children are going to love Villa Mare Sea. Add in the spacious gardens to play in the sun, and a house equipped with all the entertainment they love, and you have all the ingredients for the ideal family holiday.

Corfu has many more family-friendly beaches if you fancy venturing a little further. Many offer activities such as water-sports or boat trips along the coast, as well as good facilities. The popular resort of Palaiokastritsa on the west coast is home to the Corfu Aquarium, with displays of sea life, reptiles and even snakes. You can find it on Agios Petros beach.

Another great way to discover the marine wildlife of the Ionian Sea is a trip in a glass-bottomed boat, and other water-based activities like sailing and snorkelling are also easy to find. Island hopping is a fun way to get a change of scene, with boats heading out to Paxos, Sivota and other beautiful Ionian islands. One very easy boat trip you could try is to Corfu’s famous Mouse Island – it’s just a 5-minute crossing to the apparently rodent-shaped isle.

Aqualand water park is a big family favourite, packed with attractions like Lazy River, Fantasy Island and all sorts of slides and rides. Everyone can have a great time there, whatever their age – there are nice places to grab some food or take a rest too.

Corfu Town itself is a must-visit, and the kids are sure to be charmed by the laid-back feel of the Mediterranean-style Old Town. True to the Italian character of the place, it’s easy to grab a pizza or pasta at a family-friendly restaurant. You can also take an open-top bus tour to get to know the town’s many landmark sights, or just go and chill out in the pretty gardens of Spianada Square.

If they’re feeling energetic, take them up to the Old or New Fortress for a fantastic view over the island – then reward them with a treat at one of the sophisticated cafés on the Liston terrace.

The town has museums of art and archaeology which curious kids are sure to enjoy. Casa Parlante is a curiosity itself – an immersive museum which recreates old-time Corfu using smells, sounds, animated figures and such. Alternatively, check out a replica of a 1930s Corfiot village. Danilia Village, north west of Corfu Town, is not just a tourist attraction – it has also served as a TV and film set, notably for a James Bond movie and ITV series ‘The Durrells’.
