From the medieval capital in the north to the spectacular Prasonisi Beach in the south, Rhodes has some amazing experiences waiting for you. Full of fascinating history and idyllic countryside, it’s a great place for sightseeing, sports and outdoor activities.

On the north-eastern tip of the island, the capital city, Rhodes, is known for its architecturally impressive Old Town, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The Palace of the Grand Masters forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a section of the palace is open to the public. Live events and performances are regularly staged there, and the palace complex also hosts the interesting Archaeological Museum.

Despite all the history, Rhodes is very much a city of today, with a vibrant commercial centre and plenty of nightlife. The casino stays open late into the night, and there’s clubbing and lively bars on Orfanidou Street and, in the Old Town, Miltiadou Street. The city is packed with restaurants, and there’s more entertainment at the National Theatre and the city’s multiplex movie theatres.

Other attractions include the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the Marine Aquarium, located by the busy Elli Beach. There is also the pretty Rodini Park, said to be the oldest landscaped park in the world.

Down the coast from Rhodes, the resort of Faliraki offers family fun, with a well-organised beach and a large water-park. Other good choices for family days out include the fascinating Bee Museum of Rhodes, about 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre, and the solar-powered Toy Museum with its collection of Greek toys – it’s free to visit too.

The sheer number of beaches around the island will mean you are spoilt for choice. On the east coast are the likes of Lindos, Afantou, Archangelos and Agathi, while the stunning Prasonisi in the south attracts surfers and kite-surfers in large numbers.

Notable sights around the island include the iconic Lindos Acropolis, the ancient ruins of which are situated on the clifftop at Lindos and offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The village of Lindos is itself well worth a visit – as well as being beautiful, it has some of the best dining opportunities on the island, as well as laidback nightlife.

Rhodes’ natural beauty is particularly obvious at two of the island’s best-loved outdoor attractions. The Valley of the Butterflies is a charming area which fills with butterflies in summer, while the Epta Piges (Seven Springs) is a calming oasis with magnificent waterfalls and a lake – you can make your way from one to the other in around 35 minutes.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The youngest of the family have a lot to look forward to at Lakhania Maistros. With a large outdoor pool, it’s great for swimmers, and everyone can enjoy a meal outside from the barbecue. It’s comfortable inside too, with space to chill out with a movie or book, free Wi-Fi and satellite TV.

Rhodes is perfect for active kids, offering all sorts of sports and activities. They can try tennis, mini-golf, 5-a-side football, scuba-diving, or join you on a walk or cycle ride through beautiful areas of countryside.

When it comes to beaches, there are many which are a good choice for families. The likes of Kolymbia and Agathi are a bit quieter than places like Faliraki, while pretty Anthony Quinn Bay is good for snorkelling. Near Lindos, St Paul’s Bay is an idyllic spot, while Prasonisi is the beach of choice for water-sports lovers in the far south.

In Rhodes town, you’ll find Elli Beach close to all the action. It’s also right by the Marine Aquarium in the city’s Hydrobiological Station. Occupying the island’s northernmost spot, this aquarium is full of sea creatures and organisms, with octopuses, exotic fish, turtles and a whole lot more, and it’s made all the more interesting by the stone tunnels which house the exhibits. Similarly educational, the Astronomy Café brings astrotourism to Apollonos, just south of Faliraki. With an astronomy-themed garden and café, as well as an observatory, it’s a unique attraction.

Faliraki also has the fantastic WaterPark and Kartodrome – they can experience the fun of driving go-karts at this popular track. There’s even more to see and do in Rhodes city, with its huge range of shops and cafés, cinemas and the relaxing Rodini Park. About 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, you will also find the Bee Museum of Rhodes.

If you’re looking for a place you can all enjoy together, don’t miss Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs. At this stunning nature reserve, you can swim in the lake, or head into the woods for a picnic, as well as admire the amazing waterfalls.

The Valley of the Butterflies is also perfect for a family day out, especially in summer when the butterflies emerge into the valley en masse. Located close to the valley, the Farma of Rhodes lets kids get close to the animals – they can pet and feed creatures including kangaroos, ponies and llamas.

Another great part of a family holiday on Rhodes is the delicious food. Look out for sweet treats like galaktoboureko (custard-filled pastries) and loukoumadhes (honey and cinnamon doughnuts). You will have no trouble finding familiar favourites too, with many restaurants welcoming to, and often run by, families.
