A five-minute drive from the beach, Villa Mirtenis is a homely six-bedroom property in Ialysos. Situated at the bottom of Filerimos Hill, about twenty minutes from Rhodes’ eponymous capital city, this villa is the perfect base for a larger group – allowing up to fifteen people to enjoy its magnificent outdoor pool and terrace.

The honeycomb design of the private pool gives this villa an eye-catching centrepiece. Around the edge you have sun loungers and parasols, and there’s a barbecue and outdoor dining area alongside comfortable seating areas. A separate building beside the pool even houses a cosy bar which is great as an evening hangout.

Immaculately presented, the house itself features a spacious kitchen and dining area with seating for eight, enjoying direct access to the terrace. Comfortable lounges with sumptuous sofas and TV offer lots of relaxing space, and there’s a pool table with adjacent seating in the hall.

A sweeping staircase takes you to the upper level. Four spacious double bedrooms, with access to the upper terrace, offer supreme comfort. In addition, there is a twin bedroom and a single bedroom, both ideal for children, with a cot also available on request. A total of five bathrooms can be found at Villa Mirtenis, one of which has a bathtub.

The property also offers air conditioning, parking and free Wi-Fi. The upper terrace is furnished and overlooks the pool area, giving you the most amazing views of the verdant surroundings.

This villa is conveniently located just a ten-minute drive from the island’s airport, and a short walk from local amenities including shops, bars and restaurants. Ialysos Beach is a great place for water-sports, and only 900m from Villa Mirtenis. Nearby Filerimos Hill offers beautiful hiking and walking routes through pine forests and up the mountain, while all the attractions of Rhodes city are a short drive away.

You can explore the wonders of this UNESCO World Heritage Site with ease, including the Palace of the Grand Masters, Mandraki Harbour, Rodini Park and Elli Beach. Elsewhere around the island, you have areas of natural beauty like the Valley of the Butterflies and the Seven Springs, and stunning beaches such as Tsampika and Prasonisi.

The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes enjoys a wonderful Aegean outlook. Full of gorgeous countryside and amazing beaches, it delivers an unforgettable holiday and keeps visitors coming back for more.

In the north east of the island, you’ll find the capital. Also called Rhodes, it’s one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. The city is great for shopping and dining, and hosts attractions include the Museum of Modern Greek Art, the Marine Aquarium and National Theatre. The big hitter is the mighty Palace of the Grand Masters, with its impressive towers and battlements, which also features an Archaeological Museum, housed in the former Hospital of the Knights. You can visit parts of the inside of the palace too.

Other notable attractions are Elli Beach and the pretty Rodini Park, while a number of historic buildings surround the majestic Mandraki Harbour – perhaps the most glamorous way to enter the city. As befits a city of its status, Rhodes has the best developed nightlife scene on the island, with a huge casino and numerous bars and clubs. You’ll find no shortage of places to eat, with traditional Greek cuisine and seafood particularly well represented.

Head down the east coast and you will find countless beaches of various sizes and characters. Faliraki is big and bold and well equipped, while Anthony Quinn Bay is smaller, idyllic and perfect for a dip in the crystal clear waters. Head further still and there are gorgeous spots like Tsampika, Kolymbia and Agathi, while Prasonisi rounds things off at the southern tip of the island – a popular haunt of kite surfers and other water-sport enthusiasts.

Rhodes is ideal for sports of all kinds, with golf courses, tennis courts and scuba-diving centres, among its near-endless facilities. You don’t need to get competitive to get active, with excellent walking and cycling routes providing a fine way to enjoy some lesser-seen parts of the island.

The Valley of the Butterflies is one of Rhodes’ best-loved attractions, and well worth visiting – it lives up to its name in summer when you could find yourself surrounded by the creatures. About 35 minutes’ drive away, there are more natural wonders in the form of the Epta Piges, or Seven Springs.

Rhodes has some notable historic buildings all over the island, from monasteries to castle ruins, but few are as iconic as the Lindos Acropolis. Standing on the clifftop at a height of 116m, the views are as spectacular as the remains. Numerous other historic sights are found all around Lindos, so take the time to explore the village too. These days, it’s also known for its many rooftop restaurant terraces and upscale nightlife, while beaches like pretty St Paul’s Bay are also well worth a look.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The kids will be in for a real treat at Villa Mirtenis. As well as the huge pool, there’s room to sunbathe, enjoy a barbecue or just chill out on the upper terrace enjoying the amazing views. And with the beach close by, they will be even happier.

A day out at the water-park in Faliraki will be lots of fun for everyone. This big park is packed with water-slides, rides, pools and the like, and it’s just one of this resort’s family favourites. As well as the beach which seems to go on forever, there’s an aquarium and an Astronomy Café – young stargazers will love the observatory and astronomy-themed garden found in Apollonos.

In Rhodes city, a trip to Elli Beach can be combined with a visit to the nearby Rhodes Aquarium. A fascinating place right by the sea, you can see turtles, octopuses, exotic fish and many more aquatic species as you wander through its atmospheric stone tunnels. The city also delivers great shopping, endless ice cream parlours and cafés, and movie theatres for the latest films. For a little bit of a break, head for Rodini Park – the world’s first landscaped park. Full of peacocks, pine trees and pretty gardens, this green oasis is around 3km from the centre of town.

About 15 minutes’ drive from Rodini Park, the Bee Museum of Rhodes is the place to learn all there is to know about these industrious and important insects – and perhaps pick up a jar of honey or two. Further south, in the village of Archipoli near Kolympia, the Rhodes Toy Museum is another one for curious kids. This charming little museum has a great collection of Greek toys of the past.

Less than 10 minutes from here, you’ll find the enchanting Epta Piges, or Seven Springs, where the waterfalls and woodlands showcase Rhodes’ natural beauty. Elsewhere on the island, there’s the Valley of the Butterflies, another big favourite, and the nearby Farma of Rhodes, where kids can pet and feed animals like llamas, lemurs and camels.

There are many lovely beaches all over the island, like Anthony Quinn Bay, south of Faliraki, peaceful and family-friendly Agathi, and the stunning Tsampika – one of the most beautiful and warmest beaches on Rhodes. Many beaches offer the chance to try activities like snorkelling and scuba-diving, and the island is just as good for dry land activities like tennis, 5-a-side football and horse-riding. The kids might also enjoy a visit to Kartodrome, Faliraki’s exciting go-karting track.
