Experience the charm of the Greek islands in Rhodes. Although it’s one of the largest, it’s still easily navigable – you should be able to reach most places within an hour.

The impressive, medieval Old Town in Rhodes city is one of the highlights. The Palace of the Grand Masters is the main attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage site, which remains a lively place to this day. While the jumble of around 200 streets can be confusing, there’s a lot to discover. If you fancy uncovering some local history, visit The Museum of Modern Greek Art, or the Archaeological Museum which can be found in the Palace of the Grand Masters complex.

Rhodes city is the centre of the island’s nightlife, and boasts plenty of bars and restaurants, many serving Greek cuisine and seafood. There’s a massive casino which stays open late into the night/ early morning, as well as multiplex cinemas and the impressive National Theatre. For clubbing and lively bars, look out for Orfanidou Street and Miltiadou Street. Further down the coast, Lindos also has some notable nightspots, like the outdoor Amphitheatre Club and the suitably chilled Ice Bar.

Landmarks like the Rhodes Acropolis and the Fort of St Nicholas are worth looking out for around the capital, while the city’s Rodini Park is said the be the world’s oldest landscaped park. There is also a good aquarium, found at the island’s northernmost point, next to the large Elli Beach.

Down the eastern coast from Rhodes town, Faliraki offers good family attractions, with water-parks, a go-karting track and a large, busy beach which is one of the hottest on the island. The idyllic Anthony Quinn Bay, a pretty beach with crystal clear waters, is popular for snorkelling, and located south of the town. For wind-surfing, kite-surfing and the like, southern Prasonisi is the beach of choice, its exposed position offering just the right conditions.
Somewhere in between, the Lindos Acropolis is the stand-out sight of this charming coastal village. Standing high on a hill facing the ocean, it’s a bit of a climb to reach it but the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile. Lindos village is also home to some excellent restaurants with rooftop terraces, and some pretty beaches – the charming St Paul’s Bay is the pick of the bunch.

Elsewhere, you will find stunning areas of nature that are ideal for walking and cycling. If you’re looking for a bankable attraction, you can’t go wrong with the Valley of the Butterflies, especially in summer when this beautiful nature reserve fills with colourful butterflies. The waterfalls of the Epta Piges (Seven Springs) are another of Rhodes’ box office hits – this magical site’s waterfalls are wonderfully photogenic and sit amongst lovely areas of woodland. You can even swim in the lake if you fancy a dip.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The whole family will find what they’re looking for at Kolympia Petra. This gorgeous villa offers plenty of room for the kids to play outside, along with an amazing outdoor pool. Add in a barbecue, satellite TV, Wi-Fi and idyllic beaches just a few minutes away, and you’re good to go.

Just 5 minutes from Kolympia, the enchanting Epta Piges, or Seven Springs, make a great first stop. Areas of woods, a lake and the seven incredible waterfalls make this a lovely place for a family visit. For wildlife adventures, try the Farma of Rhodes, where kids can pet and feed animals like llamas, lemurs and camels. Not far away, the Valley of the Butterflies is one of the island’s big attractions – a 600-acre nature reserve that’s perfect for picnics and walks in the forest. There is also a restaurant and natural history museum.

The impressive water-parks of Faliraki are the place to go if they want a day that’s wet and wild. This east coast resort isn’t just about nightlife – there is a lot for families too, with an aquarium and a popular go-karting track amongst the favourites. The beach seems to go on for miles, and has good facilities. Nearby in Apollonos, look out for the Astronomy Café – young stargazers will love its observatory and astronomy-themed garden.

In Rhodes town, you can go on a shopping spree at its wide range of stores, or head for the multiplex cinemas to check out a movie. A day at Elli Beach is always a possibility – it’s located by the Rhodes Aquarium where you can see turtles, octopuses, exotic fish and many more aquatic species.

If you need a break from the crowds on the Old Town streets, Rodini Park makes the perfect spot. It’s said to be the oldest landscaped park in the world. About 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Rhodes, The Bee Museum of Rhodes is the place to learn all there is to know about these industrious and important insects. The solar-powered Toy Museum is little more than 10 minutes’ drive from Kolympia, in the village of Archipoli, and showcases Greek toys from down the decades – it’s a charming museum with a setting to match.

The east coast provides many lovely beaches, like pretty Anthony Quinn Bay, south of Faliraki, or peaceful Agathi, a small, sandy beach which is family-friendly. Tsampika is one of the most beautiful, and warmest, beaches on the island and has water-sports, canoes and beach volleyball. Not their kind of game? No problem. The island is a great place to try all kinds of sports, with facilities for everything from tennis and horse-riding to snorkelling and scuba-diving.
