In Kalathos village on the eastern coast of Rhodes, the two-bedroom Kalathos Galazio is ideal if you’re looking for a property with a smaller capacity. Accommodating up to four guests, this attractive villa boasts an impressive amount of outdoor space, and is just a short walk from the beach.

This villa is around ten minutes’ drive from Lindos, where you will find the Lindos Acropolis, several beaches and some great bars and restaurants. Kalathos itself adds some useful local amenities too. Kalathos Beach is only around 400m from the villa, and the popular Vlycha Beach is just a little further.

Kalathos Galazio features a spacious pool on the outdoor terrace, which also incorporates four sun loungers with parasol and a large barbecue. Dining and seating areas on the paved space just outside the house provide a great place to enjoy a meal or a drink together in the evenings.

You will find a double bedroom and a twin bedroom at Kalathos Galazio, both of which allow you to exit directly to the outside area. Each of the bedrooms is complemented by an attractive bathroom with shower, and has air-conditioning for your comfort.

Also accessible from the terrace, the light lounge area is equipped with sofa seating and a flatscreen TV with satellite channels. Your kitchen has an oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker and a dining table and chairs. The whole house also benefits from free Wi-Fi.

In Kalathos, you will find amenities including a supermarket, pharmacy, bars and restaurants, and the lengthy village beach is generally clean and fairly quiet. Just down the coast, there is a pebble beach at Vlycha, which is good for sunbathing and water-sports, and more beaches in Lindos – St Paul’s Bay is a particularly pleasant one.

As well as the Lindos Acropolis, which also incorporates a 14th-century castle, Lindos has some great restaurants and bars, several with rooftop terraces that enjoy views of the Acropolis. Around fifty minutes’ drive up the coast, the city of Rhodes’ well-preserved medieval Old Town offers even more of historical interest, including the imposing Palace of the Grand Masters.

As one of the largest Greek islands, Rhodes has plenty to discover. From the medieval capital in the north to the spectacularly situated Prasonisi Beach in the south, you’ll find exquisite countryside and fascinating history, as well as a great place to enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

The capital city of Rhodes, on the north-eastern tip of the island, is known for its architecturally impressive Old Town, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The Palace of the Grand Masters, a former fortress and citadel that forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is partly open to the public and is perhaps the city’s best-known attraction. As well as learning about its eventful past, you may catch one of the live events or performances that are regularly staged at the palace.

A labyrinth of streets, some of them nameless, make Rhodes an interesting place to get lost in. You may be able to spot all sorts of architectural influences. It’s very much a city of today, however, with a vibrant commercial centre and plenty of nightlife and entertainment. Attractions include the Archaeological Museum, The Museum of Modern Greek Art. Evangelismós Cathedral and the Marine Aquarium.

Down the coast from Rhodes, the resort of Faliraki offers good family fun, with a well-organised beach, water-parks and a go-karting track among other things. Other good choices for family days out include The Bee Museum of Rhodes (the only one in Greece), and the solar-powered Toy Museum near the village of Archipoli, which showcases Greek toys from down the decades – this cute museum is free to visit.

Notable sights around the island include the Lindos Acropolis, the ancient ruins of which are situated on the clifftop at Lindos and offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The Valley of the Butterflies, situated west of Faliraki, is another very special one – a charming area of natural beauty which fills with butterflies in summer. If you like that, you may also like the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), a calming area of countryside with magnificent waterfalls and a lake.

Rhodes town and Lindos are good choices for clubs, bars and restaurants. Lindos is known for its many rooftop terraces that enjoy great views of the Lindos Acropolis, while Rhodes’ Orfanidou Street is lined with nightspots which may or may not be quite so chilled out.

It’s the beaches that many people visit Rhodes for, and the sheer number of them means there is always a new one to try. There are plenty on the east coast, with several around Lindos, Afantou, Archangelos and Agathi, one of the quieter beaches on the island. The stunning Prasonisi attracts many surfers and kite-surfers and occupies the spot right at the southern tip of Rhodes – it’s definitely worth the trip.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

You have the ideal family villa at Kalathos Galazio. The kids are sure to love the cool pool terrace and the relaxing surroundings, just a stroll away from Kalathos Beach. The house is well equipped with things to keep them entertained, with satellite TV and Wi-Fi. A barbecue in the sun is something you can all enjoy together.

Rhodes is the perfect place for active kids, offering all sorts of outdoor sports and activities. They can try tennis, mini-golf, 5-a-side football, snorkelling, scuba-diving… and what a place it is to try them. The island is full of beautiful areas of countryside, so walking and cycling are also great ways to explore while exercising.

Don’t miss Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs, for a magical change of scene. Swim in the lake, venture into the woods and be sure to take your camera to capture the beautiful waterfalls in all their glory. Another must-see is the Valley of the Butterflies. This stunning nature reserve is perfect for a family day out, and features a Natural History Museum and restaurant. Located close to the valley, the Farma of Rhodes offers an interactive wildlife experience. Kids can pet, feed and get close to the animals, which include kangaroos, ponies and even ostriches.

Wildlife lovers will also enjoy the Marine Aquarium in Rhodes town. Occupying the island’s northernmost spot, this aquarium is full of aquatic creatures and organisms. Similarly educational and lots of fun, the Astronomy Café is bringing astrotourism to Apollonos, just south of Faliraki. With an astronomy-themed garden and café, as well as an observatory, it’s one of the more unusual attractions on the island.

There are many pleasant beaches around the island which are a good choice for families. The likes of Kolymbia and Agathi are a bit quieter than places like Faliraki, while Lindos and Vlycha are also suitable for kids. Anthony Quinn Bay is another very pretty beach which is good for snorkelling, although it can get busy.

Faliraki also has some great water-parks, with all sorts of wet and wild slides and rides, and the beach goes on for miles. Another good choice for a day out together, Kartodrome is a go-karting track in the town that provides a fun driving experience.

The city of Rhodes has enough to keep everyone entertained for days, with the bustling Old Town and lively commercial centre providing cafés, restaurants and lots of familiar shops. There are also a couple of multiplex cinemas in the city. For a relaxing break, there’s the peaceful Rodini Park, said to be the first landscaped park in the world.
